Chapter 276 - Chapter 276: Still here

The moment the sound changed—

Leah moved.

Fast.

Like her body reacted before her mind could catch up.

She turned back toward the operating table, stumbling slightly as she rushed forward.

"…Izana."

Her voice cracked on his name.

She reached him immediately, hands going straight to his.

Cold.

Still—

but not gone.

Not anymore.

Her fingers tightened around his like she was afraid he would slip away again.

"…Say that again."

Her voice shook.

"…Please."

Izana didn't answer.

Not properly.

But his fingers moved.

A faint twitch.

Weak.

Barely there.

Leah froze for a second.

Then exhaled sharply like she hadn't been breathing at all.

"…You're here."

Her voice dropped lower.

"…You came back."

Behind her—

the room snapped back into motion.

"…We've got a pulse—."

"Reconnect monitoring—now."

"Careful—don't overload him."

Hands rushed in again.

Machines flickered back to life.

The flat silence was gone.

Replaced with urgency.

But this time—

it wasn't final.

It was different.

Hopeful.

Dante stepped into the room with Elias right behind him.

Both silent.

Both watching.

Leah didn't move away from Izana.

Not even when the staff approached.

A nurse gently tried to guide her back.

"…Ma'am, we need space—."

Leah shook her head instantly.

"…No."

Firm.

Low.

Not loud—but final.

The nurse hesitated.

"…You need to step outside for a moment—."

Leah's grip tightened on Izana's hand.

"…I said no."

Dante spoke then.

Calm.

Controlled.

"…Let her stay."

The nurse paused.

Looked at the surgeon.

He nodded once.

"…She can stay. Carefully."

Leah didn't thank them.

Didn't even look up.

Her attention stayed locked on Izana.

On every small movement.

On every breath.

On the fact that he was still there.

Still there.

Her hand moved slightly to his chest.

Feeling.

Measuring.

"…You're not allowed to do that again."

Her voice was quiet now.

Broken in a different way.

"…Do you understand me?"

No answer.

But his fingers tightened again.

Just slightly.

Leah inhaled sharply.

"…There you are."

She leaned closer.

Her forehead almost touched his again.

"…Don't disappear."

A pause.

Her voice softened.

"…I can't do that again."

Silence filled the space between them.

Only machines now.

Only life returning in fragments.

Izana's eyes fluttered.

Barely open.

Unfocused.

His gaze shifted slightly.

Searching.

And then—

it found her.

Leah's breath caught instantly.

"…Iz?"

His lips parted slightly.

Nothing came at first.

Just breath.

Weak.

Then—

"…Li…"

One word.

Barely audible.

Leah's eyes widened.

Her grip on his hand tightened instantly.

"…Yes."

Her voice broke.

"…I'm here."

His eyes didn't stay open long.

But they stayed long enough to see her.

That was enough.

Leah leaned closer again.

Her voice trembling now.

"…You're not allowed to scare me like that."

A pause.

Her throat tightened.

"…They said you were gone."

Silence.

Izana didn't respond immediately.

Only his fingers moved again.

Weak.

But real.

Leah closed her eyes for a second.

"…Don't do that again."

Her voice dropped.

"…Please."

Behind them—

Dante exhaled slowly.

Not relief exactly.

But something close.

Elias remained still.

Watching.

Quiet.

The surgeon spoke again.

"…We're stabilizing him. He's responding."

Leah didn't turn.

"…Good."

Her hand never left Izana's.

Not once.

A few minutes passed.

The room settled into a new rhythm.

Less chaos.

More control.

Machines steadying.

Breaths stabilizing.

Izana still weak—but present.

Leah stayed beside him the entire time.

Not sitting.

Not leaving.

Just there.

Holding on like letting go wasn't an option anymore.

Her fingers brushed his knuckles gently.

"…I thought I lost you."

Her voice was softer now.

Not breaking.

Just tired.

Izana didn't respond immediately.

His eyes barely opened again.

