Chapter 78 - Matters of Battle

"Holy—this works too?!"

Peter was completely dumbfounded. That last match was practically Ahri herself incarnate.

First there was Indeedee, cruising up the ranks like it was eating and drinking water—pure brainpower domination.

Now there was Zorua, triggering Hero Resonance and charming the entire battlefield with a single Ahri pick.

One by one, every Pokémon under his command turned out to be an esports prodigy.

Is this for real? Am I secretly running a pro team?

Peter cracked a grin. Forget simulated battles for today—he decided to let all five Pokémon queue together and grind skill proficiency properly.

Two Hours Later…

[Ding! Lopunny used Hero 'Dharma' in Honor of Kings, landing Skill 3 True Word: Salvation on five enemies at once.

'Focus Punch' proficiency has advanced to Mastered!]

[Ding! Dolliv used Hero 'Angela', securing 20 kills with Skill 3 Scorching Light.

'Solar Beam' proficiency has advanced to Mastered!]

[Ding! Indeedee used Hero 'Cai Wenji', achieving MVP-level performance.

Sound-based skill proficiency greatly increased.

'Hyper Voice' proficiency has advanced to Proficient!]

[Ding! Slakoth used Hero 'Ukyo Tachibana', scoring 15 kills with Skill 1 Swallow Return.

'Aerial Ace' proficiency has advanced to Mastered!]

[Ding! Zorua used Hero 'Baili Shouyue', landing 10 blind snipes with Skill 2 Gale Breath.

'Detect' proficiency has advanced to Proficient!]

A cascade of system notifications rang out—today's training session officially concluded.

Thanks to Indeedee's psychic link, all five Pokémon communicated with absurd efficiency. Their win rate in ranked queues was terrifyingly high—most matches ended in fifteen-minute steamrolls.

Peter couldn't help but sigh in satisfaction.

"If this were my old world… I'd totally start an esports team with you guys. Championships would just rain down on us."

Letting that ridiculous thought drift by, Peter exited the Dreamscape.

The moment he stepped out, the door to the neighboring room opened as well.

A soft, sleepy figure emerged—Whitney, rubbing her eyes, her posture lazy and unguarded. She clearly hadn't fully woken up yet.

She didn't notice Peter at first. Instead, she stretched on the spot, raising her slender arms high, her figure arching naturally.

"Mm~…"

That half-awake murmur carried a uniquely soft sweetness. Peter's heartbeat instantly picked up.

This scene should be illegal…

His mind involuntarily supplied a line of poetry:

From the front, a mountain range—

from the side, a peak.

"Gulp."

Peter swallowed, desperately moistening his suddenly dry throat.

Some experiences, once lived… you could never truly go back.

Right now, he couldn't stop his thoughts from drifting back to those lingering, intimate moments.

"Hm? Peter~"

Whitney finally noticed him. Her rosy cheeks curved into a smile as she threw herself straight into his arms.

But she stepped a bit too hard—tugging at a tender spot.

"Ah—!"

She hissed, frowning as she sucked in a sharp breath, then lightly punched his chest, lips pouting.

"Jerk… that hurts…"

Peter wrapped an arm around her slim waist, smiling.

"Huh? That's weird. I remember you saying something completely different. You definitely said—"

Before he could finish, a small hand clamped over his mouth.

"Don't say it!" Whitney's face burned red. "Say it again and I'm really getting mad!"

Peter raised an eyebrow… then deliberately licked her palm.

"Ah!"

A jolt of numbness shot through her body. She softened instantly in his arms.

"Good girl," Peter whispered, breathing gently by her ear. "It's still early."

Whitney narrowed her eyes, pink pupils shimmering with emotion. She hesitated.

"B-But… I still really hurt…"

"It's fine," Peter murmured smoothly. "There are… other ways."

Without waiting for permission, he pulled her close and sealed her lips with his.

Click—BANG!

The door opened… then slammed shut again.

Evening – Pokémon Center Dining Hall

Night fell.

At a table in the Pokémon Center's restaurant, DJ Mary had already ordered all the dishes and was waiting impatiently.

Not long after, Peter appeared—supporting a limping Whitney as they came downstairs.

"Huh?" Mary blinked. "Whitney, did you hurt your leg?"

"Ah—n-no! It's nothing, haha…"

Whitney laughed awkwardly, shooting Peter a glare as a fresh blush bloomed on her face.

"As long as you're okay," Mary nodded, then frowned.

"But seriously, what were you two doing up there for so long? The food's almost cold."

"Ah? Uh—"

Whitney panicked instantly, her face heating up.

Peter patted her back calmly and grinned.

"She had some questions, so I taught her a bit. She was surprisingly quick today—picked it up right away."

"Huh? What kind of questions?" Mary asked, puzzled.

"N-Nothing!"

Whitney's face went nuclear. Steam practically rose from her head as she buried it into her chest.

Her fingers snuck behind Peter's waist—

—and twisted 180 degrees.

"SSS—!!!"

Peter nearly yelped in pain.

Mary squinted. "You two are acting really weird today…"

"Haha… it's nothing. Let's eat," Peter said quickly, shooting Whitney a pleading look.

She finally let go—and even gently rubbed the spot she'd just assaulted.

Their exchanged glances carried an unmistakable glow.

That was the color of happiness.

…..

Because they had an early flight the next morning, the three returned to their rooms early.

What Mary didn't know…

was that Peter's room was completely empty.

"I warned you! Nothing allowed—just hugging!"

Whitney whispered nervously as she sneaked Peter into her room like a thief.

Since they were heading to different destinations and wouldn't be on the same flight, this night was their last chance together before parting.

"Peter~…"

Whitney curled into his arms like a lazy cat.

"Mm? What is it?"

"Nothing… I just really like being this close to you. It makes me feel safe…"

She pressed a warm kiss beneath his chin.

Peter lowered his head, fingers tracing her creamy skin.

"Whitney… come travel with me."

She froze—then smiled softly.

"What? Can't bear to part?"

"…Yeah."

Peter nodded honestly.

She didn't answer right away—only kissed him deeply.

After a long moment, she whispered,

"I want to… but I'm afraid I'll hold you back."

"How could you?"

She suddenly laughed—a little dangerously.

"Oh? Really? Then what if I do this?"

She drew him in tightly, burying his head against her.

"Mmm…"

Peter let out a blissful sound. His body immediately betrayed him.

"See? You're totally weak to temptation~"

Whitney teased, cheeks glowing.

"So… maybe I really shouldn't—ah!"

She didn't get to finish.

Peter struck first.

Ambush—

A move that hits before the opponent can act. Priority +1.

Under the dim light, tangled shadows danced across the wall.

Outside, even the night wind seemed to let out an indescribable, breathless sigh…
