She was at the edge of the camp when she heard him come up behind her.
Not heard exactly. The bond told her before her ears did, the specific quality of him moving toward her in the dark, the warmth and the direction of it together. She had been standing at the edge of the campsite looking south for about twenty minutes. She had not been able to sleep. She was not going to pretend she had been sleeping if he asked.
He came to stand beside her.
He did not ask why she was awake. He knew from the bond. She knew he knew.
The camp was asleep behind them. Cael had set the night watch and two of his unit were on the perimeter and everyone else was down.
The fire was low, the kind of low that gave warmth without much light. Past the edge of the camp the borderlands dark was complete.
South of them, two hours' walk away, were the Silver Hollow ruins.
She had been looking at the dark where they were.
"Tomorrow," she said.
"Yes," he said.
