He looked calm. Terrifyingly calm.
He walked straight to where Anaïs was waiting by the taxi stand.
She saw his face. She saw the blood on his knuckles where he had gripped the chair too hard.
She didn't ask What happened?
She asked, How bad?
He was inside, Bastian said, his voice like grinding stones. He swapped the vials. He took off his mask and smiled at me while he did it.
Anaïs felt the ground sway beneath her. The cameras?
He wouldn't have done it if the cameras were on, Bastian said. Victoria owns the hospital board. The footage will be corrupted by morning.
Anaïs closed her eyes. She took a deep breath, inhaling the cold city air.
