Caitlyn stared at Jinx, then turned a look of profound betrayal toward Vi. "Your sister is Powder? She's the one who turned the Hexgates into a graveyard?"
Vi pivoted, her hands out, desperate to keep the world from fracturing. "Caitlyn, listen to me. It's complicated. We can talk about this, just let me—"
But inside Jinx's mind, the talk was already over.
The inner void was no longer silent. Jinx walked through the wreckage of Powder's consciousness, her footsteps heavy. "See? I told you. Vi doesn't care about you. She only has eyes for her pretty Little Cupcake."
"Vi even brought the Enforcers to finish the job," the voice hissed. "Do you still think she loves you? Or are you finally ready to wake up?"
Powder shook her head, her fragile grip on reality slipping like sand. The image of Caitlyn's face—twisted into a demonic mask by her own trauma—looped endlessly in her mind.
Jinx leaned in close, blowing a stray strand of blue hair out of Powder's eyes. She pouted with mock sympathy. "Nowhere left to run, little sister. You're backed into a corner, and the only person who can save you... is me."
"Get out of my head!" Powder screamed, her voice cracking. "What do you want from me?!"
Jinx tilted her head, her violet eyes wide and innocent. "Don't be like that. I am you. We're the same person, remember? And you know exactly what we have to do."
In that moment, the two voices merged into one chilling resolve: "I'm done running."
As their minds fused, the "Jinx" persona took the wheel with a violent jerk. Her eyes snapped open, glowing with a manic, electric light. She hoisted Pow-Pow, the barrels already beginning to hum with lethal intent.
"This is a trap!" Jinx shrieked, her voice a jagged blade of erratic fury. "Are you playing games with me, Vi?!"
"Powder, please! Just listen—"
"SHUT UP!" Jinx roared. She wasn't just talking to Vi. The ghosts of Mylo and Claggor were screaming in her ears, their voices a static white noise of accusation. "I don't want to hear it! Not from you, and not from the dead guys!"
Caitlyn blinked, her rifle still lowered. "We didn't say anything..."
Jinx adjusted her aim, the Gatling gun's barrels spinning faster. "I wasn't talking to you, Cupcake!"
Vi took a daring step forward, her heart in her throat. "Powder, it's okay. We can fix this!"
"STOP! CALLING! ME! THAT!" Jinx's scream was primal. "Powder is dead! She drowned in the tea! My name is Jinx!"
Vi kept moving, her voice a soft, desperate plea. "You're not a jinx. I shouldn't have said those things back then. I was wrong..."
"Don't talk to me like I'm a kid!" Jinx leveled the gun at her sister's head. "Did you come back for me? Or did you come back for your new Enforcer girlfriend?"
"I came for you, Powder! Only you!" Vi lunged forward, ignoring the spinning barrels. "If you want to shoot, then shoot. But I'm not leaving you again. Never again."
Vi reached out, her hand trembling as she went to caress Jinx's cheek. For a heartbeat, the chaos slowed. But then, the sound of a crow's caw broke the silence, followed by the heavy, rhythmic thud of Enforcer boots.
"Move, move, move!" "Surround them! Don't let the suspect escape!"
Dozens of Enforcers swarmed the rooftop, their rifles leveled. Jinx looked at Vi, then at Caitlyn, and finally at the circle of blue coats. The betrayal was complete.
"I knew it," Jinx whispered, her voice hollow. "A trap. You're all in on it."
"Bao—" Vi started, but it was too late.
RAT-TAT-TAT-TAT-TAT!
Jinx unleashed a hailstorm of lead, the Gatling gun bucking in her hands as she mowed down the front line of Enforcers. Caitlyn grabbed Vi, hauling her behind a stone chimney just as the rooftop turned into a kill zone.
"Return fire! Take her down!" Marcus roared from behind cover. He leaned out and fired his sidearm.
The bullet clipped Jinx's arm. She staggered, a sharp cry of pain escaping her lips, but she didn't stop. She swung the barrels toward Marcus, shredding the masonry he was hiding behind. But with her movement hindered, the other Enforcers found their mark.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Jinx coughed, a spray of crimson hitting the stone floor. Her vision began to blur, the world tilting as she slumped to her knees. In her final moment of consciousness, she saw Vi. But Vi was still being held by Caitlyn.
Her lips moved, a final, desperate breath forming a single word: "Liar."
As Jinx hit the ground, Vi let out a scream of pure agony. She broke away from Caitlyn, scrambling across the rooftop toward her fallen sister. But before she could reach her, a bola-chain hissed through the air, wrapping around Vi's ankles and slamming her face-first into the stone.
"Powder... Powder..." Vi sobbed, crawling forward, her fingers inches away from Jinx's hand.
One centimeter. That was all she needed. But a heavy baton descended, striking Vi across the back of the head. Her world went black, her hand falling limp just short of her sister's fingers.
Marcus stood over them, his face a mask of cold authority. "Suspects apprehended. Get the medics up here."
Caitlyn rushed over, her face pale with horror. "Marcus! What the hell are you doing?! They're just—"
"I'm doing my job, Miss Kiramman," Marcus snapped. "You should try it sometime."
Just then, a neon-green streak of light lanced through the rain. Chen slammed into the center of the rooftop on his hoverboard, his expression a mixture of cold fury and desperation. He ignored the rifles pointed at him and threw himself over Jinx's body, shielding her from the Enforcers.
"Back off!" Chen roared, his hand reaching for the streetlamp on his back. "Touch her again and I'll burn this whole Academy to the ground!"
