Chapter 88 - Chapter 84: The Milestone

The afternoon sunlight slanted golden and warm across the plush white rug of the nursery. Jay sat cross-legged on the floor, stacking a pyramid of wooden blocks for Jayden while Keira babbled happily nearby, chasing a plush stuffed rabbit in clumsy, crawling circles.

For a brief moment, the heavy, suffocating weight of the past few days lifted. The nursery felt bright, alive, and filled with the innocent, unburdened magic of childhood.

Across the room, Keifer's phone buzzed loudly against the mahogany side table.

He was seated at the small velvet armchair by the window, his expression locked in a tight, unyielding mask of corporate focus. He held a phone to his ear, pacing softly back and forth as he argued in low, clipped tones with the head of the international board regarding a delayed security shipment.

"I don't care about the port delays," Keifer said into the phone, his voice sharp and authoritative. "Reroute the logistics through the private docks by midnight. I want confirmation on my desk before dawn."

Jay looked over her shoulder at him. It was the third urgent call in a span of two hours. Even when he was physically in the same room, he was miles away—trapped behind a screen, a phone line, and the endless demands of a legacy that refused to let him breathe. A familiar, sharp ache pinched at her heart, but she forced herself to look away, turning her attention back to the twins.

"Come here, sweet girl," Jay cooed softly, holding her hands out to Keira, who had paused near the center of the room.

Keira wobbled on her hands and knees before suddenly pushing herself up onto her feet. She grabbed onto the edge of a low velvet ottoman for balance, her tiny fingers clutching the fabric tightly. Her big, expressive eyes locked onto Jay, filled with a sudden, determined spark.

Jay's breath caught. Her hands hovered in the air, fear and excitement instantly warring in her chest.

"Keira?" Jay whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "Can you... baby, come to Mama?"

Keira let go of the ottoman.

She took one wobbly, unstable step forward. Then a second. Her arms windmilled wildly for balance as she giggled, a bright, musical sound that filled the entire room.

"Keifer—" Jay started to gasp, turning her head frantically toward the window. "Keifer, look—!"

"Listen to me," Keifer snapped into his phone, turning his back to the room as he paced toward the corner of the nursery, entirely missing the motion. "If the board thinks they can bypass my signature on this, they're sorely mistaken. Execute the protocol."

Jay's words died in her throat. She looked back down just in time as Keira took a final, triumphant lunge forward, tumbling right into Jay's open arms with a delighted squeal.

"You did it!" Jay laughed, tears instantly springing to her eyes as she smothered the little girl's face with kisses. "Oh, my sweet girl, you walked! You took your very first steps!"

It was a monumental moment. A milestone every parent dreams of witnessing, cheering for, and sharing together.

But as Jay held her daughter tightly against her chest, a profound, hollow silence washed over her. She looked up slowly.

Keifer was still standing by the window, his back to them, his voice low and steady as he barked another corporate directive into the phone. He had missed it. The very first steps of his daughter's life had happened mere feet away, drowned out by the noise of a boardroom meeting.

The tears that slipped down Jay's cheeks weren't tears of pure joy anymore. They were laced with a crushing, devastating grief. They were standing in the same room, under the same roof, living the same life—yet they were entirely alone.
