The eye beneath the sanctuary stared at me.
Not at Lena.
Not at Rowan.
Not at the First Hunger.
Not even at the golden-eyed girl.
Only me.
My reflection moved inside it.
But I didn't.
It smiled.
I didn't.
My blood ran cold.
"What are you?"
The reflection tilted its head.
Then it answered with my voice.
"I am what you were before you became someone."
I took a step backward.
"No."
The little girl inside my mind whispered again.
"They were afraid you'd remember."
The reflection smiled wider.
"They weren't afraid of your power."
The ground shook.
"They were afraid of your memory."
The Memory Tree trembled above us.
Silver leaves began falling.
Every leaf carried a face.
A child.
A mother.
A soldier.
A stranger.
A forgotten civilization.
Then the leaves touched the ground.
And every person whose face appeared on them screamed.
The sanctuary filled with voices.
Lena covered her ears.
Rowan dropped to one knee.
The golden-eyed girl cried out.
Even the First Hunger staggered backward.
I remained standing.
Because the voices weren't entering my ears.
They were entering me.
I saw cities.
Not the ancient city beneath Sanctuary Twelve.
Older ones.
Cities built before the First Civilization.
People walking beneath skies that had different colors.
Children playing beside enormous silver trees.
Humans standing before the Source.
But they weren't worshipping it.
They weren't afraid of it.
They were speaking to it.
Living beside it.
Choosing beside it.
Then I saw something that made my heart stop.
A woman stood before thousands of people.
She had my face.
But she wasn't Aurelia.
She wasn't Ariana.
She was something else.
Something older.
The woman raised her hand.
The Source appeared behind her.
Four lights separated from it.
Silver.
Gold.
Red.
White.
Memory.
Possibility.
Consequence.
Choice.
But there was something else.
A fifth light remained inside the Source.
Black.
Not darkness.
Not evil.
Absence.
The woman looked at it.
And whispered...
"You cannot remain."
The black light moved.
It entered her.
She screamed.
The memory shattered.
I gasped.
The sanctuary returned.
The giant eye was still beneath us.
The shadow was gone.
The First Hunger stared at me.
"What did you see?"
I looked at him.
"I don't know."
He shook his head.
"No."
His voice was different.
Afraid.
"You do."
The golden-eyed girl approached me.
Her golden eyes were brighter than before.
"You saw the beginning."
"No."
I looked at the eye beneath the sanctuary.
"I saw something before the beginning."
The First Hunger went completely still.
Rowan slowly stood.
"What does that mean?"
"I don't know."
The silver eye blinked.
Once.
The entire sanctuary went dark.
Then a voice spoke.
Not from beneath us.
From everywhere.
Aurelia.
Lena grabbed my hand.
"I remember you."
I looked at her.
Her fingers were trembling.
"So do I."
Rowan stepped closer.
"Ariana…"
"Yes?"
He stared at me for several seconds.
"I remember our mother."
My chest tightened.
"You do?"
He nodded.
"She used to sing when we were children."
I swallowed.
"I don't remember that."
His expression changed.
"Why don't you?"
Before I could answer, the little girl spoke inside my mind.
Because that memory doesn't belong to Ariana.
I froze.
"What?"
Lena looked at me.
"What happened?"
I didn't answer.
The little girl continued.
It belongs to the one before her.
I looked toward the Memory Tree.
One branch had turned completely black.
A single silver leaf remained attached to it.
I walked toward it.
The closer I came, the colder the sanctuary became.
I reached for the leaf.
The moment my fingers touched it...
I disappeared.
Again.
I stood inside a white room.
No walls.
No ceiling.
No floor.
Only endless white.
Someone stood ahead of me.
A woman.
My face.
My eyes.
My body.
But older.
Much older.
She looked at me with tears in her eyes.
"I am sorry."
I stared at her.
"For what?"
"For making you."
My heart stopped.
"You made me?"
She nodded.
"But not the way you think."
"What am I?"
She looked behind me.
The four circles appeared.
Memory.
Possibility.
Consequence.
Choice.
Then the fifth appeared.
Black.
The woman closed her eyes.
"You were never one of them."
My voice trembled.
"Then what am I?"
She opened her eyes.
"You were what they were built around."
The fifth circle moved toward me.
I stepped backward.
"No."
"You have already accepted it."
"I don't want it."
"That doesn't matter."
The room cracked.
The woman reached for me.
"They erased you because you refused to become what they wanted."
"Who erased me?"
She smiled sadly.
"All of them."
The Architects appeared behind her.
The First Civilization.
The Council.
The first Heir.
The first Architect.
Even the Source.
Every one of them.
All standing together.
All looking at me.
And for the first time, I understood.
They weren't fighting each other.
They had been fighting me.
Not Ariana.
Not Aurelia.
Me.
The woman whispered...
"You were the first choice."
The world went silent.
I stared at her.
"But the fifth circle said I wasn't."
Her expression changed.
"It lied."
The white room shattered.
I fell.
Not through darkness.
Through memories.
I saw myself as a child.
Then as Aurelia.
Then as someone older.
Then younger.
Again.
Again.
Again.
Hundreds of lives.
Thousands.
Each time I chose something.
Each time the world changed.
Each time they erased me.
Until finally...
I saw the first time.
There was no civilization.
No Architects.
No Source.
No Memory Tree.
Nothing.
Only me.
A child standing in endless darkness.
And something standing opposite me.
It had no face.
No body.
Only a voice.
Choose.
I looked at it.
"What?"
Choose what exists.
I was a child.
I didn't understand.
So I pointed.
At myself.
The moment my finger moved...
the Source appeared.
The first light.
Then the world.
Then memory.
Possibility.
Consequence.
Choice.
Everything.
Everything began because I chose.
I screamed.
"No!"
The memory broke.
I woke on the sanctuary floor.
Lena was beside me.
"Ariana!"
I tried to breathe.
Rowan was kneeling on my other side.
"What happened?"
I stared at them.
My hands were shaking.
"I remember."
The First Hunger approached slowly.
"What?"
I looked into his red eyes.
"You weren't created by the Source."
He froze.
"You were created by me."
Silence.
The golden-eyed girl stepped forward.
"And me?"
I looked at her.
"You too."
Her eyes widened.
"The Source?"
I shook my head.
"The Source didn't create us."
I looked down at the giant silver eye.
"It came after."
The sanctuary trembled.
The Memory Tree began to collapse.
The First Hunger looked at me.
"Then what are you?"
I opened my mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because the answer was already standing behind me.
The little girl.
She stepped out of my shadow.
For the first time, everyone could see her.
Lena screamed.
Rowan raised his blue energy.
The golden-eyed girl stared.
The First Hunger whispered...
"The first child."
The little girl smiled.
Then she looked directly at me.
"No."
She turned toward the silver eye.
"I am the memory of the first choice."
The eye beneath the sanctuary closed.
And the entire buried world began to rise.
Not collapse.
Rise.
The ground lifted.
Ancient buildings emerged from beneath the sanctuary.
Roads.
Towers.
Homes.
Temples.
A city older than the First Civilization appeared around us.
And at the center stood a throne.
Empty.
Waiting.
The little girl walked toward it.
I followed.
"What happens now?"
She stopped.
Then turned.
"You sit."
I stared at the throne.
"Why?"
She smiled.
"Because the one who created the first choice has finally remembered what she was created to do."
The throne began glowing silver.
And somewhere beyond the rising city, billions of voices whispered one word.
Aurelia.
