Chapter 1: No One Stays Here

The house was not old.

That was the strange part.

It didn't look broken enough to be abandoned. The walls were still standing straight. The roof had no holes. Yet every window was dark, even in daylight, as if the inside swallowed light.

People in Gray Hollow walked faster when they passed it.

They never looked at the windows.

When Arin moved into the town, she noticed this immediately.

"Why is that house empty?" she asked the grocery shop owner, pointing at the building across the road.

The man didn't answer at first. He slowly lowered his eyes and said, "Because it watches."

Arin laughed, thinking it was a joke.

She rented the house the same evening.

That night, while unpacking, she felt something strange.

The silence was too perfect.

No insects. No wind. No distant dogs barking.

Just her breathing.

And then—

A sound.

Not loud.

Not sudden.

A soft shift.

Like someone changing position behind her.

Arin turned around.

The room was empty.

But the feeling remained.

She was no longer alone.
