Kaelen had always known how to use space.
She remembered that about him now, watching him circle the way he controlled distance the way a card player controlled the table, never letting you feel the geometry shift until you were already inside it. Four years of her life were spent beside him and she'd never once recognized it for what it was. She'd called it confidence. She'd called it presence.
She understood now that it was simply the practiced movement of someone who had always been working an angle.
"You're stalling," he said. Not accusatory. Almost pleasant.
"I'm deciding."
"That's the same thing."
