Chapter 1 - Outlaws from the West

By 1899, the age of outlaws and gunslingers was at an end.

America was becoming a land of laws...

Even the west had mostly been tamed.

A few gangs still roamed but they were being hunted down and destroyed.

It's up to a nighttime in the Grizzlies where the members of the Van der Linde gang are seen hauling wagons through a chilly snowstorm. They all appear to be freezing, and some are huddled up inside the wagon. Dutch van der Linde and Hosea Matthews are seen commanding the band of wagons. Davey Callander, a wounded gang member in the back of a wagon is seen clutching his wounds along with a few other gang members keeping warm. Reverend Orville Swanson is seen stepping out of a wagon to go talk with Dutch.

"Abigail says he's dying, Dutch. We'll have to stop some place," Swanson says.

"Okay," Dutch says. "Arthur's out looking, I sent him up ahead."

Swanson nods and heads back into the wagons. Dutch looks back at the wagons while Hosea speaks to him.

"If we don't stop soon, we'll all be dying. This weather, it's May... I'm just hoping the law got as lost as we did," Hosea says, pointing into the distance at something ahead.

"There. Arthur!" Dutch proclaims. "Any luck?"

A figure is seen approaching the wagons on their horse, who is revealed to be Arthur Morgan. He stops and lifts his hat up to speak to the men.

"I found a place where we can get some shelter. Let Davey rest while he... you know," Arthur says, turning his horse around in the direction that the wagon is heading. "An old mining town, abandoned, it ain't far. Come on."

"Come on!" Dutch proclaims.

Dutch commands the wagons and the horses to move forward. The wagons and horses start to move forward, following Arthur to his provided location.

Inside of a cabin, which then has its door cautiously opened by Hosea. After checking the cabin for inhabitants and confirming that it is safe, holsters his gun and puts down his lantern.

"Bring him in here," Hosea says.

Abigail Roberts then enters the cabin, followed by Bill Williamson and Arthur carrying Davey's now dead body on a stretcher. Dutch walks up to the entrance and walks the rest of the gang members in before eventually going in himself.

"Miss Gaskill... get that fire lit quick. Miss Jones, bring in whatever blankets we have. Mr. Pearson, see what we've got in terms of food." The aforementioned gang members get on with Susan Grimshaw's orders while the rest of the gang gathers around Davey's deceased corpse. By now, everyone has entered the cabin and the door is now closed.

"Davey's dead," Abigail says.

"There was... nothing more you could have done," Swanson responses.

A gang member places coins over Davey's eyes, signifying his death.

"What are we gonna do?" Hosea asks, aproaching to Dutch. "We need supplies."

"Well, first of all you're gonna stay here... and you are gonna get yourself warm." Dutch answers. "Now, I sent John and Micah scouting up ahead. Arthur and I, we're gonna ride out and see if we can find one of 'em."

"In this?" Arthur says, before Dutch looks at the blizzard outside.

"Just for a short bit... I don't see what other choice we have." Dutch response, looking out to the rest of the gang members.

"Listen... listen to me all of you, for a moment." Dutch now has the attention of all of the gang members in the cabin. "Now, we've had... well, a bad couple of days. I loved Davey... Jenny... Sean, Mac... they may be okay, we don't know. But we've lost some folks. Now, if I could... throw myself in the ground in their stead... I'd do it... gladly. But... we're gonna ride out... and we are gonna find some food. Everybody, we're safe now. There ain't nobody following us through a storm like this one... and by the time they get here... well we're gonna be... we're gonna be long gone. We've been through worse than this before. Mr. Pearson... Miss Grimshaw... I need you to turn this place into a camp. We may be here for a few days. Now all of you... all of you... get yourselves warm. Stay strong. Stay with me. We ain't done yet!"

"Come on, Arthur." Dutch says, walking over to a lantern, before grabing it and walking back.

Arthur then follows Dutch outside of the cabin.

"Alright, we've got some work to do," Susan says outside of the cabin to Arthur and Dutch, who are now outside, before Arthur closes the door.

