Chapter 81 - The Edge of Resolve

Chapter 81

(The Edge of Resolve)

Ashveil swept forward once again.

The sword no longer sought overwhelming force. Every strike pursued the smallest opening, every movement flowed naturally into the next, leaving no unnecessary motion behind. Dark Pryan had abandoned the desire to overpower Kaien. Instead, he sought certainty.

One clean strike.

That was enough.

Kaien understood it.

He moved with the same economy, his body yielding only when it needed to. A slight turn of his shoulder carried him beyond the sword's edge. A shift of his foot redirected the line of attack. Every defense seemed almost effortless, but each demanded timing that few in the world could reproduce.

Stone shattered around them.

The chamber continued collapsing under the weight of attacks that never found their intended target.

Dark Pryan appeared beside one of the ancient pillars, using its surface as support before launching himself toward Kaien from above.

Ashveil descended.

Kaien stepped aside.

The sword split the pillar from top to bottom.

Before the upper half had even begun to fall, Dark Pryan twisted his wrist, turning the downward strike into a horizontal slash.

Kaien ducked beneath it.

The severed pillar crashed behind him.

The impact shook the entire underground chamber.

Dust swallowed both figures.

For a heartbeat...

Nothing moved.

Then two silhouettes burst from opposite sides of the cloud.

Steel met steel.

A sharp metallic cry echoed through the ruins.

It was the first time their weapons had collided.

The force of the impact scattered the surrounding dust in every direction.

Dark Pryan pressed forward without hesitation.

Ashveil danced through a relentless sequence of strikes, each one arriving before the last had truly ended.

Kaien's hands remained empty.

Yet every movement of his arms altered the path of the blade just enough that it failed to reach him.

Dark Pryan's expression remained calm.

But his attacks became faster.

Sharper.

More direct.

He was adapting.

Every exchange taught him something.

Every failed strike disappeared from the next sequence.

Kaien noticed.

His student had always learned quickly.

This...

Was something else entirely.

The rhythm of the battle changed.

Dark Pryan suddenly abandoned offense.

He stepped back.

Only once.

Kaien stopped.

Neither attacked.

Broken stone continued falling from the ceiling between them.

"You've stopped observing."

Dark Pryan's voice was quiet.

"You've begun fighting."

Kaien offered no answer.

Dark Pryan smiled faintly.

"Good."

The chamber exploded beneath his feet.

He vanished.

Not through raw speed.

Through perfect timing.

His movement began at the precise instant Kaien shifted his weight.

For the first time...

Kaien's body reacted instead of anticipating.

Ashveil slipped past his guard.

A thin crimson line appeared across Kaien's left arm.

Blood dripped silently onto the fractured stone.

Dark Pryan landed several steps away.

Neither spoke.

The cut was shallow.

Almost insignificant.

Yet it existed.

Kaien looked briefly at the wound before lifting his gaze once more.

There was no surprise upon his face.

Only quiet acknowledgment.

Dark Pryan had crossed a line.

He had proven he possessed the ability to wound him.

The battle could no longer remain a lesson.

Far above the underground ruins...

The search continued.

Seris led the second group through another abandoned corridor beneath the grounds.

Behind her walked Elyra, Caelum, Neris, Rhea, Isen, Liora, Brann and Kerrin.

Hours had passed since communication with Mireya's team had disappeared.

Every branching passage they explored led only to more ruins.

No traces.

No voices.

Only silence.

Caelum glanced toward another collapsed tunnel.

"This is the third dead end."

"We keep moving," Seris answered without slowing.

"They have to be somewhere."

Elyra rested one hand against the ancient wall.

"There are old mana pathways beneath us."

"They're unstable."

"I can't trace them properly."

Neris frowned.

"If they encountered the infiltrators..."

"They'll hold until we find them."

Seris answered immediately.

She believed it.

She had to.

The tunnels grew quiet again.

Then—

A pulse of mana spread through the underground ruins.

Everyone stopped.

A second pulse followed.

Unlike the chaotic waves from the battle, this one carried structure.

Recognition.

An academy emergency signal.

Rhea looked toward the darkness ahead.

"...That came from the eastern tunnels."

"No."

Elyra closed her eyes briefly.

"Lower."

"Much lower."

Seris didn't hesitate.

"Move."

She broke into a sprint.

The others followed instantly.

The emergency signal could only mean one thing.

Someone had found the others.

Or...

Someone desperately needed help.

Deep beneath them...

Neither Kaien nor Dark Pryan noticed.

The duel had reached a point where the outside world no longer existed.

Only the next exchange remained.
