Charles' Point Of View
Through the heavy, tinted glass of the study, I watched the tail lights of that little Prius flicker and disappear down the winding drive. Idiots. Absolute, bottom-tier, delusional idiots. The audacity of their proposal still rang in my ears, a discordant note that refused to fade. I released a breath I hadn't realized I was holding, the sound rattling in the quiet, oppressive grandeur of the room.
My chest felt tight, constricted by something I couldn't quite name… anger, perhaps, or the remnants of disbelief. The silence that followed felt heavier than before, weighted with the absurdity of what had just transpired.
"They really think they can just trade someone in their place," I muttered, shaking my head in disbelief. The crystal tumbler on my desk caught the lamplight, throwing fractured patterns across the wall like broken promises. "Like we're at a flea market swapping out tarnished silver for gold. So incredibly stupid."
