Lyra's POV
"And what makes you think I'd believe you actually helped me?" The words flew out of my mouth like venom. I folded my arms tightly across my chest, creating a barrier between us.
Ash's boot remained wedged firmly in my doorway. His enormous frame blocked any hope of escape, leaving me trapped between his intimidating presence and the wall behind me. Since ignoring him wasn't an option, I decided to provoke him instead. Maybe if I pushed his buttons hard enough, he'd lose his temper and disappear into the night again, finally letting me get some damn sleep.
"I wasn't about to let some brain-dead fool bleed out on my doorstep," Ash replied, his tone as frigid as winter ice.
"Well, surprise," I shot back. "I'm still breathing and very much alive, so if you could kindly move your—"
