Chapter 21 - Chapter-21 : Choosing a Side

Jason didn't take space well.

He took it personally.

By morning ,the shift was visible---

not in what he said ,but in what he allowed others to say.

When Zia walked into school, conversations dipped.

Eyes followed.

Judgments sharpened.

Jason stood with his friends near the senior wing, calm ,composed, watching everything like it was already under control.

Sofee stepped into the moment smoothly.

"You okay ?" She asked Zia in front of others, voice loud enough to carry.

"You've been ....distant lately. People worry."

Zia looked at her steadily ." Do they ?"

Sofee smiled. "I do."

The smile didn't reach her eyes.

Across the hall ,Christopher saw it---

the setup,the softness hiding intent.

He walked over.

"She's fine ," Christopher said calmly.

"No one asked for a diagnosis. "

The air shifted.

Sofee blinked, surprised."I was just being nice."

Christopher met her gaze." Then be honest too."

Jason stepped forward.

"Careful," he said lightly. "You're crossing lines."

Christopher didn't back away.

"I didn't draw them ."

That was the moment.

People noticed.

Later,Leo found Christopher by the lockers.

"You just picked a side ," Leo said quietly.

Christopher nodded. "I think I did a while ago. I just stopped hiding it."

Zia watched from a distance, heart racing---not with fear, but relief.

For once,she wasn't standing alone.

That afternoon, Jason confronted her directly.

"You embarrassed me,"He said .

Zia didn't flinch."You tried to control me."

Jason scoffed. "I Protected you."

"No ," She replied Softly. "You owned me."

The silence that followed was final.

That evening, Christopher sat with Ethan and Leo on the steps again.

"You good ?"Ethan asked.

Christopher exhaled. "I don't know what happens next."

Leo smiled faintly. "Neither do I. But at least now it's honest. "

Across town,Zia stared at her phone---

Jason's messages unread, Sofee's apology unsent.

For the first time, she didn't feel torn.

Choosing a side hadn't cost her herself.

It had brought her closer to it.
