Chapter 7 - CHAPTER 7: SHADOWS OF THE MIND

Mia followed Alex into the unknown, into the stairwell of the maintenance door. As they descended, the air grew thick with tension. They were heading deeper into the building, away from the garage and the danger lurking there

Alex led Mia down the stairs, his footsteps echoing off the concrete walls. Ethan and Lucas brought up the rear, their eyes scanning the shadows.

They reached a door at the bottom, Alex keying in another code. The door swung open, revealing a dimly lit corridor.

"This way," Alex said, his voice low.

Mia followed, her heart still racing from the garage showdown. Where were they going? And what did Project Eclipse have to do with her?

They moved swiftly, the corridor opening up to a small, high-tech room. Screens flickered, data streaming across the displays.

Ethan nodded, his eyes on the screens. "We're safe here. For now."

Mia's eyes locked onto Alex's. "Tell me what's going on. Now."

Alex's expression turned serious. "Project Eclipse is bigger than we thought, Mia. And you're right in the middle of it."

Mia's eyes locked onto Alex's, her mind racing. "What do you mean, I'm in the middle of it?"

Alex's expression was grim. "You stumbled onto something at Ryder Innovations, Mia. Something that could bring down the entire project."

Ethan nodded, his eyes on the screens. "We think you were meant to find it. You're the only one who can stop it."

Lucas leaned forward, his voice low. "But that means you're a target, Mia. We need to keep you safe."

Mia's thoughts were spinning. Stop Project Eclipse? She was just a data analyst, not a hero.

Alex's voice cut through her thoughts. "We need to dig deeper, find out what you're connected to. Ethan, can you get into the Ryder Innovations database?"

Ethan nodded, his fingers flying across the keyboard. The screens flickered, data streaming by.

Suddenly, one screen froze, a file icon blinking. "Got it," Ethan said, his voice triumphant.

Alex's eyes locked onto Mia's. "This is it, Mia. This is the file you were meant to find."

What was in that file? Mia asked internally.

Ethan's fingers moved, the file unfolding on the screen. Text and images blurred together, but one phrase jumped out at Mia: "Subject 13".

A shiver ran down her spine. "What does that mean?"

Alex's expression was grim. "We think it's a code name. For someone involved in Project Eclipse."

Lucas leaned in, his eyes scanning the file. "Look at this."

Mia followed his finger, her eyes widening as she saw her own name, buried in the text.

"Mia Griffin," she whispered. "I'm Subject 13?"

The room fell silent, the only sound the hum of the computers.

The room was heavy with tension, the air thick with unspoken questions. Mia's mind was reeling - what did it mean, Subject 13?

Alex's voice was low, gentle. "Mia, we need to talk about this."

Ethan nodded, his eyes locked onto hers. "We think you're connected to Project Eclipse, Mia. Maybe more than we realized."

Lucas's expression was intense. "We need to dig deeper, find out what this means."

Mia's thoughts were racing. What did they know? What didn't they know?

Suddenly, a screen flickered, a new image appearing. A photo of a young girl, maybe 10 years old. Mia's eyes narrowed - she looked familiar.

"Who's that?" Mia asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Ethan's expression turned grim. "That's you, Mia. From 15 years ago."

Mia's world spun. What did it mean? With that, she fell into a heavy slumber.

Mia's eyes fluttered open, adjusting to the dim light of the safe house. She was sprawled on a worn couch, a blanket tangled around her legs. Ethan sat opposite her, his gaze intent on hers.

"Coffee?" he asked, his voice low and rough.

Mia nodded, her throat dry. As Ethan handed her a steaming mug, their fingers brushed, sending sparks dancing up her arm.

She took a sip, the rich flavor exploding on her tongue. "How did you know I take it black?"

Ethan's smile was a whisper. "I've known you, Mia. I remember."

The air thickened, heavy with unspoken tension. Mia's pulse thrumbled, her skin tingling with anticipation.

Ethan leaned forward, his eyes locked onto hers. "I've wanted to tell you, Mia. For years."

Mia's heart skipped, her voice barely above a whisper. "Tell me what?"

