La La Land officially started shooting.

The director sent the final script to Cassius's work email.

Cassius printed it out and loaded it into the Best Actor space.

It was time.

[New script detected: La La Land]

[Main role: Sebastian]

[Role traits: down-and-out jazz pianist, idealist, stubborn traditionalist, romantic who hides his vulnerability behind arrogance]

[Suggested build direction: concert-pianist-level technique, jazz improvisation instinct, old-school Hollywood dating skills, precise micro-expression control when facing compromise]

[Role Deep Sweep function available]

[Would you like to view currently sweepable related instances?]

Cassius tapped yes.

The light screen shifted and listed several pale-blue boxes.

The first one read:

[Instance: Whiplash]

[Linked traits: obsessive pursuit of perfection, twisted teacher-student power dynamics, near-pathological commitment to artistic standards]

[Sweep estimated core output: Artistic Paranoid background fragments, Growth Through Humiliation skill fragments, heavy jazz-fanatic mindset]

[First sweep cost: $800,000]

[Note: Fletcher, that old bastard's sadistic teaching methods might give you nightmares, but they work.]

Cassius smiled at the last line and kept scrolling.

Next:

[Instance: The Legend of 1900]

[Linked traits: pure isolation from the world, experiencing life only through music, ultimate lifelong solitude]

[Sweep estimated core output: Pure Artist background fragments, Piano Universe View skill fragments, heavy 1900-style emotional expression]

[First sweep cost: $1.5 million]

[Note: After this sweep you might not want to get out of bed for a few days. Don't ask why. It's 1900 taking over.]

Then the big one:

[Instance: La La Land – Sebastian Route]

[Linked traits: persistence while broke, awkward romance, compromises after success, the thousand unspoken words in that final smile]

[Sweep estimated core output: Jazz Soul background fragments, Old-School Dating Skills fragments, heavy Sebastian-style emotional layers, precise control over the final eye-contact scene]

[First sweep cost: $2 million]

[Note: This instance lets you live Sebastian's entire life. From the lonely dusk performance of City of Stars to the quiet smile while watching Mia with another man. Have tissues ready.]

Cassius scrolled past a few more—The Pianist, Green Book, Bohemian Rhapsody—then stopped on the Sebastian route.

He decided to run the full original script first.

His finger hovered over the La La Land box, then drifted upward to Whiplash and The Legend of 1900.

He hesitated for a moment.

Then he tapped all three.

[Instances selected: Whiplash, The Legend of 1900, La La Land – Sebastian Route]

[Total sweep cost: $4.3 million]

[Confirm sweep?]

Cassius stared at the number.

Four point three million dollars. Enough for a small apartment in Beverly Hills.

He took a deep breath and confirmed.

The panel flashed. The money was deducted.

A gentle warmth spread through his consciousness.

No full scenes. No voices. No heartbreak.

Just attribute orbs flowing into him like a quiet tide.

From Whiplash came artistic obsession, growth through humiliation, and the frantic mindset of a jazz fanatic.

From The Legend of 1900 came pure artistry, a universe lived through piano keys, and 1900-style emotional expression.

From the Sebastian route came the biggest wave: jazz soul, old-school dating skills, layered Sebastian emotions, and razor-sharp control over that final silent stare.

Cassius closed his eyes.

He felt Sebastian's loneliness at dusk in an empty bar, fingers on the out-of-tune piano.

He felt the clumsy way Sebastian tried to ask Mia out while rambling about jazz.

He felt the quiet smile at the end—watching Mia with another man—holding a lifetime of words behind it.

"I made it."

"You did too."

"What if we hadn't let go?"

"Doesn't matter now."

"Be happy."

"You too."

Cassius opened his eyes. His face was wet.

He touched his cheek. Tears.

He looked at his hands. They looked the same, but the flexibility and coordination felt like someone who had practiced for over a decade.

He stood up and walked to the dusty upright piano in the corner of the living room.

He sat down, lifted the lid, and let his fingers rest on the keys.

He played City of Stars.

The version Sebastian played in the film.

It flowed without hesitation, without the old wrong notes. For the first time, Cassius and Sebastian moved as one.

First day of shooting. 4 a.m.

Cassius arrived while it was still dark, but the entrance to the 105 Freeway was already jammed with production trucks.

Makeup trailers, wardrobe trucks, catering, and three camera cranes blocked the on-ramp completely.

The line producer ran around yelling into his walkie, loud enough to wake the dead.

Cassius had barely stepped out of his car when Damien Chazelle rushed over, eyes bloodshot, hair sticking up like he'd been electrocuted, clutching a stack of papers.

"Cassius."

"What's wrong?"

Chazelle pulled him aside and lowered his voice. "The opening scene might have to change."

"Change what?"

"The road closure permit got denied."

Chazelle shoved the papers into his hands. "LA traffic control said the window we asked for was too short, it would mess up morning rush hour, and—well, they just said no."

Cassius flipped through the stack. Multiple stamps. The last one in bright red: DENIED.

"What was the original plan?"

Chazelle pointed into the distance. "Over there."

Cassius followed his finger to the massive interchange where the 105 and 110 freeways crossed—a four-level beast with traffic flowing in every direction like blood vessels.

The pillars were over a hundred feet tall.

"We were going to shoot the opening right there," Chazelle said, looking miserable. "Highway gridlock. Everyone gets out of their cars and dances. One continuous six-minute shot. We had the road closed for two days. Now—"
