Chapter 1 - THE FAILED AWAKENING

The sky above Aurelion City didn't shine. It watched.

Gray clouds hung over the Awakening Plaza like judgment. They were pressing down on the thousands of people gathered below. There were students, nobles, families and officials.

You could feel hope, fear and ambition. All of these emotions were simmering beneath the circular platform at the center. The platform had glowing pillars that were humming with ancient energy.

This was the Awakening Ritual. It was the moment that decided everything.

The instructor said, "Next. Step forward."

Another student walked up. He was a noble. You could tell by the way he moved. The crowd was leaned toward him instead of away.

He touched the crystal.

Light exploded.

Everyone gasps.

A big spectral beast formed behind him. Its presence was rippling through the air like heat.

The instructor announced, "A-rank Echo."

The crowd erupted into applause.

The boy smiled.

Course he did.

A-rank meant power, status and future.

Kalen Vire was watching from the back. He was silent, unnoticed and unimportant.

Someone near him muttered, "Must be nice."

Another person said, "Yeah, not like it matters for people like us."

Some laughed.

Kalen did not react.

He had heard worse.

The instructor said, "Next. Kalen Vire."

His name barely carried.

There was no reaction, no anticipation and no expectation.

The crowd just showed a ripple of indifference.

Kalen stepped forward.

Each step felt heavier than it should.

This was not because of fear but because of familiarity.

He already knew how this would go.

He would have resonance, a weak Echo or maybe no Echo at all.

That was how it had always been.

Kalen reached the platform.

The crystal pulsed faintly.

The instructor said, "Place your hand " without looking at him.

Kalen obeyed.

The moment his skin touched the crystal everything changed.

The world did not explode.

It just vanished.

Sound collapsed into silence.

Light twisted inward.

Then there was darkness.

It was not empty not cold.

It was alive and watching.

Something was moving inside it.

Not something,. Three things.

There was a presence like a blade resting against his throat.

Another presence was like electricity dancing along his spine.

The last one was warm, dangerously warm.

A voice said, "You took your time."

The voice was calm, female and absolute.

Kalen did not move.

He asked, "Who—"

Another voice interrupted, sharper and laced with amusement. "You are late " it said. "We have been waiting."

A third voice followed, softer but more dangerous. ". Now you are finally ours."

Kalen's heart slammed.

He said, "This is not part of the ritual."

There was a chuckle.

One of the voices said, "Ritual? Child you were never meant to awaken."

Something stepped forward from the darkness.

She was with golden hair that flowed royally and ran down her back.

Her hair was heavy and magnificent.

Golden markings glowed faintly across her skin pulsing like power.

Her eyes were gold, not bright not warm, but dominant.

She was Asha'Kareth.

She said, "You were meant to be empty - A void."

She stepped closer.

". Yet here you are."

The second presence appeared beside her.

With silver hair and glowing blue eyes.

She had a smile that felt like a glitch in reality.

She said, "Ohhh this is fun. He doesn't even understand what he is."

She was circling him.

The third appeared behind him.

She had red hair cascading like flame.

Her warm breath was near his ear.

She whispered, "Do not scare him. We need him intact."

Her tone suggested the opposite.

Kalen turned slowly.

He asked, "What is this?"

There were three goddesses, three presences, all looking at him.

They were not looking at him as a host or a vessel. As something else.

Asha'Kareths gaze sharpened.

She said quietly "This is a mistake the world will regret."

Then reality snapped back.

The plaza erupted.

The crystal beneath Kalens hand was no longer glowing.

It was cracking.

Lines of light splintered outward like fractures, in space itself.

The crowd shouting,

"What—?!".

Impossible—"

The instructor stumbled back.

The air warped.

Pressure descended.

Then there was a burst of energy that exploded outward.

Students screamed.

The crystal shattered.

Kalen collapsed.

The instructor said shakily "Result unknown."

There was silence. Then whispers.

"Did he fail?". Nothing manifested."

They said, "Zero resonance" and "F-rank."

Kalen was lying there barely conscious.

But inside he could still hear the goddesses.

"You survived," Lyra hummed.

Asha'Kareths voice followed, " course he did."

There was a pause.

Then, "Now the real awakening begins."
