Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Spider Monster

Sitting in front of the computer, Peter waited with a serious expression for someone to reply to him.

To avoid exposing himself or looking like a lunatic, Peter made up a story that he was searching for inspiration for a novel he was writing.

Outstanding Explorer: I have a question for everyone. If a person is bitten by the spider from the Spider-Man movies, what would they become?

Patch121: If you're bitten by a spider, of course you become Spider-Man.

Outstanding Explorer: Is it possible for other changes to happen?

Patch121: The world of novels is fictional anyway, so you can make it up however you want. But I've read plenty of novels where someone transmigrates into the Spider-Man world, and basically they all turn into Spider-Man. If you're writing it, just follow that routine.

Peter asked a few more questions, but Patch121 loved lecturing others and only went on and on about why it should be written that way, giving reasons why beginners should write wish-fulfillment stories. It left Peter feeling helpless.

Sky of 91: The original poster is asking what someone could turn into. Obviously, he doesn't want the protagonist to become Spider-Man.

Outstanding Explorer: From a rational analysis, what would actually happen if someone were bitten by the spider in Spider-Man?

Peter thought it over carefully before asking this question.

So Close Yet So Far: I happen to work in a related field. From the people I've encountered at work, most people bitten by spiders are basically fine. Treat the wound, and in more serious cases, an IV drip will do. But if it's a particularly venomous spider and you don't deal with it immediately, it's basically either death or severe injury.

This made Peter uneasy. He suddenly felt that letting a spider bite him was far too risky.

After all, quite a few people in this world have died from spider venom.

Staring at the screen for a moment, Peter began typing again.

Outstanding Explorer: The spider in the movie is an experimental subject made from multiple spiders. It should be quite venomous. If someone were bitten, would they die?

So Close Yet So Far: Even if they don't die, they wouldn't be far from it.

"Not far from death," Peter repeated softly. Then he shook his head. He did not feel like he was anywhere near death. On the contrary, he felt that his body was growing stronger and stronger.

Sky of 91: Come on, you're asking how to write a novel, not how to deal with spiders.

Sky of 91: Damn it. If you don't want the protagonist to become Spider-Man, just let him turn into something else.

Outstanding Explorer: Into what?

Sky of 91: How would I know? Maybe into a spider monster? Hahaha. Spider-Man gets protagonist treatment in the movies. We're not protagonists. Being a spider monster isn't so bad either.

Spider-Man. Spider monster.

Protagonist treatment.

Just these few lines made Peter think for a long, long time. His face suddenly turned ashen.

Throughout the entire movie, no one ever said that being bitten by a mutated spider would definitely turn you into Spider-Man.

There was only one Spider-Man, Peter Parker. If any random person in that world were bitten by the spider, would they gain Spider-Man's powers?

This was very likely just an accident, a case of protagonist plot armor.

If an ordinary person like himself were bitten, surviving would already be a blessing in disguise. To hope for a mutation with no side effects like Peter Parker's was simply wishful thinking.

Thinking of this, Peter could not help but touch the fangs filling his mouth and let out a bitter laugh.

Just as he was baring his teeth and sighing, pain suddenly contorted his face. He dropped to his knees, his whole body trembling as a piercing pain spread outward from his spine.

"Damn it, again."

Today was the third day since he transmigrated into the Spider-Man world. Starting yesterday, Peter's body had begun experiencing periodic bouts of pain. This pain was no ordinary discomfort. When it struck, it was practically life-ending.

Ugh!

Peter spat a mouthful of sour liquid into the trash can. The intense pain had triggered spasms in his stomach.

Fortunately, this bout of pain ended in less than half an hour.

Peter stood up, his face pale. Recently, he had consulted a lot of material related to genetic mutations, and he agreed with what that netizen had said earlier. Being bitten by a highly venomous spider usually meant death or severe injury.

But Peter's situation was different.

He had not died.

He had mutated.

Just like Spider-Man in the movies.

Only Spider-Man's mutation was benign, whereas his own was not.

Peter pulled his fingers out of his pocket. Clearly human fingers now looked somewhat like an insect's tentacles.

In just three days, his fingers had grown noticeably longer. His fingernails had become thicker and were almost fused with the fingers themselves. Coupled with the constantly forming pustules on his back and the agony that made him wish for death at regular intervals, Peter did not believe his outcome would be a good one.

Even if he managed to cling to life for a while longer, Peter suspected he might not even be able to remain in human form. Perhaps, just as people online said, when an ordinary person is bitten by a mutated Spider-Man spider, the lucky ones die, and the unlucky ones turn into spider monsters.

In his mind, he could not help but picture a humanoid spider hunting residents in the dark corridors of an apartment building.

"No, that can't happen." Peter shook his head.

It was too terrifying. He could not bear to imagine himself becoming such a thing.

Gritting his teeth, he said, "The system has refreshed another sci-fi movie. No matter what, I have to give it a try this time."

The system was the key that allowed Peter to travel between movie worlds.

It was just that the worlds it generated were incredibly frustrating.

Many times, they were ordinary romance movies like Why the Boss Falls in Love with Me or Ex-Files. Aside from watching the male and female leads flaunt their affection, Peter had no options. After all, there were police in movie worlds too, and he could not just do whatever he wanted.

Moreover, he had tried it already. He could not bring anything back with him. Then, after finally getting a chance to enter the world of Spider-Man, this happened.

Now Peter felt that he absolutely had to go to another movie world. Given his current condition, he was almost beyond saving in the real world. Only in a movie world did he have a slim chance.

"Let's do it!"

Peter's gaze suddenly became incomparably resolute. He took out the set of items he had prepared earlier from the cabinet.

Slipping on his travel pack, he said without hesitation, "System, initiate transmigration."

He vanished on the spot. Only a line of text appeared on the unseen system panel.

"Transmigrating into Blade… Transmigration in progress…"
