Chapter 50 – Shadows in the Hall.
Lila's apartment had never felt so quiet. The usual hum of the city outside seemed to have died, leaving only the soft echo of her own footsteps. She paused at the kitchen doorway, sensing something shift, though nothing met her eyes. It was impossible to describe, this prickling awareness crawling along her skin, as if someone—or something—was moving just beyond her vision.
Her phone buzzed, and she jumped, heart hammering. A message popped up from an unknown number: "You shouldn't be alone right now." Her fingers trembled as she tried to reply, but no words came. The room felt smaller, the walls pressing in. Shadows stretched across the corners, unnaturally long, and she could swear one of them moved on its own.
Marcus had called earlier, his voice warm and casual, trying to pull her into mundane talk, but she hadn't been able to focus. Even Ethan's brief text, teasing about dinner plans, failed to cut through the unease. Lila felt isolated, as if someone had peeled her world away, leaving her suspended in silence.
A flashback struck her suddenly—last year, a similar feeling, one she had brushed off as anxiety. But this was different. This was intentional. Calculated. The presence was there, watching, testing. Lila's mind raced, weaving possibilities: a stalker? A jealous ex? Or something deeper, more dangerous. She shivered.
The lights flickered once, twice, and then the apartment was plunged into momentary darkness. She froze, gripping the edge of the counter. The shadows seemed to pulse, stretching toward her in a way that felt almost alive. Then, as quickly as it came, the lights returned. Her phone buzzed again—another message: "You can't hide."
Lila sank onto the floor, pressing her back against the wall. Questions tumbled through her mind, urgent and chaotic: Who was this? Why her? And why now, when everything else in her life was already a fragile balance? She had to find answers—but stepping outside the apartment now felt like walking into the jaws of the unknown.
And somewhere, just beyond her perception, the presence smiled.
Cliffhanger: The unknown number sent one last message: "I'm closer than you think."
