Chapter 17 - Ranma & Akane marriage part- 2

Chapter 2: What the Heart Refuses to Say

The hospital smelled of antiseptic and silence.

Ukyo stood at the entrance of the ward, fingers clenched around the strap of her bag. Ranma stayed half a step behind her, eyes scanning the unfamiliar space with visible discomfort. Hospitals weren't places he liked—too many memories of helplessness, too many moments where strength meant nothing.

"This way," Ukyo said softly.

They walked down the corridor together.

Ranma noticed how tense she was—the stiffness in her shoulders, the way her breath kept hitching. He didn't tease her. Didn't joke. He simply stayed close.

Inside the room, Ukyo's father lay on the bed, thinner than Ranma remembered, skin pale but eyes sharp. When he noticed them, a faint smile appeared.

"Ukyo," he said weakly. "You came."

She rushed forward. "Of course I did, Dad."

His gaze shifted past her—then locked onto Ranma.

"So you came too," he murmured. "Good lad."

Ranma bowed slightly out of habit. "Yes, sir."

Ukyo's father studied them together, his smile deepening. "Seeing you both like this… it puts my heart at ease."

Ukyo swallowed, not correcting him.

Ranma felt the weight of the misunderstanding settle on his shoulders like a burden he didn't know how to put down.

---

Across the street, Akane watched the hospital entrance from a small café window.

She hadn't planned this part.

Hadn't planned to feel this… hollow.

She stirred her untouched drink, eyes fixed on the building. Every minute that passed felt heavier than the last.

"This is stupid," she muttered. "I said I wouldn't interfere."

But her feet hadn't listened.

When she saw Ranma through the glass doors earlier—standing beside Ukyo, serious and gentle—it felt like a confirmation of every fear she'd tried to bury.

Still, she stayed.

Not to confront.

Not to accuse.

Just to understand.

---

Ranma stepped out of the room an hour later, needing air.

He leaned against the wall, exhaling slowly.

"You okay?" Ukyo asked, joining him.

"Yeah," he said. "Just… hospitals aren't my thing."

She nodded. "Thanks for coming with me."

Ranma glanced away. "You didn't have to thank me."

Ukyo hesitated. Then she said, "Ranma… my dad thinks we're—"

"I know," he interrupted quietly.

She stiffened. "Does it bother you?"

Ranma thought of Akane.

Of the way she smiled that morning.

Of the way she said of course when he told her not to come.

"It's not that," he replied. "I just don't want anyone getting the wrong idea."

Ukyo studied his face closely.

"…You're thinking about Akane."

Ranma didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

Ukyo smiled—not sad, not bitter. Just understanding. "You really don't realize it, do you?"

"Realize what?"

"That you already chose her."

Ranma frowned. "That's not—"

Ukyo raised a hand. "Relax. I'm not asking for anything."

She leaned back against the wall. "I asked you to come because I needed someone I trust. Not because I expected something else."

Ranma exhaled, relieved. "Thanks."

Ukyo chuckled softly. "You're an idiot, you know that?"

He huffed. "Yeah. I hear that a lot."

---

That night, Akane sat alone on a park bench near the hospital.

The lights flickered above her, insects buzzing softly in the darkness.

She hugged her knees to her chest.

"I don't belong here," she whispered.

She thought of turning back more than once.

But then she imagined Ranma laughing with Ukyo.

Standing by her side.

Being needed.

And the pain returned.

Akane pressed a hand against her chest.

"When did this happen?" she asked herself. "When did he become this important?"

Footsteps approached.

Akane froze.

Ranma stopped a few feet away, surprise clear on his face.

"…Akane?"

Her heart dropped.

"Y-You weren't supposed to see me," she blurted.

He stared at her. "You followed us?"

"I didn't mean to!" she said quickly. "I just—"

She stopped.

Because suddenly, all the excuses felt pointless.

Ranma's expression softened. "Why?"

Akane looked away. "I was worried."

"About Ukyo's dad?"

"…About you."

Silence stretched between them.

Ranma rubbed the back of his neck. "You should've said something."

"You told me not to come," she replied quietly.

He winced. "That was stupid. I didn't mean it like that."

"Then how did you mean it?" she asked, finally meeting his eyes.

Ranma opened his mouth.

Closed it.

He didn't have an answer.

Not one he could say out loud.

Akane stood. "I shouldn't be here. I know that."

She turned away.

Ranma grabbed her wrist instinctively.

"Akane—wait."

She froze.

"I don't want you to misunderstand," he said. "There's nothing going on between me and Ukyo."

"I know," she replied softly.

That hurt more than denial.

"Then why does it still hurt?" she asked, voice barely audible.

Ranma's grip loosened.

Because he had no answer that wouldn't change everything.

"I'm sorry," he said instead.

Akane nodded once. "Me too."

She pulled her hand free and walked away before either of them could say something irreversible.

Ranma watched her disappear into the darkness.

And for the first time, the truth settled in his chest with terrifying clarity.

He didn't want to lose her.

---

Back in the hospital room, Ukyo looked up as Ranma returned.

"You found her," she said.

Ranma didn't deny it.

Ukyo sighed. "You should stop running."

He stared at the floor. "I don't know how to say it."

Ukyo smiled gently. "Then learn. Before it's too late."

---

That night, Akane lay awake in a small rented room, staring at the ceiling just like the night before.

But this time, something had changed.

The fear was still there.

The uncertainty too.

But now, there was something else.

Hope.

And that scared her more than anything.
