Chapter 1 - Chapter 1 — The Night Everything Began

The city never slept.

Even at midnight, the streets were alive with neon lights, car horns, and the quiet desperation of people trying to survive another day.

Lila Hart stood outside a café, staring at the "HELP WANTED" sign taped to the glass door.

Her hands tightened around the strap of her worn bag.

"Please," she whispered under her breath. "Let this one work."

This was the sixth job interview this week.

Tuition was due soon.

Her mother was already working double shifts at the hospital.

And Noah—her younger brother—was pretending not to notice how worried she was.

Lila pushed the door open.

A bell chimed softly.

The café smelled like coffee and cinnamon.

Behind the counter, a bored-looking manager glanced up.

"Application?"

Lila nodded quickly.

"Yes, sir. I can work evenings, weekends—any time, actually."

The man barely looked at her resume before sighing.

"We already filled the position."

Her heart dropped.

"Oh."

She forced a smile.

"Thank you anyway."

Lila stepped back outside into the cold night air.

Another rejection.

Another dead end.

She looked up at the sky, blinking quickly.

"Don't cry," she muttered. "Not in public."

Her phone buzzed.

It was a message from her mother.

Did the interview go well?

Lila hesitated.

Then she typed back.

"Yes. Still waiting for their response."

A small lie.

But she couldn't add more stress to her mother.

She started walking down the street, her mind spinning with worries.

She wasn't looking where she was going.

And suddenly—

Crash.

Her shoulder slammed into someone.

The impact knocked the breath from her lungs.

Papers scattered across the sidewalk.

"Oh my Gosh— I'm so sorry!"

Lila crouched down quickly to pick them up.

But when she looked up—

She froze.

Standing in front of her was a tall man in a dark coat.

Sharp jawline. Cold gray eyes. And the unmistakable aura of someone who did not belong in this chaotic street.

He looked expensive. Dangerously expensive.

His gaze fell to the coffee now staining his shirt.

Silence stretched between them.

Then he spoke.

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

"You just spilled coffee on a shirt worth more than your phone."

Lila blinked.

Then her embarrassment turned into irritation.

"Well maybe you should watch where you're walking too."

One of his eyebrows lifted slightly.

"Interesting."

She stood up, brushing dust off her jeans.

"Look, I said sorry. What else do you want?"

For a moment, he simply studied her. Like she was some strange creature he hadn't seen before.

Then—

A faint smirk touched his lips.

"Your name."

Lila frowned.

"…Why?"

"Because," he said quietly,

"I have a feeling this won't be the last time we meet."

At that exact moment—

Across the street—

A building that had not been there before flickered into existence.

Its golden sign glowed softly in the darkness.

THE MIDNIGHT LIBRARY

And neither of them noticed it.

Yet.
