(CONTENT WARNING MENTIONING LOSS OF A CHILD)
The cavern had gone very quiet.
Even the red panda cubs eating the food Luna had laid out seemed to sense the tension gathering in the air.
Charlotte shifted slightly in Luna's arms.
She was still small, still only a week old, but she was not unaware. The loud voices, the hostility, the sharp tone in the red panda women's voices reached her in a way that made the little phoenix uneasy.
Her tiny wings twitched.
Then her face scrunched up.
A soft cry escaped her.
Luna felt it immediately.
She pulled Charlotte closer to her chest, pressing a gentle kiss against the baby's hair while rocking her slightly.
"Hey," Luna murmured softly. "It's okay."
Charlotte's cry turned into a small hiccuping whimper as she buried her face against Luna's shoulder.
Theo's posture sharpened beside them.
The phoenix chicks gathered instantly.
Brave chirped angrily.
Smartie Pants puffed up.
Chunky waddled closer to Luna's foot like a very round guard.
Luna kissed Charlotte again.
"You're alright," she whispered. "Mama's here."
Charlotte sniffled.
Then the second red panda woman spoke.
"Shut that thing up."
The words cracked through the cavern like a whip, everything stopped.
Luna froze.
Theo's eyes went cold.
Ash straightened slowly.
Alo's jaw tightened.
The bear warriors around the cavern shifted uneasily.
Charlotte hiccuped again in Luna's arms.
Luna took one slow breath, then another. She gently rocked Charlotte once more, calming the baby before looking back at the woman who had spoken, her voice, when she spoke, was soft.
"Did you lose a cub?"
The red panda woman blinked, "what?"
"Did you lose a cub?" Luna repeated calmly.
The woman's lip curled, "no."
Luna nodded once, then she stepped forward and slapped her.
The sound echoed sharply across the cavern.
The red panda woman stumbled back a step, stunned.
The entire room froze.
Luna stood very still with Charlotte in one arm, her expression calm but her eyes bright with quiet fury. "Never," Luna said quietly, "speak badly about my child."
No one moved.
The red panda woman stared at her, one hand pressed to her cheek.
Theo stepped forward slightly, placing himself between Luna and the rest of the red panda group without even looking at them. The temperature in the cavern dropped several degrees, frost crept quietly across the stone floor near his feet.
The red panda alpha lifted one hand slowly toward his tribe "ENOUGH" His voice carried across the cavern.
The other red panda males pulled the furious woman back before she could react.
Charlotte sniffled again.
Luna immediately kissed her cheek "it's okay," she murmured.
Charlotte looked up at her with watery blue eyes.
Luna wiped the baby's tears gently with her thumb "mummy's got you."
Charlotte hiccuped one last time, whimpering a little. Then she leaned into Luna's shoulder and clung tightly to her shirt.
Behind them Brave hissed fiercely.
Theo listened briefly "He says that was appropriate."
Ash snorted.
Chunky chirped loudly.
Ash tilted his head "He says mummy is scary."
Smartie Pants chirped too.
Ash nodded "He says mummy is also beautiful."
Luna sighed softly and kissed Charlotte again while the cavern slowly began breathing again around them.
The silence after the slap lasted longer than anyone expected, the sound had echoed off the stone walls of the cavern and then simply hung there, like the mountain itself had paused to see what would happen next.
The red panda woman stood frozen where Luna had struck her, one hand pressed against her cheek. Her eyes were wide, stunned more than hurt. No one in this world slapped a beast woman. Females were too rare, too protected, too valuable.
But Luna did not look apologetic. She stood with Charlotte in her arms, one hand still resting gently on the baby's back while Charlotte clung to her shirt with small fists.
Theo remained at Luna's side.
Silent.
Cold.
The air around him had dropped enough that several of the nearest warriors could see faint frost spreading across the stone floor near his boots.
Ash stepped closer behind Luna.
Alo moved to her other side.
The phoenix chicks had gathered tightly around Luna's legs. Brave chirped again, sharp and protective.
Alo listened "He says mummy defended the nest."
Ash nodded once "correct assessment."
Across the cavern the red panda alpha studied Luna with a very different expression now not with anger but with interest. He slowly raised one hand toward his tribe, "that is enough," he said firmly.
The two other red panda women grabbed their furious companion and pulled her back before she could step forward again. She was shaking with humiliation now, her eyes burning as she glared at Luna.
But she stayed back, because the males around Luna had changed.
The bear warriors were watching.
Theo stood like a wall of ice.
