Chapter 111 - Chapter 111: Return of the Caped Crusader

The heavy doors of Wayne Manor opened slowly, and the atmosphere inside felt unusually tense.

"Bruce!"

The moment he saw the man sitting inside, Dick Grayson couldn't stop himself from calling out, his voice filled with surprise—and something deeper. Relief. Concern. Maybe even guilt.

Sitting on the sofa was a man who looked less like a billionaire and more like a war veteran dragged straight out of a battlefield.

Bruce Wayne.

His upper body was bare, revealing a physique sculpted through years of relentless training. Every muscle told a story of discipline, but it was the scars that truly spoke. Countless scars—old, new, deep, shallow—covered his body like a living map of pain and survival.

Some wounds were still fresh.

A few were no older than three days.

One gash near his ribs was still faintly bleeding, staining the newly wrapped bandages.

Standing beside him, Alfred Pennyworth worked silently, carefully applying antiseptic and wrapping clean bandages around Bruce's injuries. His movements were precise, practiced, and gentle—like someone who had done this far too many times.

On the floor beside the sofa lay a pile of discarded bandages, soaked in dark, drying blood.

Alfred's face showed calm professionalism, but his eyes betrayed him. There was worry there. Deep, unspoken worry. And perhaps frustration.

He wanted to speak. To scold. To beg Bruce to stop.

But he didn't.

He never did.

Dick walked closer, his eyes scanning Bruce's condition.

"When did you get back?" he asked, his tone soft but tense. "You look like you went through hell. These injuries… are you even okay?"

Bruce didn't answer immediately.

For a moment, there was only silence—the quiet sound of Alfred finishing the last wrap of bandage.

Dick clenched his fists slightly before continuing.

"Bruce… you've been fighting alongside gods. Leading them, even. I know how dangerous that is. But still… you're human."

His voice grew heavier.

"You need to rest. Just for a few days at least—"

"Dick."

Bruce's voice cut through the room.

Calm. Flat. Emotionless.

Dick froze.

Alfred paused as well.

Bruce slowly lifted his gaze, his eyes sharp and piercing, like they could see through everything.

"Alfred told me something interesting," Bruce said evenly. "A criminal has appeared in Gotham recently. Calls himself… Kaito Kid."

Dick's expression stiffened instantly.

"And," Bruce continued, his tone unchanged, "you've failed to catch him. Every time."

Silence fell again.

This time, it was heavier.

Dick exhaled slowly, a bitter smile forming on his face.

"I knew this was coming," he admitted quietly.

He nodded.

"Yeah. It's true."

He met Bruce's gaze.

"Kaito Kid is… different. Every time I get close—really close—to figuring him out… I end up walking straight into his trap instead."

Bruce leaned slightly forward.

"Then answer me this."

His voice remained calm—but the pressure behind it increased.

"In the months he's been active… what have you learned?"

Dick said nothing.

"What's his real name?"

"…I don't know."

"His age?"

"…No idea."

"His motive?"

"…Still unclear."

"Appearance? Personality? Where he lives? Possible suspects?"

Each question hit harder than the last.

Dick's silence became his answer.

Bruce's eyes narrowed.

"Then tell me, Dick," he said, his voice growing colder, sharper, "what exactly have you been doing?"

The air in the room turned heavy.

"Do you know how many crimes happen every single night in Gotham?" Bruce continued. "Do you know how many people are suffering while you waste time chasing a thief who treats crime like a stage performance?"

Dick's fists tightened.

"When I left, I trusted you. I believed you could protect this city."

Bruce's voice dropped.

"And now you're telling me… you can't even catch one thief?"

His gaze hardened.

"You've even allowed him to become a symbol. A celebrity."

"Is that your accomplishment?"

"Master Bruce!"

Alfred finally spoke, his voice firm but respectful.

"That's enough."

He stepped slightly forward.

"Master Richard has done more for this city than you realize."

Bruce didn't look at him.

Alfred continued.

"And there's something else you should know. Since this Kaito Kid appeared… Gotham's overall crime rate has actually decreased."

