Chapter 43 - Chapter 43: Bunker

The bear tribe did not whisper.

They stared.

Openly. Thoroughly. With the heavy, assessing calm of creatures who did not waste energy pretending they were not curious.

Luna felt every single pair of eyes the moment Theo carried her through the central cavern.

The space was enormous, a cathedral of stone shaped by time and patience. Fire pits burned low and steady, smoke drawn upward through natural fissures in the ceiling. Thick furs layered the floors. Carved stone shelves held bundles of herbs, tools, carved bone ornaments, and clay vessels.

It was warm without suffocating. Cool without biting.

It was, she decided instantly, elite cave real estate.

"Okay," she whispered near Theo's ear, "this is giving luxury bunker vibes."

Theo glanced back slightly. "Bunker."

"Safe but stylish."

Alo walked at her other side, shoulders squared, gaze steady. He did not miss the way several unmated males subtly straightened as she passed. Fur smoothed. Chests expanded. Arms flexed as if they had all collectively remembered to be impressive at once.

Luna noticed.

"Oh," she murmured softly. "They're peacocking."

Theo frowned faintly. "Peacocking."

"Trying to look cool."

Alo's lips twitched. "They look foolish."

One of the younger bears rolled his shoulders and casually lifted a stone mortar that probably weighed as much as a small tree.

Luna raised a brow. "Sir, I am visibly pregnant."

He still tried anyway.

The females, in contrast, did not flex. They approached slowly. Warm eyes. Assessing but not hostile. One with thick brown fur braided back from her face gave Luna a small nod.

"You traveled far."

"Yes," Luna said gently.

The female's gaze dropped to her stomach, then back to her face. Something like approval passed between them.

"You came at good time," the female said. "Snow will fall in weeks. Travel would be hard."

Theo's arm tightened slightly around Luna.

Luna swallowed and nodded. "Lucky timing."

Across the cavern, near the shadowed edge where firelight did not fully reach, a pair of silver eyes watched.

Still.

Unblinking.

She felt it.

A prickle along her spine, Warm.

When she turned her head, the figure had shifted slightly deeper into darkness. Broad shoulders. Thick fur. Quiet presence.

Silver eyes.

Alo followed her gaze.

"Who," he muttered under his breath.

"Later," Theo murmured.

They were guided toward a slightly raised alcove carved deeper into the mountain. It was large enough for a family. Thick stone walls. A natural dip in the floor that could be modified.

Luna slid carefully down from Theo's back when they reached it. Alo immediately hovered like she might evaporate.

"I can stand," she insisted.

"You can stand less," Theo replied calmly.

She shot him a look. "I am not a decorative vase."

"You are carrying four cubs."

She paused.

"…Okay that is fair."

The healer arrived shortly after.

He was old. Fur streaked heavily with white. Silver threads woven through dark braids. His eyes sharp and strangely luminous.

The cavern quieted slightly as he approached.

Witch doctor energy. Luna clocked it immediately.

He stopped in front of her and inhaled slowly, as if scent alone told him stories.

"You are strong," he said.

"I try," she replied.

He knelt slowly, surprisingly graceful for someone of his size, and placed a heavy palm just above her stomach without touching.

He closed his eyes.

Silence.

Theo and Alo both went rigid.

After a long moment, the healer opened his eyes.

"Four," he confirmed.

Theo exhaled slowly.

Alo's hand closed around Luna's.

"Healthy," the healer continued. "Strong heartbeats. Good growth."

Luna's shoulders sagged with relief she had not realized she was carrying.

"Thank you," she whispered.

The healer studied her again. "You must rest. Eat more. Much more. Milk must be strong."

Alo straightened. "We will provide."

"Mating is good," the healer added plainly. "It strengthens bond. Calms mother. Encourages growth."

Luna choked slightly.

Theo did not even blink.

Alo nodded solemnly.

The healer tilted his head. "Cannot confirm male or female yet. Could be four males. Could be four females. Could be blessing of both."

Luna blinked. "If one is a girl I will cry."

The healer gave a faint amused rumble. "Two other pregnant females here. You should speak with them. Share knowledge. Share strength."

Luna nodded slowly.

"Due in few weeks," he added. "You came at right time. No more travel. No long walking."

Theo visibly relaxed at that command.

Alo looked smug.

Luna narrowed her eyes. "Don't you dare."

The healer handed her a small bundle of dried herbs. "Steep in hot water. Drink twice a day. For milk."

She took them carefully. "Thank you."

He rose slowly, his brow furrowed as he studied her. "Your gratitude is... unnecessary. You are simply doing what is required."

And then he left.

