Chapter 18 - CHAPTER 18 – Secret Promise

The violet light in Kai's eyes didn't just glow; it hummed with a frequency that made the very air in the student gardens vibrate. The dark, oily mana seeping from his skin wasn't frost or fire—it was a void, a hungry, parasitic energy that began to dissolve the bioluminescent petals of the weeping willow before they even hit the ground.

"Kai! Stop!" Elena's voice was a desperate whip of sound.

She didn't back away this time. Instead, she lunged forward, her S-rank core screaming as she unleashed a wave of absolute-zero mana. She wasn't trying to attack him; she was trying to contain him. She wrapped her arms around his shaking frame, her frost acting as a physical and spiritual cage.

"Focused... Breathing..." Kai gasped, his voice sounding like two stones grinding together. Inside his mind, the golden screen was a war zone.

"Rowan, listen to my voice!" Elena's silver hair was now white with rime, her forehead pressed against his. The cold she was radiating was enough to freeze a B-rank monster solid, but Kai's body was a furnace of conflicting energies. "The link! Re-establish the resonance! Use my core as an anchor!"

Kai reached out blindly, his fingers digging into Elena's cloak. He didn't see the garden anymore. He saw a kaleidoscope of fractured memories—a violet-eyed man flipping a coin, a laboratory filled with jars of glowing souls, and the terrifyingly vast abyss of his own 'Growth Potential.'

I am not... a meal, Kai thought, the sarcasm returning to his mind like a life-raft. I am... artisanal trash!

With a roar of mental defiance, Kai triggered the Copy Mechanic. He didn't copy a move; he copied Elena's will. He mimicked the unyielding, frozen discipline of the Ice Empress.

The violet light in his eyes flickered, turned blue, and then snapped back to his natural brown. The dark mana retracted into his skin with a sound like a dying hiss.

Kai slumped into Elena's arms, his breath coming in ragged, steaming gasps. The violet-eyed man's presence in his mind retreated, leaving behind a cold, lingering sense of being watched.

"Is... is it gone?" Elena whispered. Her voice was shaking, and for the first time, Kai felt her trembling. She was terrified.

"It's... in the basement," Kai wheezed, rubbing his throbbing temples. "The 'Mirror of Souls.' It's a parasitic talent logic. The Snake... they didn't just want to watch me. They wanted to turn me into a recording device for everyone I 'mimic.'"

Elena pulled back, her hands still resting on his shoulders. The garden around them was a blackened ruin, the violet willow now a skeleton of charcoal.

"You're a D-rank," she said, her eyes searching his. "But that thing... that was something else. Kai, if the Bureau finds out that you're carrying a sentient talent-parasite..."

"They'll kill me," Kai said, his voice flat. He looked at his hands, which were still stained with a faint, receding violet hue. "Or worse. They'll use me as a bait-shop for the Snake."

The silence of the night was heavy. In the distance, the faint sound of Academy security drones began to hum—the mana-spike in the garden had finally tripped the sensors.

"Elena," Kai said, looking her in the eye. "You have every reason to turn me in. I'm a Rank-D anomaly, I'm mimicking your S-rank talent, and I have a secret organization trying to download my brain. I'm a walking disaster."

Elena Frost looked at the scorched grass, then at the boy who had just survived a mental overwrite through sheer, sarcastic spite. She thought about the way the school had written him off as 'trash.' She thought about the weight of her own S-rank crown, and the loneliness of being a 'perfect' goddess.

"No," she said.

Kai blinked. "No? As in 'no, you won't turn me in' or 'no, you're even more of a disaster than you think'?"

"Both," she said, a faint, weary smile touching her lips. She held out her hand, her silver eyes glowing with a quiet, fierce light. "We make a promise. Right here. A secret between the S-rank genius and the F-rank capacitor."

"I like the sound of that," Kai said, his heart skipping a beat. "What are the terms? Do I get a dental plan?"

"Total honesty," Elena said, her voice turning serious. "You tell me when the violet light returns. You tell me when you evolve. You don't hide your growth from me, Kai. If I'm going to be your anchor, I need to know exactly how much weight I'm holding."

Kai looked at her hand, then at her face. He realized that this wasn't just a tactical alliance. It was a lifeline.

