Dusk fell early in the snowy week that followed the first containment session. The academy grounds were already dark by late afternoon. Violet braziers along the paths threw long, wavering shadows across the snow. The VonHoff villa stood apart as always. Isolated and luxurious. Its black stone walls blended into the gathering night.
Victor had spent the day in the library. Reviewing forbidden texts on dual-affinity resonance under Thalor's grudging supervision. Seraphina attended her Raven lectures with mechanical precision. Agnes remained at the villa. Preparing for the evening, fresh silk sheets, warmed oils and shadow restraints already coiled at the bedposts like patient serpents.
No one expected trouble at the gates, but it came in the form of Aiden, though he was not alone.
He did not approach yet, instead he waited in the shadow of the eastern wall. Breath fogging in the cold. Flanked by two Blade cadets. Tall and broad-shouldered. Swords sheathed but hands resting on hilts. One was a scarred third-year named Kael Thorn. Known for his brutal sparring record. The other, a lean woman with cropped red hair called Mara Vex. Fast, precise and rumoured to have ice-affinity of her own. Both wore the crossed-blade insignia of House Blade. Both had been hand-picked by Aiden after days of quiet conversations in the training yards.
They had come for Seraphina.
Aiden's hazel eyes were hard, as a storm of emotions churned inside him, anger at the Shadow heir's arrogance, betrayal at the way Seraphina had slipped from the proud ice princess he admired into something broken and bound, deep concern that twisted into nausea every time he pictured the marks on her throat. He had watched her in the dining hall that day. Sitting beside VonHoff. Posture perfect but cheeks flushed.
The way she shifted every few minutes as though something inside her tormented her. The high collar could not fully hide the faint purple bloom at her throat. The rumors had grown louder with whispers of late-night absences. Of a Raven prodigy seen leaving the Shadow heir's villa at dawn.
He would end it tonight. Rescue her from whatever dark web VonHoff had spun. And if it meant drawing steel, so be it.
After making up his mind, Aiden stepped forward.
"VonHoff!" he called. Voice carrying across the snow. "Come out. We need to speak."
Silence answered. Then the gates creaked open of their own accord.
Victor emerged alone.
He wore no coat despite the cold. Black tunic open at the collar. Silver hair loose. Hands loose at his sides. Behind him the villa doors remained closed. No servants. No Agnes. No Seraphina.
He stopped three paces inside the gate. Expression calm. Almost bored.
"You have an audience," Victor said. "Speak."
Aiden's hand tightened on his sword hilt. His pulse thundered in his ears, a mix of fury and fear for her safety fueling every word.
"Where is Lady Veyl?"
"Inside. Resting."
Kael Thorn stepped forward. Hand on pommel.
"She's not resting," he growled, voice rough with barely contained aggression. "She's being held. We've heard the stories of the marks on her throat. Release her, now."
Victor's gaze flicked to the two Blade cadets, assessing. Then back to Aiden.
"She is not a prisoner," he said quietly. "She is mine by choice."
Aiden's laugh was short, and bitter. A sharp pang of betrayal stabbed through him, how could she choose this? How could the woman he had seen as unbreakable bend to such darkness?
"Choice under influence is no choice," he shot back, voice rising with frustration. "Whatever hold you have on her, break it. Or we break it for her."
Victor tilted his head slightly.
"You believe you can force me."
Mara Vex drew her sword. Slowly, Ice crystals formed along the blade. Thin and sharp.
"We believe we can try," she said, her tone cool and measured, eyes locked on Victor like a predator sizing up prey.
Aiden raised a hand. Stopping her advance.
"One chance, VonHoff," he said, his voice steady despite the turmoil inside, hope flickering that Seraphina would see reason, that this could end without blood. "Call her out here. Let her speak for herself. If she says she wants to leave and walks away with us then this ends peacefully. If she doesn't…" His voice hardened, resolve steeling against the growing doubt. "We take her by force."
Victor studied them for a long moment.
Then he turned slightly toward the villa.
"Seraphina."
The doors opened.
Seraphina stepped out slowly. Wrapped in a long black cloak over her Raven uniform. Her platinum hair was loose. Catching the brazier light. Her glacial-blue eyes were wide but steady. She walked to Victor's side. Close enough that their arms brushed. And stopped.
Aiden exhaled sharply. Relief warring with dread. His heart twisted, seeing her so close to VonHoff, so composed yet fragile, only deepened the ache of betrayal.
"Seraphina," he said. Voice softer now. Pleading. "Come with us. Whatever he's done to you we can undo it. The professors, the wards. There are ways. You don't have to stay here."
Seraphina's gaze flicked to Aiden. Then to the two-armed cadets. Then back to Victor.
She did not move.
Victor's hand settled lightly on her lower back. Thumb stroking once.
"Speak," he said quietly.
Seraphina swallowed.
"I am not leaving."
Aiden's face went pale. Horror surged through him, cold and sickening, how could this be her? The proud Raven he had admired, reduced to this echo of herself.
"You don't mean that," he whispered, voice cracking with desperation. "He's twisted your mind—"
"I mean it," she interrupted. Voice cracking only slightly. "I chose this, I begged for this and I belong to him now."
Frost bloomed beneath her feet. Thin and delicate. Then melted into the snow.
Kael Thorn drew his sword fully. Steel ringing.
"You're not yourself—"
Victor's voice cut through, dangerously.
"Draw steel on my property, and you will not leave this courtyard."
Shadows peeled from the ground at his feet. Coiling upward like living vines. Thick, black and pulsing with violet light.
Mara Vex raised her ice-blade, ready to end this.
Aiden stepped between them with his hands out.
"Stand down," he snapped at his allies, anger flaring at their impulsiveness. Then, to Victor: "This isn't over. The professors will hear of this. Professor Thalor, the headmistress. If she's under coercion—"
Seraphina laughed.
"She knows," she said. "Professor Thalor knows everything. And she has not stopped it."
Aiden stared at her. Horror dawning fully now, twisting into a deep, aching resolve, he had failed her once by not acting sooner, but he would not fail again.
"You're proud of this?" he asked, voice thick with disbelief and pain.
Seraphina's chin lifted.
"I am his."
Victor's shadows tightened. Forming a loose barrier between them and the gates.
"Leave," he said. "While you still can."
Aiden's fists clenched.
"This will reach the council," he vowed, voice steady despite the storm inside—anger, heartbreak, determination all fusing into unbreakable purpose. "And when it does—"
Victor smiled, coldly
"When it does… we will be ready."
Aiden held his gaze for a long moment. Then turned.
"Come on," he said to Kael and Mara. "We're done here. For now."
They retreated. Swords sheathed but tension thick in the air.
The gates closed behind them with a clang.
Seraphina exhaled, shaking.
Victor turned her to face him. Cupped her chin.
"You did well," he said quietly.
Tears froze on her lashes. Then melted.
"I almost faltered."
"But you did not."
He kissed her, deeply. Right there in the open courtyard.
When he pulled back, she was trembling. But not from cold.
"Inside," he said. "Agnes is waiting."
They walked back to the villa. Hand in hand. Snow falling thicker around them.
Agnes met them at the doors. Curtsying.
"Master, Mistress."
Seraphina stepped forward. Into Agnes's arms. Burying her face in the silver-haired maid's shoulder.
Agnes held her, gently.
"You were perfect, Mistress," she whispered. "Come. Let us prepare you for the Master's reward."
Victor closed the doors behind them.
The gates stood silent.
But the night was far from over.
And Aiden's threat still hung in the air. Like a blade yet to fall.
