Chapter 49 - Shock Doctrine (1.5)

Later that same day, in the afternoon.

Under the shadow of the 'Blackstone' castle on the top of the hill in the middle of the fortress city name 'Vertenville', Marquis Scrofa le Massif, an ugly old man whose body are that's of the opulently fatties like a pig dresses in fancy clothes, is standing like a boulder of flesh and fat, staring out from his wide panel window of his council room in which it's long rectangle table in the middle of the room are seated full of retainer knights and city officials.

The scenery beyond the window are that's of a city that's currently being surrounded and besieged by a massive army of more than six thousand men that's came out of nowhere like a torrent of pale white snow, raising a banner of... strangely enough, a white Dove, which was a family crest of a lowly Baron from rural Nordenland, title not befitting such forces at all.

"Did we lit the beacon yet?" Marquis Scrofa asks his subordinate in an authoritative tone, his eyes glued to the scenery of his besieged city that's currently baths under the midday sun with cautious gazes.

"I have ordered them to be lit, my lord." One of his retainer answered with respect.

His gazes then shift to one of the stone tower that's dotted the city, as the bonfire atop of it is being lit and are now blazing bright, sending a towering fumes smoke into the skies above as the signal for other nobles under him and maybe even his mentor, Prince Gardner, to send him a reinforcement to break out of this unjust casus belli-less attack.

"Great, what about the supplies of our inner city?" Marquis asked.

"We have enough food to last a few months, Unless we confiscated all the food from them commoner and extended the time." One of the city official said.

"Then you have my permission to do so! Except that bakery over there, my daughter love it's sweet berry pie" Marquis commands, as he pointed his finger toward the bakery down below.

"Affirmative, my lord." The city official answered and bow down his head in respect.

"And also, have someone guard my daughter's room immediately!" He shouted with such an authoritative tone that's everyone bow down before his commands.

As he saw that's everyone is listening to him, he nodded and smiles, not grins of the viper nor smug like that of the beast, he just smile in content like a normal mortal man.

But, in that moment of content.

*BOOM!!! BOOM!!!! BOOM!!!!!*

A loud and roaring, salvo of sounds, like that's of a hundred lighting bolt has shook the earth itself and sending it's thunderous aftershock echoing the lands. Sending everyone in the room to take cover in panic.

"What in the...?!?!" Marquis exclaimed in panic, his hand unconsciously reached for the small pendant he wore and clench it tightly as his eyes gazes out of the window once more to find that's some part of his city's wall were already collapsing under the sustained continuous barrage of magical fiery arrows.

-----

Meanwhile outside of city's wall, around approximately a thousand meter away from the crumbling wall, at the edge of the forest that's lies just beyond the open zone of small farms and villages that's surrounded the wall.

The sound of field guns thunderous salvo subsided, leaving only uncanny silence as a thin veil of smoke files across the crumbled rubbles of a wall.

"I didn't expect it to be that effective..."

I, Baron Victor of Vindia, mumbles as the scene ahead came into views from my eyes that's currently sticking tightly to the binoculars on the tripod that were placed in front of me.

"Well, seem like it takes just thirteen salvos of forty HE shell included the ranging shots to destroy the weakest part of them wall, thanks the divine that's Lady Valeria have a rat inside to give us that's information." John in his full on knightly armor, my military advisor, who's currently standing beside me speaks with an enthusiastic voices.

"It did collapsed too fast, Elena and Arina's force didn't reach here yet, we didn't have enough troops to storms the city." I explained to him with a concern looks.

In order to marches my army as fast as physically possible, I spilt my 'Grand Army' into three main armies between myself, Elena and Arina to independently move, and converge together only if I commands them to in an special occasion, such as, storming the city.

"But isn't that our 'Stormtrooper' in their position already?" John asked.

"Their number aren't enough to assault alone, too risky. The enemy might have start to form a defensive parameter behind the wall already." I answered.

"With due respect sire, that's exactly what you trained them to do, if you concerns about their safety, I suggests soften enemy up before the assault with howitzers, using ranges calculated from the field gun's company." John advises me.

"But the Civilian may took some...

As I mention civilian, John frowns his brows.

"It's us versus them now sir... and I suggested that's It should be us to survives, rather than them." John speaks with a heavy voices dragged with heavy responsibility.

I heard him... and so I relented....

It's simply the nature of 'War'.

Then the continuous barrages of hundred of howitzers' shells flies across the crumbled wall like a blazing meteor shower and landed in the city behind them, leaving behind only death and destruction in their wakes.