That finally made Bruce react.

He turned his head slightly.

"What are you suggesting?" Bruce asked, disbelief clear in his tone. "That a criminal is improving Gotham?"

Alfred didn't hesitate.

"I'm saying the situation is more complicated than it appears."

Bruce's eyes darkened.

"I'd rather believe that's the GCPD finally doing their job."

"Kaito Kid is not simple!"

Dick suddenly spoke, his voice rising.

Something inside him snapped.

Bruce's words hadn't broken him—but they had ignited something.

Determination.

Frustration.

Defiance.

Dick stepped forward, his eyes locked onto Bruce.

"You haven't faced him. You don't know what he's capable of."

He took a breath and continued.

"He's a master of disguise. Not just good—perfect. He can change his voice without equipment, switch identities in seconds, and blend into a crowd like he was never there."

Bruce remained silent.

Dick pressed on.

"He uses specialized gadgets—cards fired like bullets, smoke bombs, flash grenades. Everything non-lethal, but incredibly effective."

"And his plans…" Dick shook his head slightly. "They're flawless. Every move calculated. Every escape route prepared."

He looked directly at Bruce.

"His disguises are so good… they rival Clayface."

That statement lingered in the air.

Even Alfred looked surprised.

"I tracked him," Dick continued. "Went through surveillance footage across the entire city."

"At first, I could follow him."

"But every time—every single time—I'd lose him halfway."

Dick's voice grew more intense.

"He deliberately moves through blind spots. Crowded areas. Places where cameras don't help."

"And then—he disappears."

"Because he doesn't just disguise himself once."

"He changes multiple times."

"In seconds."

Dick clenched his jaw.

"By the time I identify one disguise… he's already someone else."

"And even when I chase that person…"

He let out a frustrated breath.

"It's never him."

The room fell silent again.

"He leaves nothing behind," Dick added. "No fingerprints. No DNA. No trace."

"Even the cape I recovered—completely clean."

"I found suspects. Real ones. I investigated them all—surveillance, wiretaps, even searches."

"Nothing."

"Every lead ends in a dead end."

Dick looked at Bruce, his expression serious.

"You see him as a thief."

"But I've seen what he's done to this city."

He paused.

"He hasn't killed anyone."

"He hasn't caused chaos or terror."

"And strangely… crime has gone down since he appeared."

Bruce's expression didn't change.

But he was listening.

"I believe he has good intentions," Dick said firmly.

"Yes—what he's doing is illegal. And yes, it might inspire others to imitate him."

"But that's exactly why I can't just treat him like any other criminal."

Dick's voice steadied.

"I don't just want to catch him."

"I want to understand him."

"And maybe…"

He hesitated for a brief moment.

"Bring him to our side."

That statement lingered heavily in the room.

Bruce stared at Dick for a long moment.

Then, finally, he spoke.

"Have you seen the reports about the 'Bat-Monster' in the Upper West Side?"

Dick blinked, slightly caught off guard.

"…Yeah. Barbara's been investigating it."

Bruce stood up slowly.

"Barbara was attacked last night."

The words hit like a punch.

"She's in Gotham General Hospital."

Dick's eyes widened.

"What—?!"

Bruce turned away, his back facing Dick.

"While you were chasing Kaito Kid… she was fighting that thing alone."

Silence.

Heavy. Crushing silence.

Dick couldn't respond.

For the first time, doubt crept into his expression.

Bruce began walking toward the exit.

"Come to the Batcave tonight," he said without turning back.

His voice was cold again.

Controlled.

Final.

"From now on… you follow orders."

The door opened.

Then closed.

Leaving behind only silence.

Alfred stood quietly.

Dick remained frozen in place.

His mind replayed Bruce's words again and again.

Barbara… injured.

The Bat-Monster…

Kaito Kid…

Everything collided in his thoughts.

Outside, the sky above Gotham darkened.

A storm was coming.

And this time—

It wasn't just about a thief anymore.

Something far more dangerous had entered the game.
