Chapter 30 - Chapter 30: Ser Jorah the Bear

According to Ser Willem Darry's stories, the Kingsguard were always noble and handsome, in addition to being valiant warriors.

However, the Ser Jorah before her eyes, even draped in the white cloak, didn't seem handsome in the slightest.

Princess Daenerys secretly apologized to herself for judging a book by its cover.

The Knight thanked Viserys profusely and pledged his loyalty to his King.

Viserys maintained the dignified air of a monarch who respected talent.

It seems this Kingsguard set I got from the chest is quite effective, the King thought to himself.

Since Magister Illyrio's servants had all been driven away, Daenerys had to personally show Ser Jorah to his quarters.

As they walked out of the room, Daenerys ordered the Unsullied to return Ser Jorah's belongings.

The Knight thanked the Princess politely. This changed Daenerys's impression of the distant North. In her mind, Northerners were supposed to be valiant and... rugged?

Ser Jorah's belongings were meager: a waterskin, a short sword, and a heavy cloth bundle with unknown contents.

There was also a longsword, but the Knight probably wouldn't need it anymore. Viserys had given him a better, more ornate one.

Thinking that a Kingsguard should live close to his King, the Princess arranged for Ser Jorah to stay in the room next to her brother Viserys.

"Just a few small things, Princess. I wished to bring valuable gifts, but being as poor as I am, I can only offer my loyalty and some books from my homeland."

Seeing that the Knight entered the room alone and seemed satisfied, he took a stack of books out of the cloth bundle that had made Daenerys curious.

"These record the history of the Seven Kingdoms and songs about legends. I personally favor the ones about Ser Duncan the Tall."

Ser Jorah tried his best not to let his unhandsome face offend the Princess.

"You need not apologize, Ser. These are very valuable to me." Daenerys showed interest in the gift, which relieved Jorah.

Stroking the books, Daenerys felt the ancient history of her homeland within them. Honestly, most of what she knew about the Seven Kingdoms came from Ser Willem's stories.

But Ser Willem was a martial man. He always picked topics that interested him, like Ser Arthur Dayne's unparalleled prowess or the dangers of the battlefield.

And, of course, how despicable and evil the Usurper was in his eyes.

Perhaps I can learn other things from these books.

The Princess accepted the gift. It seemed she wouldn't be bored for a while.

During dinner that evening, Viserys invited all the players to dine together in the spacious banquet hall, as was his custom.

This made it easier for him to check in on what kind of trouble the two most "problematic" guilds staying at the mansion had cooked up.

The King had to be constantly on guard lest these guys blow his courtyard sky-high one day.

Fortunately, most players had left the mansion after joining mercenary guilds and accepting quests. Otherwise, even the massive banquet hall couldn't seat 3,000 players.

Honestly, after tasting the in-game food once, most players were repulsed. But gradually, they realized that while they could log off to handle their physiological needs, their in-game characters couldn't regenerate hunger or stamina offline.

Realizing this, the players had no choice but to pinch their noses and eat the local "dark cuisine" while secretly praying that the two native cooks recently hired for the mansion could make something edible.

Ser Jorah's mind went blank with shock. He hadn't expected to find so many loyalists of the old dynasty in a foreign land.

He thought that besides the Unsullied, he would be the only sworn sword by the King's side. He didn't expect so many people with Targaryen sympathies.

This made his arrival as a Kingsguard look like a desperate move by a destitute exile.

Although the Knight had come to serve as a pawn for the Spider in hopes of a royal pardon—which strictly speaking was far less noble than joining out of desperation—he had already decided to cut ties with the other side of the Narrow Sea.

While trying to maintain his status in the True Dragon's heart, he naturally forgot all about the Stags and Spiders across the water.

What? You say if I do a good job, you'll restore my knighthood? Sorry, I'm already King Viserys's Kingsguard. Don't contact me again; I'm afraid His Grace will misunderstand.

Ser Jorah wished two assassins would pop out of a corner right now so he could draw his sword and prove his value and loyalty to the King.

"Who's that? A new NPC?"

"Dunno. But looking at that build... if I 1v1'd him, I feel like I'd be slightly inferior."

"You'd die if you didn't brag, wouldn't you? 'Slightly inferior'? Within three seconds, he'd have you kneeling on the ground begging him not to die."

"Are you guys not looking at his armor? Honestly, I'm jealous."

The players were equally curious about the sudden appearance of Jorah Mormont. The Grenadier Corps players were already discussing how many times this bear-like guy could hack their Guild Leader to death before getting tired.

Meanwhile, the players of the Brotherhood Without Banners were tirelessly debating the correct dosage of poison needed to kill the big guy without wasting resources.

Ser Jorah repeatedly refused the King's offer to sit, standing dutifully behind Viserys. He stared sternly at the players, whom he viewed as undisciplined mercenaries.

Of course, the Knight swore he didn't look down on this group. A few years ago, he might have claimed that with a thousand trained knights, he could sweep away the Dothraki that the Pentoshi Magisters feared so much.

But now, valiant as he was, he would never underestimate any opponent, even an inconspicuous or scrawny mercenary.

Whether now or in the future, he would treat every opponent equally, even if they were a woman or an old man.

Just as the players from the Grenadier Corps and the Brotherhood Without Banners were complaining that the new cook's pigeon and apple stew tasted terrible...

Far outside the city of Pentos, a mercenary company formed by the player guild Heroes Guild was in crisis.

"Are the local bandits this arrogant?! We literally just left the city! Even the bandits in Let the Bullets Fly weren't this bold!"

As a veteran player and a Scout, Step_Sis_Im_Stuck had naturally succumbed to the Third Young Master Lin's financial offensive.

He thought the bandit suppression mission would be a walk in the park. Who knew their 30-man mercenary group would be targeted the moment they left the city gates?

"Ptooey! Just wait till I get back and call the boys to kill you bastards!"

With an arrow in his back, Step_Sis ran alongside two of his subordinates, looking back as they fled.
