Chapter 13 - Chapter 13: The First Pawn Offers Itself

The liaison hall's guest chamber was quiet except for the occasional chime of a protective array and the distant murmur of night patrols.

Lin Xuan sat cross-legged on the simple meditation mat, back straight, breathing so shallow it barely stirred the air. Inside his aperture, the Thunderheart Gu perched motionless, violet sparks occasionally dancing across its wings like distant lightning on a calm sea. The Golden Cicada—now rank 2—rested beside it, wings folded, quietly accelerating the flow of time within a tiny bubble around several mid-grade spirit stones. They crumbled to powder at triple speed, essence funneled directly into his qi sea.

Rank two peak approached—not in days, but in hours.

He opened his eyes.

A soft knock.

"Enter," he said, voice low and polite.

The door slid open. A young woman in pale green robes stepped inside—seventeen or eighteen years old, rank three initial stage, Clear Heart Pavilion outer disciple badge pinned to her collar. Her face was delicate, eyes bright with a mixture of caution and curiosity.

"Senior Brother Lin Xuan?" she asked, using the respectful address despite the vast gap in apparent status. "Elder Mei sent me. My name is Su Qing. I'm to… keep watch and assist you tonight."

Lin Xuan inclined his head slightly.

"Many thanks, Junior Sister Su. The Alliance's hospitality is appreciated."

She hesitated at the threshold.

"May I… ask you something?"

"You may."

She stepped fully inside; the door closed behind her.

"The memories in the jade slip… they're terrifying. That demon really killed a rank-five elder with time gu?"

Lin Xuan allowed a trace of weariness to color his expression—perfectly measured.

"He did. And he enjoyed it. Not the killing itself… but the efficiency. Every death was another resource. Another step."

Su Qing shivered despite the warded warmth of the room.

"Then why did he let you escape?"

Lin Xuan met her gaze—black eyes calm, bottomless.

"He didn't. I was simply… beneath his notice. A rank-two ant crawling away from a dragon's footprint. Why waste qi on something that cannot threaten you?"

She swallowed.

"But now the Alliance is mobilizing. Three great sects are sending investigation teams into Blackcloud tomorrow. They'll hunt him down."

Lin Xuan nodded slowly.

"They will try."

A pause.

Su Qing took one step closer—hesitant, almost conspiratorial.

"Senior Brother… I've read the ancient records. Time-path cultivators are rare. And dangerous. If he really has a mature time gu… even rank-six elders might fall."

She bit her lip.

"I'm afraid."

Lin Xuan regarded her for several heartbeats.

Then he spoke—voice soft, almost gentle.

"Fear is rational. Only fools feel no fear."

He rose smoothly.

"But fear can also be… useful."

Su Qing blinked.

"Useful?"

Lin Xuan stepped toward her—slow, non-threatening.

"You are young. Talented. Protected by Clear Heart Pavilion. Yet tonight you volunteered to watch over a low-rank survivor who claims to have seen a demon. Why?"

She flushed faintly.

"I… I wanted to hear the story directly. And… maybe help. If there's anything I can do."

Lin Xuan stopped one pace away.

His voice dropped lower.

"There is something you can do."

Her eyes widened slightly.

"Anything."

He raised his right hand—palm open.

A thin golden thread emerged from his fingertip—barely visible, delicate as spider silk.

Golden Cicada Gu. Time Acceleration (target).

Su Qing stared at the thread, mesmerized.

"What… is that?"

"An opportunity," Lin Xuan said quietly. "A very small one. If you trust me, I can accelerate your cultivation for a short time. Push you past bottlenecks. Give you a chance to survive what is coming."

Her breathing quickened.

"But… that's forbidden. Time-path—"

"Is forbidden only because the righteous fear what they cannot control." His tone remained even. "I am no demon. I am only a survivor… offering help to another survivor."

Su Qing hesitated—only for a moment.

Then she extended her hand.

"Do it."

The golden thread touched her wrist.

Time around her accelerated.

Her qi circulation sped up threefold. Bottlenecks in her meridians loosened like knots under heat. Essence from the room's ambient qi rushed into her body.

Minutes passed.

To her—it felt like hours of intense cultivation.

Her aura climbed.

Rank three middle stage.

Then peak.

Then—crack.

Rank four initial stage.

She gasped, staggering backward.

Eyes wide with disbelief… and exhilaration.

"I… I broke through. Two minor realms… and half a major realm… in minutes."

Lin Xuan withdrew the thread.

The backlash hit him—meridians burning, vision blurring for three breaths. He hid it perfectly.

"You now have strength," he said. "Use it wisely."

Su Qing looked at him with something close to worship.

"Senior Brother… how can I ever repay—"

Lin Xuan raised a finger to his lips.

"Repay me by living. And by remembering one thing."

She leaned in instinctively.

He spoke so softly only she could hear.

"When the righteous sects march into Blackcloud tomorrow… do not go with them."

Her brow furrowed.

"Why?"

"Because the demon will be waiting."

He paused.

"And because… I intend to be there when they die."

Su Qing froze.

Her eyes searched his—looking for the frightened survivor she thought she had met.

She found only calm, endless black.

And understanding crashed over her like cold water.

"You…" she whispered.

Lin Xuan did not deny it.

He simply smiled—thin, polite, utterly without warmth.

"Now you have a choice, Junior Sister Su."

He stepped back.

"Raise the alarm… and die tonight."

"Or stay silent… help me leave the city unseen… and live long enough to become something more than a pawn."

Su Qing's hands trembled.

But she did not scream.

After a long silence she spoke—voice barely audible.

"…What do you need?"

Lin Xuan inclined his head—same respectful gesture he had shown Elder Mei.

"A quiet exit through the pavilion's rear teleport array. And one more thing."

He extended his hand again.

"Swear a blood oath. Your silence… for my protection when the time comes."

Su Qing stared at the offered palm.

Then—slowly—she pricked her finger.

Blood dripped.

The oath formed—crimson sigil floating between them.

She pressed her palm to his.

The sigil sank into both their flesh.

Binding.

Irrevocable.

Lin Xuan nodded once.

"Wise choice."

He turned toward the window.

"Prepare. We leave in two hours—before the morning conclave begins."

Su Qing watched his back—heart pounding.

She had just bound her fate to a demon.

And yet… some part of her felt more alive than ever before.

Outside, the bells of Azure City tolled midnight.

The righteous slept soundly.

The demon prepared to walk among them once more.

To be continued...