Ash looked amused but dangerous.
Alo's expression had gone flat in the way predators did before violence.
And the entire cavern had seen exactly why Luna had struck her.
Charlotte sniffled again in Luna's arms, the baby phoenix had quieted, but she was still clinging tightly.
Luna immediately shifted her attention back to her daughter. "Hey," she whispered softly, she kissed Charlotte's forehead again "don't worry about that, she sick, she was raised like that she cant help it."
Charlotte pouted and looked up at her with watery blue eyes.
Luna gently brushed the tears from her cheeks "you're okay."
Charlotte gave a tiny whimper and buried her face against Luna's shoulder again.
Luna rocked her slowly.
Theo watched the small scene quietly.
After a moment he translated another series of chirps from the phoenix chicks, Brave had puffed himself up and was staring at the red panda women with intense hostility. "He says mummy should bite them next time."
Ash choked on a laugh.
Chunky chirped loudly.
Ash tilted his head "he says mummy was very scary."
Smartie Pants chirped too.
Ash nodded again "he says mummy is also very beautiful."
Luna sighed softly "thank you, boys."
The phoenix chicks looked pleased.
Meanwhile the red panda cubs had continued eating the snacks Luna had placed on the ground. They were still watching her though, their small eyes wide with quiet awe, one of them stepped forward hesitantly, he bowed slightly, it was clumsy, but sincere.
The red panda alpha noticed, he looked at the cub, then back at Luna, he then did something unexpected, he bowed his head slightly toward her "Thank you," he said quietly.
The cavern stirred again, the red panda males lowered their heads in similar gestures. The three red panda women looked furious.
Mira leaned closer to Luna and whispered under her breath "oh this is going to make them hate you even more."
Luna sighed "i wasn't trying to start a war."
Kessa snorted beside her "You didn't."
She gestured toward the red panda cubs now happily eating "you started a reputation."
Charlotte finally relaxed fully in Luna's arms again, her whimpers faded, she looked up at Luna with wide trusting eyes, when she reached up and patted Luna's cheek with one tiny hand.
Luna smiled, "feeling better baby?"
Charlotte babbled softly.
Brave chirped proudly.
Theo listened "he says Charlotte approves of mummy's behavior."
Ash crossed his arms and nodded thoughtfully.
"Good, im honored."
Chunky chirped again.
Theo translated calmly "He says mummy should still collect more mates."
Luna buried her face in Charlotte's hair while laughing helplessly.
"Chunky," she said weakly "you are one week old."
Chunky chirped proudly anyway.
Across the cavern, high above the gathering on the stone ledge near the upper tunnels, The silver bear watched Luna with growing fascination, and this time he did not even try to hide it.
Chunky chirped again.
Low voices layered over each other, beasts shifting, tails brushing stone, the constant hum of presence. Heat gathered unevenly in pockets where bodies clustered, fading into cooler shadows near the walls. Light from scattered torches flickered against the rock, catching fur, scales, eyes too many eyes.
It wasn't deliberate, no one had drawn a line, no one had said stay back, but they did.
A loose circle, uneven, shifting, but consistent. Enough room for her to move, to breathe, to sit with Charlotte in her arms and Chunky chirping nonsense at her chest like he owned the entire cavern.
Luna adjusted Charlotte slightly against her shoulder, fingers smoothing down her back in slow, absent strokes. The cub had already settled again, small body warm, breath steady, one hand fisted loosely in Luna's shirt like she had decided this was hers now.
"Don't listen to him," Luna murmured softly. "He's got opinions already."
Chunky chirped louder.
Theo, without missing a beat, added, "He says that is because no one else is making good decisions."
Luna huffed out a laugh. "That sounds about right."
Few nearby beasts shifted, some of them glancing over again, drawn not just by the sound but by the ease of it. The softness. It didn't match the rest of the cavern. It didn't match them, that was the problem.
One of the younger beasts edged a little closer, then stopped, catching himself before stepping into the space that wasn't his. His gaze lingered on the cubs, then flicked to Luna, then away again like he'd looked too long.
Above, the silver bear shifted his weight slightly, claws scraping faintly against stone as he leaned forward, attention fixed.
On her.
His nostrils flared once, slow, deliberate, like he was testing the air again, confirming something he already knew. Whatever he found there, whatever he was tracing, it held him in place. 'If that red panda wants you, he can come through me first.'
"Careful, little fox," Theo murmured.
His hand closed around her wrist, slow and deliberate.
"You're starting to forget who you're surrounded by."
