In an endless silver void that stretched to infinity, purple-gold motes of cosmic dust drifted around lazily in brilliant arcs and swirls, forming images of rivers the size of Galaxy and ancient symbols from eras before time.
Unfortunately, there was no one to appreciate the view.
Well...almost no one.
In a corner of the silver void, a particular black humanoid blot was floating cross-legged within a thick cloud of purple motes, his thoughts echoing across the silent expanse.
'Wow. I actually got hit by a truck.'
'I wonder if I'll still get transmigrated or it means I died for good.'
He sighed – or at least tried to – though this form was featureless and was more of a hole in the void than an actual body.
Anyways, he had been in this void for what seemed like weeks, or maybe minutes, time was a bit muddled here. All he remembered was that, right after being run over by the cliche truck, he had found himself in this void.
He had tried all sorts of things to get a change yet nothing worked.
Yelling.
Meditating.
He even tried calling 'status'.
Yet it didn't work.
So he waited.
All he had for company were these purple motes which seemed to crowd around him for some reason wherever he went and seemed to shape themselves according to his thoughts so he formed a simple cube and sat on it.
'Though...' He looked at the beautiful view around him. 'I expected the void to be black, but I guess this works too.'
It was beautiful in a way words could never do justice to.
And more importantly...
It was...peaceful.
Until it wasn't.
"Oh~? A black soul? I haven't seen one of those in a long time." An amused, feminine voice echoed from behind him.
He 'looked' behind him to see a golden crack in the space which expanded bit by bit until it became a fracture the size of a house.
An intense aura spilled out of the fracture making the purple motes scatter far from it.
Rael had a bad feeling from the fracture as it pulsed ominously, sending shivers down his 'spine'. And suddenly, a single, pale, foot emerged from the portal...and then another and now a being only seen in biblical text and fantasy stories stood before him in all it's glory.
An actual angel.
Her skin was flawless, sculpted in a perfect hourglass figure that would make most men drool coupled with a face that was simply incomparable to even the most beautiful of Earth's women. Her hair was a waist-lenght cascade of brilliant silver that swayed slightly with every movement, spilling down her back in a glittering wave that seemed to glow faintly with celestial light.
Six radiant wings unfurled behind her, each feather glowing with soft luminescence. They did not flap. They simply existed, filling the space behind her and casting halos of light that bent the shadows around them.
She wore robes of pure white traced with faint golden sigils that pulsed with an aura of sanctity. A thin halo hovered around her head, not above —not solid, but a revolving ring of light etched with countless golden eyes and divine script, rotating endlessly and obscuring her eyes from view.
Yet, Real could feel the piercing gazes from those countless eyes.
"Hmm, I'm curious...why did you throw away your life, resisting the summoning."
Her voice was calm yet laced with light curiousity.
Rael absentmindedly scratched his cheek as he was honestly kinda regretting not being part of the summoning but his writer instincts had taken over at that moment and he just jumped out so as not to become some background cannon fodder.
But he couldn't tell her that.
Right before he could come up with an excuse, she spoke up, suddenly very close to his form.
"Either way, it's quite surprising that you can maintain consciousness in the void. Hmm? Are you a voidwalker perhaps?"
"A v-voidwalker? What's that?" He stammered, a bit uncomfortable from the proximity. Though, at the back of his mind, the word seemed to ring a bell.
The halo paused for a moment, the eyes narrowing as she tilted her head.
"You don't know what a voidwalker is?" She tilted her head back as if pondering and answered after a moment.
"You could say they are beings with a third option after death...I guess?"
"Wait...you don't mean?" His brows—or whatever was there—raised in shock.
"Oh, so you know what voidwalkers are already. Then you really are a voidwalker." She said softly, a smirk hovering at the edge of her lips.
Rael was shocked to the core as he heard the Angel's confirmation. He had always played off reincarnation and transmigration as just a nice thought but the events of the past few days had turned his entire viewpoint upside down. To think isekai was actually a real thing.
"Wait, so the voidwalkers from my books are real? You're telling me I actually wrote a whole world into being?"
"Yes, and no." She said with a sigh as she hovered around him, her many eyes twinkling in amusement.
"The voidwalkers you wrote are indeed real but it's inaccurate to say you wrote them and more of like you subconsciously remembered the events."
Rael held his chin as he fell into deep thought. He remembered that he had started the book Deadbeat Demon Slayer after having a weird dream and, now that he thought of it, the ideas for the book only came when he's fully focused or asleep.
So, it might not be too far off to say that he might have lived the story once.
But as who? There were many characters directly involved in the main plot.
And four of them were voidwalkers.
The book wasn't even finished, but she made it seem like it was something that had all happened in the past but even knowing it was real didn't suddenly help him remember.
He shook his head, clearing away the many useless thoughts clouding his mind.
He had basically learnt that he was a voidwalker, which was just another name for a transmigrator.
To be more precise, they are beings that could cross worlds without being needing to be summoned, though most could only do so through reincarnation.
Another thing was that they all managed to become targets of [Fate], therebyaking them protagonists.
"And I'm one of them huh." He muttered incredulously.
"It appears so." The angel said casually, as if she hadn't just declared him inhuman.
"So what, I get the system now."
She shook her head slowly.
"In normal scenarios, a voidwalker would automatically awaken a system based on their [Soulscript] whereas a summoned human can only awaken the system upon completing an appropriate trial. And since you're technically a summon..."
"I have to undergo a trial too."
"Precisely. That part is unfortunately non-negotiable."
Sigh. "Are there any specific benefits to this trial?"
"Well, you could say it helps avoid some particularly troublesome scans. Plus, there's a higher chance of awakening something good."
Rael sighed again before standing up and floating directly in front of her.
He stretched out his hand towards her as her form began to emit a soft golden glow.
"I accept the Great Void's trial."