"Well, we ain't run into them yet. So... they both must have headed down the hill." Dutch says.

"Sure. Hey... I ain't had time to ask. What really went down back there on that boat?" Arthur asks.

"We missed you, that's what happened. Come on." Dutch responses before they both walk away from the cabin into the blizzard.

"Hey!" Charles shouts, seeing coming to Dutch and Arthur with two horses. "You need horses?"

"Oh yeah... and Mr. Smith, get yourself indoors. You need to rest that hand." Dutch responses, before he and Arthur mount the horses that Charles Smith had found.

"I'll live." Charles says.

"Get indoors, son! I... we, need you strong." Dutch responses.

"Okay." Charles obedients, watching Dutch and Arthur as they have started moving into the snow. They are venturing out to go find other members of the gang who had been scouting ahead.

"Come on, let's go." Dutch says.

"Ain't sure what we're gonna find out here, Dutch." Arthur responses.

"We have to try. Stay close, we'll do our best to stick to the trail." Dutch says in response.

"This goddamn weather." Arthur says.

"Been two days or more like this now. Oh, it has to blow over soon." Dutch says as they both arrive at a small land bridge over a creek.

"Careful on this bridge here." Dutch warns before they make it over the bridge.

"Can't believe we lost Davey too." Arthur says acceptingly.

"He's the last one, Arthur." Dutch resposnes. "No more. We need to get those people warm and fed."

"Least we don't need to worry about Pinkertons tailing us in this." Arthur proclaims.

"A couple more days, we'll be on the other side." Dutch says uprisingly. "You need to help me pick the others back up. You're the only one I can rely on to stay strong right now."

"We got fire and shelter, that's a start." Arthur reposenses hopefully, as they both continue to ride in silence.

"So... Do you think it was a trap? In Blackwater?" Arthur breaks the silence.

"That many men?" Dutch asks in response. "Oh, they knew we were coming. But there was money on that boat alright, lots of it. I stashed what we took with all our money in town, just before we fled." Dutch then spots something coming towards them.

"Hey, I think I see something up the path." Dutch says as they both hold up their lights and slow down to investigate. "You up ahead! Who's there?" Dutch shouts into the mist.

Out of the mist, the person coming to them is revealed to be Micah Bell. He has found something that he believes is worth investigating.

"Micah." Dutch says welcomly.

"Gentlemen." Micah responses.

"Found anything?" Dutch asks.

"I think so." Micah answers. "Found a little homestead down thataway."

"Okay. Anyone home?" Dutch continues.

"Sure." Micha responses. "Place is blazing with light and noise. Sounded like a party."

"Let's go see." Dutch commands.

"Follow me." Micah says as he turns around to the direction of the homestead and starts moving. Dutch and Arthur follow behind.

"How's Davey doing?" Micah asks.

"Ah, he didn't make it. Nor did little Jenny." Dutch answers gloomly.

"That's too bad." Micah responses acceptingly. "Davey was a real fighter. Both of them Callander boys is, or... was."

"Yeah." Dutch responses.

"And Mac and Sean?" Micah asks.

"We don't know." Dutch answers.

"Quite a business." Micah responses.

"I'm glad you're alright, Micah." Dutch proclaims.

"Always." Micah answers steadly.

"Ask him if he's seen John." Arthur says to Dutch, not reaching Micah because of massive snow fall.

"Hey, have you seen John, Micah?" Dutch delivers Arthur's qeustion to Micah.

"Didn't see much of anything once this storm came in." Micah responses to Dutch.

"He hasn't seen him." Dutch messages back to Micah's response to Arthur.

"He'll be fine." Arthur respones. "Things always turn out right for that boy."

"I hope... Mac and Sean are still out there somewhere too." Dutch says as he slows down to let Arthur overtake him. "Move up, Arthur, I'll cover the rear." Dutch and Arthur switch positions as the three continue to drive.

"You sure about this, Micah?" Arthur asks.