But when they did—

they found her again.

Leah leaned closer instantly.

"…Don't talk."

A pause.

Then softer—

"…Just stay."

His fingers tightened faintly around hers.

That was all.

Time passed again.

Slow.

Measured.

The room no longer felt like death.

Just survival.

Leah's hand moved slightly to her stomach.

A reflex.

Protective.

Her voice softened.

"…Zarek is here."

That name shifted something in the air.

Izana's fingers twitched again.

Leah noticed immediately.

Her eyes lifted.

"…You heard that?"

A pause.

Izana's lips moved slightly.

No sound came at first.

Then—

barely:

"…Zarek…"

Leah exhaled shakily.

A tear slipped down her cheek before she could stop it.

"…Yes."

Her voice cracked.

"…Your son."

Silence.

But his hand tightened faintly around hers.

Just once.

Clear.

Intentional.

Leah nodded slowly.

"…He's strong."

A pause.

Her voice softened further.

"…Like you."

Izana didn't answer.

But he didn't let go either.

That mattered more.

Dante stepped slightly closer now.

Low voice.

"…He's stabilizing well."

Elias added calmly.

"…He'll recover."

Leah didn't look at them.

Just nodded faintly.

"…He has to."

A pause.

"…He promised."

No one corrected her.

Because in that moment—

it didn't matter what he had been.

Only what he still was.

A team of medical staff entered again after a while.

"…We're moving him to recovery."

Leah looked up immediately.

"…Where?"

The surgeon answered gently.

"…A private hospital room in the medical corridor. He needs constant monitoring."

Leah stood instantly.

"…I'm going with him."

There was no hesitation.

No question.

A nurse opened her mouth—

then stopped when Dante spoke.

"…Let her."

Elias didn't argue either.

"…She stays close."

The staff exchanged looks.

Then nodded.

"…Alright. Carefully."

The hallway felt longer than it was.

Too bright.

Too clean.

Too real.

Izana was moved on the stretcher, machines attached, monitors beeping steadily now.

Not strong.

But steady.

Leah walked beside him the entire way.

Her hand never left his.

Not even when they had to adjust equipment.

Not even when the corridor turned.

"…Iz."

She said his name softly once.

Then again.

Like repetition might keep him here.

"…Iz."

No response.

But his fingers twitched faintly once when she said it.

She noticed immediately.

"…I felt that."

Her voice softened.

"…I know you're listening."

Dante walked slightly behind them.

Elias ahead.

Both silent.

Both watching everything.

The hospital room was large but quiet.

Private.

Too white.

Too still.

They transferred him carefully onto the bed.

Monitors were reattached.

Machines resumed their quiet rhythm.

Beep.

Beep.

Beep.

Stable.

Leah didn't let go even when they tried to reposition him.

"…Just a second."

Her voice was firm.

But soft.

The nurse hesitated.

Then stepped back.

Izana lay still again.

But not like before.

Not gone.

Just exhausted.

Leah finally sat beside him.

Her hand still holding his.

Her other hand brushed his hair back gently.

"…You scared me."

A pause.

Her voice lowered.

"…Don't do that again."

Silence.

Then—

barely—

his fingers moved again.

Leah exhaled shakily.

"…Good."

Hours blurred together.

Staff came in and out.

Adjustments.

Checks.

Quiet updates.

Leah never left.

Not once.

Dante eventually leaned against the far wall.

Elias stepped out briefly.

But Leah stayed.

Always stayed.

At one point, she leaned closer again.

Her voice soft.

"…Zarek is waiting for you."

A pause.

"…We both are."

Izana didn't speak.

But his hand tightened faintly again.

And Leah smiled through the tears she hadn't realized were still falling.

"…That's enough for now."

She pressed her forehead gently to his hand.

"…Just rest."

A pause.

Then quieter—

"…I'm right here."

And this time—

the beeping machines didn't feel like silence.

They felt like something else.

Like proof.
