Chapter 22 - The Road That Opens

The city accepted them without resistance.

No delays. No inspections beyond the bare minimum. No eyes lingering too long—yet somehow, none daring to linger at all.

Aurelion felt it the moment they passed beneath the gate.

The pressure didn't return.

Instead, the space around him felt… cooperative.

As if the city had already decided he belonged.

They didn't stop for long.

No tavern.No celebration.No unnecessary rest.

Not because they were tired—but because staying felt wrong.

Aurelion noticed it first when his gaze drifted toward the main square.

Too familiar.

Too still.

Like a place he'd already outgrown.

"We should move," he said suddenly.

Iris blinked. "Move where? We just got back."

"Somewhere else," Aurelion replied. "Another city."

Elayne looked at him, searching his face. "Is there a reason?"

He opened his mouth—

Then closed it.

"I don't know," he admitted. "But staying here feels like waiting for something to happen to us."

Iris tilted her head, then grinned. "Wow. That almost sounded wise."

Aurelion sighed. "Please don't encourage that."

Elayne considered his words for a moment… then nodded.

"I agree," she said. "This city feels… settled. Too settled."

Iris stretched. "Fine by me. New city means new taverns."

That settled it.

They made one stop only—to resupply lightly and sell what little they'd carried out of the dungeon. No bargaining. No arguments. The shopkeeper named a price, and for once, didn't try to push higher.

Aurelion noticed.

Inner thought:It's happening again.Things are… smoothing out.

By evening, they were already on the road.

The path leading away from the city stretched wide and clear, bathed in the amber light of the setting sun. Other roads branched off—but this one felt… obvious.

Unquestioned.

Aurelion walked at the front without realizing it.

No one objected.

Behind him, Elayne matched his pace naturally. Iris followed, humming to herself, boots light against the dirt road.

"So," Iris said lazily. "Any idea where we're going?"

Aurelion shook his head. "Not yet."

She smirked. "Confident for someone without a plan."

"Plans can wait," he replied. "Momentum can't."

Elayne glanced at him. "…You're changing."

He met her eyes briefly. "So is everything else."

Ahead, the road dipped beyond a low hill—where distant lights flickered faintly against the darkening horizon.

Another city.

Not bigger.

Not smaller.

Just… next.

Aurelion felt it then.

Not command.Not authority.

Opportunity.

Inner thought:If value is measured by change…then this road is where it begins again.

They didn't look back.