"Mr. Morgan, I never thought I would be so pleased to see your face." Micah responses. "Been kind of... lonely out here. Where's everyone else?"

"Old mining camp, back up the hill." Arthur answers.

"Huddled around a fire waiting for daddy to put food on the table. I've said it before, we've got too many mouths to feed." Micah responses.

"Well we got a few less now, so you should be happy." Arthur responses with sarcasm.

"That ain't fair, Arthur. I earn my share. You think it's unreasonable to expect others to do the same?" Micah responses, before pausing a little. "Where are all the others?" Micah asks.

"Old mining camp, back up the hill." Arthur responses. "It ain't much but it's shelter. So, this house... you speak to the people there already?"

"No, like Dutch told us... look, but don't talk to no one. Just following orders, you know me." Micah answers. "I'm a good boy." Micah says so Dutch couldn't hear him.

"Right..." Arthur responses as the three have ridden a considerable distance by now, but they are almost at the homestead.

"How much further?" Arthur finally asks.

"Not far." Micah responses.

"What does that mean?" Arthur continues.

"Not far." Micah responses, staying on his own.

"Thanks." Arthur responses dryly.

"Oh, goddamn this snow. Gets right to the bone." Dutch says as the gang finally reaches a location near the homestead. They slow down and get ready to dismount.

"Okay, let's keep it down now, gentlemen." Micah says. "It's just up ahead."

"Snuff and stash those lantern, boys." Dutch orders. "Best you two lie low on this." He says as he, Arthur and Micah come to a stop at a ledge overlooking the homestead. Indeed, the lights are on. Sounds of a fiddle playing are heard from inside. "Okay... let's head down there." He continues as the three continue down the ledge as quietly as possible, still on their horses. They eventually make it down to the level of the homestead, and spot a hitching post. "Let's hitch up here." Dutch prolonges as the three arrive at the hitching post. They dismount their horses and continue on foot towards the house.

"Let me do the talking, we don't wanna scare these folks." Dutch says.

"Someone's having fun in there." Micah responses.

"You two, get yourself out of sight. One lonely man is a lot less intimidating than three nasty-looking degenerates. Micah, hide behind that wagon. Arthur, you take that old shed on the left. And stay low, both of you." Dutch orders the two men. Once both in their positions, Dutch approaches the house and stops at the front door.

"Hello?" Dutch says to the ones inside the house.

"Shut up, Billy. Shh, shh, shh!" The voice is heard from inside.

"Excuse me? Hello?" Dutch continues.

And after being notified of Dutch's presence, a man exits the house and stands on the front porch.

"Oh well, hello friend." Dutch says politely.

"What you want?" Man asks.

"I am very sorry to disturb you." Dutch answers. "Uh, my friends and I, well we got into, some... trouble up the way. Lost in the storm."

A few more men exit the house, some through the side door and some through the front.

"Ah, gentlemen." Dutch says.

"We can't help you. mister." One of the men responses.

"I got folks... dying on the trail." Dutch responses dryly.

The men do not believe Dutch's story and laugh at his attempt. While they are doing so, Micah discovers something where he is hiding.

"Arthur... Arthur, we got a problem." Micah wispers to Arthur as he lifts the sheet off the wagon that he is hiding behind, which reveals a corpse inside of it. "There's a corpse right here. Arthur... There's a body in the wagon."

"Yeah, I hear you, just... keep your eyes on Dutch." Arthur responses as the focus their attention back on Dutch.

"Now, I, I just need some, cans of food, or something. Gentlemen... please." Dutch continues to bargain.

"I think you should go now, buddy." One of the men responses.

"Now, friend... I ain't asking for much. Please, I am... kinda desperate." Dutch responses politely.

"Hey, I don't believe it. Come here, partner. Come here!" One of men shouts to others seeing Dutch approachng closer. "It's goddamn Dutch van der Linde, you morons! Colm is going to shit his pants! Put your hands up!"

