Chapter 9 - CHAPTER 9 — ECHOES OF THE OLD WORLD

Mando didn't sleep.

He sat on the edge of the bed, watching the weapon fade in and out of existence beside him like a restless thought. It responded to his emotions, now subtle, involuntary.

That frightened him more than the monsters.

MANDO (thought) What if one day I summon it… and can't make it leave?

The next morning, Kael took him somewhere new.

Not the warehouse.

Not the Outer Zone.

They descended beneath the city.

Ancient tunnels stretched wide beneath the steel foundations, walls carved from stone instead of concrete. Symbols lined the corridors, faded, worn, but deliberate.

MANDO These aren't modern.

Kael nodded.

KAEL No. They predate the weapon system.

Mando ran his fingers along the carved figures holding blades, bows, and spears. No guns. No summoning marks.

MANDO So people fought without weapons appearing from nothing?

KAEL They fought with what they built. What they earned.

He stopped at a massive sealed door.

KAEL This is where the world changed.

Kael pressed his palm to the stone.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then memory flooded the air.

Mando staggered as images forced themselves into his mind:

Cities burning without gunfire.Sky splitting open.People screaming as weapons fell from the air, not summoned, but imposed.

A voice echoed.

"POWER MUST BE EQUALIZED."

Mando gasped, collapsing to one knee.

MANDO What… was that?!

Kael's face was grim.

KAEL A fragment. The system doesn't just give weapons.

KAEL It remembers.

They left in silence.

On the surface, the city felt wrong, too loud, too artificial.

Mando finally spoke.

MANDO The system… it wasn't made to protect people, was it?

Kael stopped walking.

KAEL No.

A pause.

KAEL It was made to control survival.

Mando's chest tightened.

MANDO Then why do you train me?

Kael turned.

KAEL Because some people are born outside its rules.

His gaze sharpened.

KAEL Your father was one of them.

That night, Aysh stood on a rooftop overlooking the lower district.

Her target lay below an informant tied to weapon regulation.

She aimed.

Her bullet was perfect.

But at the last second… she diverted it.

The shot shattered a sign instead.

Alarms blared.

Her communicator buzzed instantly.

UNKNOWN: You hesitated.

Aysh vanished into the shadows, breath unsteady.

AYSH (thought) I can't keep doing this…

Deep in a sealed vault, chains rattled.

Something ancient stirred.

A name echoed through forbidden channels.

"The Devourer of Calibers has moved."

In a dark chamber far away, Kael froze.

KAEL (whisper)…No.

Mando stood on his balcony, staring at the sky.

His weapon formed behind him, silent, steady.

MANDO (thought) If this world is broken…

He clenched his fist.

MANDO (thought)…then maybe I wasn't born by accident.
