After finishing his conversation with Mei, Kael separated from her and began investigating Yagami Light. At present, Light was probably just a high school student, not yet famous online. But Kael remembered that Light's father was a high-ranking official in the police department. Investigating such an official wasn't difficult—he was well-known within the force.
Kael concealed himself and followed Inspector Megure's group as they left the resort. He planned to obtain Light's home address through one of them. In the end, he chose the fool, Takagi Wataru.
Soon, the opportunity came. Inspector Megure left alone to return to the station, leaving Miwako and Wataru to handle transporting the yakuza boss's corpse. During this, Wataru suddenly rushed to the restroom. Kael followed him inside and hypnotized him.
"Do you know Yagami Soichiro?" Kael asked, recalling that Light's father was named Soichiro.
Wataru nodded. "Yagami Soichiro is a senior official in the police department—my superior's superior."
In other words, he knew him.
Kael smiled. He had thought that if Wataru didn't know Yagami Soichiro, he would have to hypnotize Sato instead. But Takagi did know him—and he was Megure's superior. Perfect.
"Do you know his home address?" Kael continued.
Wataru nodded again and gave him the address. Satisfied, Kael left, releasing Wataru from hypnosis before departing. Takagi, unaware he had been hypnotized, simply finished his business and left.
Meanwhile, Kael arrived at Yagami Light's house using the address. It was afternoon—Light should still be at school. Only his mother was home. Kael hypnotized her and learned which room was Light's.
Entering the room, Kael carefully examined it. He remembered from the story that Light hid the Death Note in a drawer's false bottom. After searching, he focused on the desk drawer's compartment. Sure enough, he found a black notebook.
It looked ordinary, with nothing unusual even up close. Before touching it, Kael checked the surroundings. He saw no sign of Ryuk.
He picked up the notebook, still observing the room. Ryuk did not appear. There were two possible reasons: First, the notebook was fake, so Ryuk didn't show. Second, the notebook was real, but Ryuk wasn't in Light's room at the moment.
After all, death gods weren't bound to the notebook. It was merely their tool for killing. In the original story, Light obtained the notebook because Ryuk dropped it into the human world. This proved death gods could act independently of the notebook. Perhaps Ryuk was with Light instead, finding it more entertaining.
Kael opened the notebook and found rule after rule for killing. He also saw many names written inside. But the yakuza boss's name was not among them. However, he noticed torn pages. He guessed Light had ripped out a page to use at school, since carrying the whole notebook was inconvenient. In the original story, Light had done the same.
Kael examined the notebook thoroughly. At first glance, it seemed ordinary. But holding it now, he discovered something interesting. Inside was a unique curse unlike any he had seen.
As a demon cultivator with vast knowledge of dark arts, Kael was well-versed in curses. In the cultivation world, a demon cultivator ignorant of curses was considered weak. He knew thousands—from minor ailments to death, from family misfortune to bloodline destruction. Some were so powerful they could linger for generations, afflicting descendants for eighteen generations. Though Kael knew of them, his current strength was insufficient to cast such high-level curses.
Yet the curse within the Death Note was unlike any he had encountered. It was fascinating, and he couldn't immediately discern its mechanism. Perhaps only by devouring Ryuk could he fully understand it. Unfortunately, Ryuk wasn't present, so Kael couldn't act.
Still, the notebook was now in his possession. Sooner or later, Ryuk would appear. Then Kael could strike.
Anyone familiar with the Death Note knew Ryuk was a trickster god. Bored, he had dropped his notebook into the human world, where the obsessive Yagami Light found it. That led to the events of the original story.
For such a trickster god, Kael had no intention of showing mercy.
