Three Weeks After the Breakup
With scissors in hand, hair fell to the floor. A change began one strand at a time.
A shift, not just shorter hair. Out went the old look when I stepped into that shop and said make it brief. From shoulders down to near the earline now. Waves fall differently, softer somehow. Sure of myself in a way that doesn't echo last year's restless choices.
Her breath caught as her eyes landed on him. Oh my goodness, you appear .
"Different?"
"Fucking stunning. Like a whole new person."
"That's the idea."
Inside my place it sat quiet - this one room mine alone these days, not shared with Lucas anymore. One week gone since he packed up. His paintings off the walls. His shirts pulled from closets. The hum of him drained away completely. Walls stood open wide now. Waiting on what might come next.
"So," Ella said, sprawled on my couch.
"Three weeks single. How does it feel?"
"Weird. Good. Terrifying. Liberating. All of it."