Ethan's gaze burned, his words a caress. "That I've never stopped thinking about you. That every moment without you has been a tease, a promise of what could've been."

Mia's breath caught, her lips parting. Ethan's eyes dropped to her mouth, his voice a growl. "I've wanted to kiss you since college, Mia. Since the night we almost..."

Mia's mind flashed back, the memory searing. They'd been alone, laughing, the air electric. And they'd almost...

Ethan's hand cupped her cheek, his thumb tracing her lip. "Tell me to stop, Mia. Tell me to walk away."

Mia's heart thundered, her body swaying towards him. "Don't stop," she whispered.

Ethan's lips crashed onto hers, the kiss fierce, hungry. Mia's world narrowed, her senses consumed by him.

The coffee mug slipped, shattering on the floor. Ethan's arms wrapped around her, lifting her onto his lap.

Their lips parted, gasping for air. Ethan's eyes blazed, his voice raw. "I've waited too long for this, Mia."

Mia's fingers tangled in his hair, pulling him back to her. "Don't make me wait any longer."

The room melted away, leaving only Ethan's lips, his touch, his whispered promises.

Their lips met again, the kiss deeper, more urgent. Ethan's hands roamed Mia's body, leaving trails of fire in their wake. She was lost in him, drowning in the sensations.

The couch creaked, the blanket pooling on the floor. Ethan's lips trailed down her neck, his teeth grazing her skin. Mia's back arched, a soft moan escaping her lips.

Suddenly, a phone buzzed, the sound jarring. Ethan's head snapped up, his eyes glazed. "Ignore it," he growled.

Mia's chest heaved, her voice barely above a whisper. "What if it's important?"

Ethan's jaw clenched, his eyes burning. "Nothing's more important than this."

The phone buzzed again, more insistently. Ethan cursed, reaching for his phone. "It's Alex," he muttered.

Mia's heart was still racing, her body thrumming. Ethan answered, his voice rough. "What?"

Alex's voice came through the phone, tinny but urgent. "Ethan, we have a problem. The team's compromised. We need to move, now."

Ethan's expression turned grim, his eyes locked onto Mia's. "Got it. We're on our way."

Mia's mind was spinning, her body still reeling.

After Alex's urgent call, Ethan and Mia left the safe house, the tension between them still palpable. They moved swiftly, joining Lucas and Alex in the high-tech room.

Alex's eyes locked onto Mia's. "We need to talk about Project Eclipse. And you, Mia."

Ethan's expression was grim. "We found something. A file. It mentioned you, Mia. Subject 13."

Mia's mind flashed back to the file they'd found earlier. "What does it mean?"

Lucas pulled up an image on the screen - a young girl, maybe 10 years old. Mia's eyes widened - it was her.

Ethan's voice was low. "That's you, Mia. From 15 years ago. We think Project Eclipse is connected to your past."

Mia's world spun. What did it mean?

Mia's eyes were fixed on the image of herself as a child, her mind racing. "What does this mean?" she repeated, her voice barely above a whisper.

Alex leaned forward, his expression intense. "We think Project Eclipse is a program, Mia. A program that started 15 years ago. With you."

Ethan's eyes locked onto hers. "You were part of a experiment, Mia. A experiment that went wrong."

Lucas's voice was grim. "The file mentioned a lab, Mia. A lab where they were testing something. And you were the test subject."

Mia's world was spinning. An experiment? A test subject? What had they done to her?

Suddenly, memories started flooding back. Flashes of a lab, of doctors in white coats, of pain and fear.

Memories crashed over Mia like waves - lab tests, injections, a girl screaming in the dark. Her breath caught. "What did they do to me?"

Ethan's face was tight. "We don't know yet, but we'll find out. You're safe now."

Alex nodded. "We need to get Mia out of here. Now. Project Eclipse won't stop until they silence her."

The team moved, packing up gear. Lucas tossed Ethan a bag. "Time to move."

Mia's eyes locked onto Ethan's. "What's happening to me?"

Ethan's voice was low, urgent. "We'll figure it out. Together."

They slipped into the night, shadows chasing them.
