They weren't as strong as Professor Lizard, but their physical attributes were far beyond those of ordinary people. Furthermore, they seemed to have lost their intelligence, becoming monsters driven purely by instinct, and began to attack those who had miraculously avoided transformation.

In the original story, Spider-Man did not defeat Professor Lizard. Instead, he used his agility to use the Canary Device to launch the antidote to the Lizard Serum throughout the city.
After Professor Lizard absorbed the antidote, he turned back into a human form, his humanity was awakened, and he chose to give up the fight. Only then did Spider-Man achieve victory.

Chen Chen's arm exploded, and the rubbery substance quickly covered the Lizard-Man, completely digesting and absorbing it.