At this point, Micah takes out their revolver and shoots one of the says, which starts a bloody shootout at the homestead. The three menshoot all of the men inhabiting the house. After the shootout, the three regroup.

"Goddamn O'Driscoll boys here! Why?" Dutch proclaims suprisingly.

"I don't know, maybe same reason as us." Micah responses.

"Micah, go bring the horses closer to the house. Arthur, let's go search the cabin." Dutch orders.

Micah goes over to their hitched horses in order to bring them closer to the homestead. Meanwhile, Dutch and Arthur are going to search the now presumably empty cabin to search for supplies for their own homestead. They eventually enter and find no one in there. Afterwards, they commence their search.

"Smells like a party in here." Arthur says.

"Turn the place upside down, grab as many supplies as you can. We need the essentials. Food, medicine... whiskey." Dutch orders.

"I'm starving." Arthur proclaims.

"You should eat something now." Dutch responses. "Get your strength up for the ride back.." After searching a little bit more, he continues. "O'Driscolls! I don't believe it."

"It's a strange one alright." Arthur responses. "Maybe they're hiding up here too. There's a big price on Colm O'Driscoll's head, nearly as big as the one on yours."

"Wanting Colm dead is about the only thing me and Uncle Sam agree on." Dutch responses dryly.

"Place is dry, and warm, we cold maybe move the women and Jack down here." Arthur offers.

"Maybe." Dutch responses. "We'll see how they are when we get back. I don't really want us to split up." He leaves the cabin after he finishes his search. "Keep searching while I pack these on the horses. Meet me out here when you're done."

Arthur eventually finishes his search of the cabin for supplies, and heads back outside with Dutch and Micah.

"Micah, Arthur, keep looking for stuff. Arthur, go see if there's anything in that barn." Dutch gives another order, pointing Arthur to the barn, in which he heads towards to look for anything. "Micah, you search the cabin, see what we missed."

Micah goes to the cabin on Dutch's orders. After a bit of a walk, Arthur reaches the barn and opens the door. He walks in and all seems normal at first, until he gets ambushed by an O'Driscoll that was hiding in the barn during the shootout. He falls onto him in an attempt to capture him.

"You bastards shot my cousin!" The O'Driscoll says.

"Well, he started it!" Arthur responses dryly.

"I'm gonna break your neck!" The O'Driscoll proclaims as they they both eventually rise to their feet, and begin a brawl. Soon afterwards, Arthur is in the middle of the brawl when Dutch arrives and observes what is going on.

"What's going on?" Dutch coming inside.

"This guy just jumped me." Arthur responses.

"Oh, did he now?" Dutch says observing the brawl from the side.

Arthur eventually wins the brawl and the O'Driscoll falls to his feet while Arthur still stands.

"Sneaky little bastard... should I kill him?" Arthur asks Dutch.

"No, not yet." Dutch says steadly. "Find out what they're doing here, and where Colm is."

"Oh, this son of a bitch'll talk..." Arthur says to Dutch. "Where's Colm O'Driscoll?" Arthur asks the O'Driscoll threatingly.

"With the others... at an old mining camp southwest of here, near the lake." The O'Driscoll answers.

"What are you bastards doing? Why are you up here?"Arthur continues.

"We're fixing to rob some train, gonna blow the tracks. I don't know more than that, I swear!" The O'Driscoll pleadingly.

"Well, I would say it looks like you have this, Arthur." Dutch says with a laugh. "Do what you want with him, I don't care. But bring that horse when you're done." Dutch leaves the barn.

As the O'Driscoll pleads, Arthur chokes the O'Driscoll and then collects his hat and gun. Arthur calms the horse and takes it out of the barn.

"Is that bastard still in there?" Dutch asks.

"He's dealt with." Arthur responses.

"Good." Dutch says as notices the horse. "That looks like a decent horse, you should keep him." Dutch continues as they approach the horse. "You need to hitch him, he's already skittish."

"Get away from me!" A woman herd screaming in the house.

