Chapter 80 - Chapter Eighty: The Chamber Below

Nobody moved.

The staircase beneath the Memory Tree disappeared into darkness.

Only the ancient symbols along the walls provided any light, glowing faintly in the same golden hue Ariana had seen when the ground first cracked beneath her feet.

She couldn't look away.

That symbol belonged to her.

Or, at least, it responded to her.

Lena stepped closer.

"Ariana..."

"I know."

The vibration beneath their feet grew stronger.

Dust fell from the surrounding structures.

Several citizens began retreating toward the outer streets.

Elias remained where he stood.

His face had lost all color.

Adrian looked at the staircase, then at Elias.

"You said it was sealed."

"It was."

"Then explain this."

"I can't."

Adrian's expression hardened.

"You've guarded this place for centuries."

"I've guarded the sanctuary."

Elias looked toward the opening.

"Not what lies beneath it."

Ariana descended the first step.

Lena immediately followed.

"Ariana, wait."

She turned.

"I'm not going alone."

Lena sighed.

"I know."

Adrian stepped forward.

"I'm coming too."

Ariana's eyes narrowed.

"Why?"

"Because I know what that chamber is."

Elias looked at him sharply.

"You don't."

Adrian ignored him.

"I know what they intended it to become."

Ariana studied his face.

He wasn't lying.

At least not completely.

"Then you're coming."

Elias stepped forward.

"No."

Ariana stopped.

The old man's voice was firm.

"You cannot open that chamber."

"Why?"

"Because the people who built it were not trying to preserve humanity."

He looked at the glowing symbols.

"They were trying to change it."

The words stopped everyone.

Lena frowned.

"Change humanity how?"

Elias didn't answer.

Ariana stepped closer.

"You said the sanctuary preserved people."

"It did."

"And the chamber below?"

His expression tightened.

"It preserved an experiment."

Ariana's stomach dropped.

"What experiment?"

Elias looked directly into her eyes.

"Evolution."

The word echoed through the staircase.

Ariana stared at him.

"You mean genetic modification?"

"No."

Elias shook his head.

"Something much older."

The symbols along the walls suddenly brightened.

Ariana felt warmth spread through her chest.

The same sensation.

The same awakening.

She placed one hand against the wall.

The entire staircase illuminated.

Gasps erupted behind her.

A door appeared at the bottom.

It had not been there before.

Ariana slowly descended.

The door opened as she approached.

Beyond it was a circular chamber.

Unlike the sanctuary above, this place was dark.

No gardens.

No water.

No beautiful architecture.

Only rows of enormous glass chambers.

Most were empty.

Some were broken.

But one remained intact.

Ariana stopped breathing.

Inside the chamber was a person.

A young woman.

Dark hair.

Pale skin.

Her face was strangely familiar.

Too familiar.

Lena stepped beside Ariana.

"Oh my God."

The woman inside the chamber suddenly opened her eyes.

Ariana stumbled backward.

The woman looked directly at her.

Not at Lena.

Not at Adrian.

At Ariana.

Then the glass chamber began filling with light.

A voice emerged from the surrounding speakers.

"Genetic match confirmed."

Ariana's heart pounded.

The voice continued.

"Bloodline continuity: ninety-nine point eight percent."

Lena stared at Ariana.

"Bloodline?"

Ariana couldn't speak.

The woman inside the chamber slowly raised her hand.

Her palm touched the glass.

Ariana instinctively raised hers.

Their hands aligned on opposite sides.

The chamber responded.

Every light in the room exploded to life.

A massive archive appeared above them.

Images.

Names.

Generations.

Ariana watched as a family tree unfolded through centuries.

One name appeared at the center.

Then another.

Then another.

Until the final name appeared.

ARIANA.

She stared at it.

"No..."

Adrian stepped closer.

His face had gone pale.

"The last Heir."

Elias stood frozen at the entrance.

He whispered something Ariana barely heard.

"The bloodline survived."

Ariana turned toward him.

"What bloodline?"

Elias looked at the woman inside the chamber.

"The original line."

Ariana's heart hammered.

"The original what?"

"The first people who carried the power."

Silence.

Lena looked between them.

"What power?"

The woman inside the chamber suddenly spoke.

Her voice was weak.

But unmistakably human.

"Ariana."

Ariana froze.

The woman smiled.

"I've been waiting for you."

Ariana stared at her.

"Who are you?"

The woman closed her eyes briefly.

Then opened them again.

"I'm your mother."

Everything inside Ariana stopped.

The chamber went silent.

No one moved.

No one breathed.

Ariana's entire world seemed to collapse into a single sentence.

Her mother.

The woman she had believed was gone.

The woman whose absence had shaped every unanswered question in her life.

The woman standing behind glass.

Alive.

Ariana stepped closer.

"That's impossible."

The woman smiled sadly.

"I know."

Then the chamber began to shake.

Warning symbols appeared across the walls.

The woman's expression changed.

"There's no time."

Ariana's voice trembled.

"For what?"

Her mother looked toward the ceiling.

"They found us."

A distant alarm sounded throughout the sanctuary.

Adrian immediately reached for his weapon.

Lena turned toward the entrance.

"What is happening?"

Elias looked terrified.

"The Continuum isn't alone."

Ariana looked back at the woman inside the chamber.

Her mother pressed one hand against the glass.

"They're coming for you."

The lights suddenly went out.

And somewhere far above them, the sanctuary doors began to open.

The darkness lasted only seconds.

Then emergency lights flickered on.

Ariana turned toward the entrance.

Heavy footsteps echoed through the sanctuary.

Not one person.

Dozens.

Adrian's expression hardened.

"They're already inside."

Lena grabbed Ariana's arm.

"We need to move."

Ariana didn't.

Her eyes remained fixed on the woman inside the chamber.

"My mother."

The woman nodded weakly.

"Yes."

"Why did you leave me?"

Pain crossed her mother's face.

"I didn't."

The answer shattered Ariana.

Before she could ask another question, a violent impact shook the chamber.

The doors above them slammed open.

Voices echoed through the sanctuary.

Elias looked toward the staircase.

"They've breached the upper level."

Adrian pulled his weapon.

"Then we have minutes."

Ariana turned toward the glass chamber.

"How do I get you out?"

Her mother looked at the control panel beside the chamber.

"You can't."

Ariana froze.

"Why?"

"Because I'm not the one they're coming for."

The woman looked directly into her eyes.

"They're coming for you."

Another impact shook the chamber.

The glass surrounding Ariana's mother began glowing.

Ariana stepped forward.

"No. I'm not leaving you here."

Her mother smiled.

"Then you'll have to remember who you are."

The chamber doors suddenly sealed.

Ariana's mother placed her palm against the glass one final time.

"Run, Ariana."

The footsteps grew louder.

And this time, they were coming down the stairs.
