The countdown to the study trip had hegun,
Forms were being signed, lists pinned to the board, excitement buzzing through the halls .
For Christopher, it felt like noise around a calm center---too much movement for thoughts he hadn't yet named.
Ethan walked beside him after class ,unusually quiet.
"You good ?" Christopher asked.
Ethan nodded. "Yeah .just ...thinking. "
Leo followed a step behind. Watching the way sofee crossed the corridor toward them with intention written all over her face.
"Christopher ! " She Called ,bright smile ready.
"I heard we're in the same group for the trip."
Christopher looked genuinely surprised. "Oh okay. "
Sofee took that as encouragement and stayed close ,talking fast---about schedules, rooms ,late -night study plans.
She laughed too often.
Touched his arm once .lightly, as if testing how much space she took take.
Christopher didn't pull away.
But he didn't lean in either.
Across the hall ,Zia saw everything,
Jason stood beside her,arms crossed
"You're quiet again. " he said .
"Is this about the trip ?
Zia hesitated. "It's just ....a lot .'
Jason's tone softened, but his grip tightened slightly around her wrist.
"People expect things from us,Zia ,Don't forget that."
She nodded, because that was easier than explaining.
Later ,in the library, Christopher found Zia alone at a corner table.
The seat Across from her was empty.
He paused .
Then sat .
No greeting.
No explanation.
Just shared space.
Zia turned a page, then spoke quietly.
"Are you excited for the trip ?"
"I don't know ," he said honestly. "Feels like everyone wants something from it."
She smiled." Yeah same."
Their eyes met for a second too long.
Not enough to be dangerous.
Enough to be noticed.
From between the shelves, Leo saw them .
His chest tightened---not just jealousy alone ,but fear.
Things were changing and Christopher was standing of it .unaware.
That evening, at home, Christopher's father called him into study.
"You'll represent the school well ." His father said.
"Don't let distractions interfere. "
Christopher nodded, jaw set.
"I won't. "
But as he lift the room,he wondered---
Since when had silence become a distraction?
Back in her room,Zia stared at her packed bag for the trip.
Jason's messages sat unopened.
Sofee's laughter echoed in her memory.
And Christopher 's quiet presence lingered the longest.
Attention was a strange thing.
Some people demanded it.
Some people attracted it without trying.
And some---
We're slowly drowning in it.
