The air in the narrow alley smelled of grease and victory. Chen, despite his "mummy" bandages, sat with the others around a familiar, rickety table. Vi was already elbow-deep in a plate of Crimson Raptor meat, her face shining with oil and exhaustion.
"So," Vi managed between bites, "is Silco actually dead? Or did he just get a very expensive sky-ride to the afterlife?"
She was the one who had spent the most time in a cell because of him. She wanted closure. Chen took a bite of a raptor leg and shook his head—he'd seen the explosion, but in the world of League, a "missing in action" status was rarely a permanent death.
Jinx, however, was in a much better mood. She imitated Chen's bite, her eyes wide and pleading. "I hit him! I saw the boom! Praise me, praise me!"
Vi laughed, giving her sister a greasy thumbs-up. Caitlyn, despite her noble upbringing, was eating with a quiet intensity, though far more elegantly than Vi.
"Dead or not, he's out of the picture for now," Caitlyn said, dabbing her mouth with a handkerchief. "I've already ordered a total suspension of shipping with Bilgewater until we get an official response from their port authority. I have a city to reorganize." She turned to Vi, her gaze softening. "I'm going to need you by my side for this, Vi."
Vi smirked, feigning a groan. "Eh, I didn't want to be a 'Cupcake' lackey, but since you're practically begging... I guess I can't say no."
Caitlyn then looked at Chen and the blue-haired girl. "What about you two? Join the Enforcers. We could use your—"
"Not doing it!" Jinx chirped before Caitlyn could finish. "Powder says she's not a cop!"
Heimerdinger looked crestfallen at the prospect of his two star students leaving. "Chen, Powder! Think of the Academy! The airplanes, the long-range radio—we're on the cusp of a technological revolution!"
"Professor," Chen said, standing up. "Pure science is a beautiful thing, but Piltover is ready for the next step. You need to embrace Hextech. Don't just focus on the physics of the past. Explore the truth of how science can control magic. That is the new frontier."
Heimerdinger looked at Chen, stunned. "This is... a far cry from the boy who just wanted a stable lab and a quiet life."
"The world changed, Professor," Chen said, looking at Jayce. "If you can synthesize Hex Crystals, you'll change the balance of power forever. But I have to go back. Zaun is dying, and it needs more than a doctor—it needs a revolution."
Chen turned to Jayce. "I hope the next time we meet, they call you Councilor Talis." He then whispered to Camille, "And I hope you find your way to the Ferros seat."
Camille gave a faint, enigmatic smile but said nothing.
Finally, Chen knelt before Seraphine. "Did the song help?"
The young girl nodded, her eyes bright.
"Go with Jayce," Chen instructed. "He'll build you a device to help you filter those voices. One day, everyone will hear your song."
Chen stepped onto his hoverboard, but Jinx didn't reach for hers. Instead, she leaped onto his back, wrapping her arms around his neck. "I'm tired! Carry me back!"
"You have your own board! It's literally right there!"
"I don't care!"
"You're heavy, Powder! And you're carrying a Gatling gun and a rocket launcher!"
"Are you calling me fat?!"
"I'm calling your arsenal heavy!"
Chen sighed, defeated, and began the long trek down the elevator toward the Undercity with Jinx on his back. As they descended, the air grew thick and acidic. Jinx eventually fell asleep against his shoulder, her manic energy replaced by the quiet breathing of the girl she used to be.
By the time they reached the lower levels, she woke up, stretching her arms. "Are we home yet?"
"Almost," Chen wheezed. "You really need to learn how to walk."
Powder jumped down, her expression suddenly turning serious as she looked around. "Chen... look. Why are all the shops closed?"
They were in Chem-Baron Finn's territory, but the usual bustle of the black markets was gone. The streets were eerily silent. Chen frowned, scanning the shadows. He finally spotted a lone Zaunite scuttling between buildings.
"Hey! What's happening? Where is everyone?" Chen asked, sliding a few coins across.
The man looked at Chen's hoverboard and the "Jinx" tattoos. "For Janna's sake, I'll talk. Everyone's gone to the Sump-Snipper Prison. There's a massive break-out happening. Lady Voce is dead, and Baron Finn has pulled every enforcer he has to try and hold the line."
"Finn is losing control," the man whispered. "The prisoner... he's something else. Everyone's hiding."
"What's his name?" Chen asked, his blood turning cold.
"Ur... Ur-something?"
"Urgot?" Chen asked.
"Yeah! That's it. Urgot." The man didn't wait around; he scurried off into the fog.
Chen stood in the middle of the empty street, the realization hitting him like a physical blow. In the lore, Urgot didn't just break out—he transformed the prison into his own fortress of pain.
"Zaun's first revolutionary," Chen muttered, gripping his streetlamp. "He's finally here."