"Micah, what the hell do you think you're doing?" Dutch asks as he and Arthur enter the house and see Micah chasing the woman.

"Oh, look what I found in the cellar! Wild thing, ain't ya?!" Micah responses.

The woman grabs a bottle of the dining table and throws a bottle at Micah.

"Leave her alone!" Dutch orders to Micah.

"I wasn't doing nothing." Micah proclaims. "She's one of them O'Driscolls."

The woman grabs a knife of the table and wields it at Micah.

"No, she ain't, Micah. Look at her." Dutch says, until turning to woman. "Miss, miss, are you..."

Micah flips the table and a lantern falls and a fire is seen starting.

"Oh, you fool! Micah!" Dutch shouts as he pushes Micah trying to approach the woman away from her and Arthur pushes Micah aside. Dutch then tries to calm down the woman. "Miss, now it is gonna be okay. We mean you no harm." Dutch says calmly. "Miss! Miss...Come on, it'll be okay."

Dutch is able to calm her down and notices the fire spreading in the house. "We need to get out of here, and quick. Come on now." Dutch and others exit the burning house. "You okay, miss?"

"They came three days ago... and my husband, they..." Woman says shakingly.

"Okay, miss. You are safe now...and you can't stay here." Dutch responses reasuringly. Arthur, Dutch, and the woman witness the housing being engulfed by the fire.

"You come with us." Dutch still trying to reasure the woman. "Arthur." He says handing Arthur a lantern. Dutch mounts his horse and Arthur guides the woman to Dutch's horse.

"Miss, it's okay, alright?" Arthur says. "We're bad men, but... we ain't them, so...it's okay." He then hands over the lantern to Dutch and helps the woman get on Dutch's horse. "Get on. We'll keep you safe until you figure out... what you wanna do."

"What's your name, Miss? Miss?" Dutch asks as he and the others leave the area.

"Adler." A woman respones.

"Adler?" Dutch asks for confirmation.

"Sadie Adler." A woman continues. "Mrs... I... he....he was my husband."

Behind them, house being consumed by the fire and Sadie's husband, who seen in the cart. Arthur and others arrive back to camp.

"Hey, somebody's coming!" Lenny shouts to the other gang members, hearing someone approaching, readiyng his Carbine Repeater and see that it is Dutch.

"Looks like it's Dutch." Lenny shouts to the others in the cabin. "Hey everybody, Dutch is back." Lenny warns as the gang members are seen exiting one of the cabins.

"How'd you get on?" Hosea asks Dutch.

"Micah found a homestead, but... we weren't the first." Dutch responses. "Colm O'Driscoll and his scum, they beat us to it." He then hand his lantern to Lenny and Hosea helps Sadie off Dutch's horse. The others gather around. "We found some of them there...but there is more about apparently...scouting a train." Lenny takes the lead rope to Dutch's horse as he dismounting his horse. "Thank you." He says to Lenny.

"That's the last thing we need right now, Dutch." Hosea says.

"Well, it is what it is...but we found some supplies, some blankets...a little bit of food...and this poor soul, Mrs. Adler." Dutch responses. "Miss Tilly, Miss Karen, would you warm her up...give her a drink of something. (to Sadie) And Mrs. Adler, it's gonna be okay...you're safe now." Dutch orders to others. "They turned her into a widow...animals. I need some rest. I haven't slept in three days."

"You're over here...Miss O'Shea will show you the way." Susan says to Dutch, pointing to one of the cabins. "Mr. Morgan, we put you in a room over here." Susan continues, pointing to another one of the cabins.|

"Thank you, Miss Grimshaw." Arthur respones.

"Mr. Bell, you're with the fellers over there." Susan says to Micah, pointing to other building where the other will be staying.

"How come Arthur gets a room...and I get a bunk bed next to Bill Williamson...and a bunch of darkies?" Micah asks surprised and annoyed.

"Get yourself to bed." Hosea says to Micah, as the watch Arthur follows Susan into one of the cabins and shuts the door.