The cavern slowly returned to its usual rhythm of movement and low conversation.

Luna looked at Theo and Alo.

"Well," she said. "Guess I live here now."

Theo stepped closer and brushed his knuckles gently along her cheek. "We live here."

Alo crouched slightly in front of her. "We make it ours."

Her eyes softened.

"Okay," she said slowly. "If we're committing to cave life, I need upgrades."

Theo blinked. "Upgrades."

"Yes. Pelts. Many pelts. I want maximum softness. If I am birthing four children I deserve peak comfort, and a door for privacy."

Alo looked thoughtful. "We can collect more."

"Also," she added, turning serious, "we need a sunken room."

They both paused.

"A what," Theo asked.

"A baby pit."

Silence.

"Not a dangerous pit," she clarified quickly. "A safe one. Lowered floor in the center. Padded walls. So when they start crawling they cannot crawl out and yeet themselves into a fire."

Alo's brows drew together in concentration.

Theo nodded slowly. "A nest."

"Yes," she said firmly. "Fortified baby bunker."

Alo's eyes lit with purpose.

"I can carve the floor deeper," he said immediately. "Smooth edges. Layer stone. Then pelts."

Theo added, "We can weave thick padding for walls."

Luna grinned. "Exactly. Total baby proofing. I refuse to chase four tiny chaos goblins across a cavern."

Theo frowned faintly. "Chaos goblins."

"Cubs," she corrected.

Alo huffed quietly. "We will build."

And they did.

By evening, Alo was shirtless, muscles flexing with every swing of his carved stone tool as he deepened the natural dip in the cave floor. Theo carried flat stones, setting them carefully to reinforce edges.

Several unmated males lingered nearby pretending not to watch.

One flexed again.

Luna sat on a thick pile of pelts and called out, "If you break your back trying to impress me, I am sending you to the healer."

The male flushed and looked away.

Theo smirked.

The females passed occasionally, offering nods or quiet comments about what materials would be best for lining.

The two pregnant females were brought to meet her.

One was broad and golden-furred, already heavy with child. The other smaller, darker, eyes kind.

They sat with her while Theo and Alo worked.

"You have four," the golden one said with awe.

"Yes."

"You are brave."

Luna snorted softly. "I did not plan this."

They laughed.

Conversation flowed easily. They spoke of cravings. Of discomfort. Of how often the males hovered.

Luna leaned back and sighed dramatically. "Where I'm from, we had cooling systems in every room, beds that felt like clouds, and these little jokes everyone shared..."

The darker female blinked slowly. "Jokes everyone shared?"

"Like drawings with words that make you laugh. My cousin used to send me new ones every morning."

The golden one tilted her head. "We have stories."

Luna considered that.

"…That's actually kind of wholesome."

Later, when the sunken nest was finished, Alo stepped back, chest rising with exertion.

The floor dipped gently in the center, wide enough for furs, with smooth stone edges layered thickly in padding.

Theo lowered the final stack of pelts inside.

It looked… safe.

Contained.

Warmth enveloped her ankles.

Luna stepped carefully down into the steaming water, her toes finding smooth stone beneath.

"Oh," she breathed, glancing at the open doorway where Theo lingered.

"Could we..." she gestured toward the door, eyes downcast. "I'd like some privacy."

Theo's jaw tightened, but he nodded once.

She turned slowly, hands protective over her stomach, waiting.

Alo reached past Theo and pulled the heavy wooden door closed with a definitive thud.

She looked up at them. "You two are nesting harder than I am."

Theo crouched at the edge. "You carry four lives."

"And you carry me," she said softly.

He leaned down and kissed her forehead.

"I love you," he said quietly.

Alo climbed down beside her and wrapped one massive arm around her shoulders.

"We love you," he corrected.

She pressed her face into his chest, laughing softly. "Okay but if I start screaming in labor you are both banned from saying 'you wanted this.'"

Theo blinked. "You did want this."

She pointed at him. "Banned."

Alo laughed, deep and warm.

From the edge of the cavern, those silver eyes watched again.

Unblinking.

Interested.

Luna felt it once more and glanced up.

This time she held the gaze for a breath longer.

Curiosity.

"Okay," she murmured quietly, half joking, half serious. "If any mysterious silver eyed stranger tries to steal me I expect dramatic rescue."

Theo's hand tightened slightly at her waist.

Alo's rumble vibrated against her back.

"No one steals you," Theo said simply.

She smiled.

"Good," she replied.

And then she leaned back into the softest pile of pelts she had ever experienced, sipped her strange herbal tea, and decided that if this was cave life, she could absolutely make it aesthetic.
