Chapter 13 - Almost Seen

The Queen believed in patience.

She believed that if you tightened a rope slowly enough, the person hanging wouldn't even realize they were suffocating.

Zhen Luo knelt in the study chamber, posture perfect, expression calm. Across from him, the Queen sipped her tea, watching him like a hawk watches prey.

"You've been quiet," she said lightly. "No complaints. No resistance."

Zhen Luo lowered his gaze. "I am learning obedience."

The Queen smiled. "Good."

She set the cup down. "Then prove it."

Zhen Luo's fingers tightened slightly inside his sleeves.

"Tomorrow," the Queen continued, "you will accompany Li Shuran to the Spirit Lake. Just the two of you. No excuses."

Zhen Luo bowed. "As Mother commands."

Only when he left did the Queen's smile fade.

"Watch him closely," she said to the shadow behind her. "Especially when he thinks he's alone."

Meanwhile, Li Shuran was already moving.

Han Jian noticed it when the servants began acting strangely—too polite, too eager, too curious. His meals arrived late. His routes were suddenly blocked. Invitations appeared that smelled like traps.

"She's circling," Xu Ren said quietly.

Han Jian lounged on the bed, twirling a hairpin between his fingers. "Good. Predators get sloppy when they're confident."

That afternoon, Li Shuran invited him for tea.

Publicly.

In the flower pavilion.

Han Jian laughed when the invitation arrived. "Wow. Bold."

Xu Ren frowned. "It's a setup."

"Obviously." Han Jian stood. "Which is why I'm going."

The pavilion was bright and open, servants everywhere. Li Shuran sat elegantly, smiling like a saint.

"Han Jian," she greeted warmly. "Thank you for coming."

Han Jian bowed lazily. "I was curious what kind of courage it takes to invite your enemy in public."

Her smile didn't crack. "Enemy? I thought we were merely… rivals."

Han Jian sat. "Rivals fight fair."

Li Shuran leaned closer, voice soft. "Then let me be honest. You're inconvenient."

Han Jian smiled. "You're threatened."

She stiffened—just for a moment.

"You don't belong near His Highness," she continued. "And you won't last."

Han Jian met her gaze calmly. "Funny. People said that before they died."

Li Shuran's eyes darkened. "Careful. The palace hears everything."

Han Jian leaned back. "Then listen closely."

At that exact moment, a familiar presence brushed his senses.

Zhen Luo.

Hidden behind a screen at the edge of the pavilion, forced there by the Queen under the excuse of "observation."

Their eyes met through silk and shadow.

For half a breath—too long.

Li Shuran followed Han Jian's gaze.

Her smile froze.

"Who are you looking at?" she asked sharply.

Han Jian blinked, then laughed lightly. "A butterfly."

Zhen Luo turned away immediately, heart pounding.

Too close.

Far too close.

That night, Zhen Luo returned to the Eastern Palace with his thoughts in chaos. The way Han Jian had smiled under pressure, unafraid. The way he always seemed to know when danger approached.

Who are you? Zhen Luo thought.

Across the palace, Han Jian washed his hands slowly, eyes cold.

"She almost saw you," Xu Ren said.

Han Jian nodded. "Which means she's desperate."

"And the Queen?"

Han Jian smiled faintly. "Testing loyalty is the first step before punishment."

He looked at the moon.

"Let them test."

Because the moment they crossed a certain line—

He would stop playing nice.