"Deal," Kai said. He took her hand, and this time, the mana-link didn't feel like a cold invasion. It felt like a bridge. "I promise. No more secrets between us. Well... except for how I get my hair to look this good without any talent. That's a trade secret."

"Idiot," Elena whispered, but she didn't let go of his hand.

The next morning, Northwood Academy was a different world.

The news of the "Garden Accident" had been suppressed by Headmaster Vance, but the rumors were flying. People saw the scorched willow; they saw the way Elena Frost was walking to her classes with a grim, focused determination.

And they saw Kai Rowan.

Kai walked through the halls with his hands in his pockets, humming a tune. To the world, he was still the "Millennium Man"—the F-rank who had "burned out" his potential to save his skin. The teachers looked at him with pity; the students looked at him with a mixture of scorn and lingering confusion.

"Hey, Rowan!"

Kai stopped. Ryker Thorne was standing there, his arm in a sling and his face covered in healing bandages. He looked like he'd been through a meat grinder, but the Berserker-induced fury was gone, replaced by a sullen, brooding resentment.

"I heard you're being moved to the vocational track next week," Ryker spat, though he kept his distance. "Fixing toasters in a basement. It's where you belong, trash."

"I don't know, Ryker," Kai said, flashing a bright, cheerful grin. "I hear there's a high demand for toaster repair. People love their toast. It's a growth industry."

Ryker growled and stomped away. Kai watched him go, his 9.00 Intelligence already analyzing Ryker's mana-limp. He could have mimicked Ryker's 'Flame Burst' right then and there, but he kept it buried.

He met Elena in the library's "Ancient History" section. They didn't speak; they just sat at the same table, their knees occasionally brushing beneath the mahogany wood. The Empress's Anchor was humming, stabilizing Kai's D-rank core as it worked to process the 'Mirror of Souls' residue.

"How are the stats?" Elena whispered, not looking up from her book on Pre-Awakening Artifacts.

"Steady," Kai replied. He pulled up his internal screen.

"The Intelligence jump is the weirdest part," Kai murmured. "I feel like I can see the math in everything. The way the mana-lights flicker, the way people shift their weight... it's like the world is a giant textbook I've already read."

"That's the 'Adaptive Learner' side of your talent," Elena said. "It's preparing you for something. But Kai, stay focused. Vance hasn't given up. He's—"

Suddenly, the library's speakers crackled to life with a loud, authoritative chime.

"Attention all students," the voice of Headmaster Vance boomed, echoing through the stacks. "In preparation for the mid-term evaluations, the Board of Directors has authorized a sudden Practical Application Assessment."

The library went silent. Students exchanged worried glances. Practical assessments usually meant dungeons, and sudden ones usually meant trouble.

"All first-year students will report to the Main Courtyard in fifteen minutes," Vance continued, his voice carrying a strange, predatory edge. "Due to the recent... anomalies in combat performance, this will be a Rank Stability Exam. You will be tested individually by the Bureau of Talent Integrity's latest automated sensors."

Kai felt his blood turn to ice. Elena's hand went tight on her book.

"A Rank Stability Exam?" Kai whispered. "Elena, those aren't just scanners. Those are 'Core Stressors.' They pump mana into your veins to see if your talent rank is actually stable or if you're faking it with artifacts."

Elena looked at him, her face pale. "If they pump mana into you, your D-rank core will flare. It won't matter what masking I use. Your 'Growth Potential' will react to the stimulus."

Kai stood up, his mind racing. 9.10 Intelligence was trying to find a way out, but the math wasn't looking good. If he went out there, he was exposed. If he didn't, he was a fugitive.

"Rowan," Elena said, her silver hair shimmering. "You have fifteen minutes. We need a plan."

"I have a plan," Kai said, a reckless, sarcastic spark returning to his eyes. "But it's going to be very, very stupid."

"How stupid?"

"Let's just say... I'm about to give the Bureau a reason to believe that 'Growth Potential' is even weirder than they thought."

As they walked toward the courtyard, a final announcement echoed through the school, sealing the cliffhanger.

"Additionally," Vance's voice added, "this exam will be supervised by a special guest from the Capital. Please welcome the National Hero Association's Chief Investigator: The Violet Sage."

Kai stopped dead in his tracks. The name hit him like a physical blow.

Violet Sage.

He looked at Elena, and in the reflection of her eyes, he saw a flickering violet dot. The harvest hadn't just begun. It was coming to the front door.
