When i finally opened my eyes, the world was sterile and white. The sharp smell of disinfectant filled in my nose, and the steady beep-beep of a heart monitor echoed the throbbing pain in my head.
Then i saw him.
Keifer was sitting in a chair by the bed, his head resting in his hands. For a split second, he looked exhausted -broken, even - but the moment he realized i was awake, the mask of ice instantly slid back into place. Hee stood up, preparing to leave.
"Wait," i croacked,my throat went dry.
Keifer paused, his back to me.
"The doctor said you fainted from extreme stress.You're fine now. Iam leaving""
" Look at me keifer, "i pleaded, my voice was trembling.
He slowly turned, but he didn't meet my gaze.
He stared at the wall just above my head, his expression empty.
"Do you really love me?" I asked.
The question was a whisper, but it felt like a scream in the quiet room.
"The things you said at school, was all of it really just a lie? "
My voice cracked at the end.
Keifer's jaw tightened.
" i already told you. It was a plan, you were a tool to get to aries- nothing more. "
"Then why did you catch me? " i cried out, tears finally spilling over.
" If you dont care, if ia
"If you dont care, if i am just a pawn,why didn't you let me hit the floor? Why were you the first one to move? Why did you look so scared when i closed my eyes? "
His hands balled into fists at his sides, he finally looked at me, but his eyes were like flint.
"Reflex, jay jay. That's all it was. Dont overthink a simple reaction.I don't love you. I never did....."
"I don't believe in you, " i sobbed. Reaching out as if i grab the truth from him.
" look at me in the eye and say it. "
" TELL ME YOU FEEL NOTHING!" i screamed.
Keifer didn't move. He didn't come closer. Instead he took a step back toward the door.
" Believe whatever you want, " he said, he voice devoid of emotion.
" it doesn't change the fact that this game is over. Get some rest. You'll need it to deal with the fact that you are alone now. "
He turned and walked out of the hospital room without looking back.
I collapsed back against the pillows.
The sound of my own heart breaking louder than the monitor.
I felt like i was drowning in the silence keifer left behind.
author's pov:
she thought she was completely alone she didn't know that out in the hallway Percy had witnessed the entire thing (in this story jay know already percy as her step brother )and he was already holding his phone, dailing a number that started with +1.
In a high rise apartment in New York city, a phone began to vibrate.
keifer pov:
l sat in the chair.
I looked at jay. She looked so small and fragile in that hospital bed. My hand hovered over the bedsheet wanting to reach her, but i pulled back.
Don't... Don't touch her. You dont have that right any more.
Her eyes fluttered open.
Then, she saw me. The memory flooded back, i watched her heart rate spike on the monitor.
I stood up immediately, i had to get out. If i stayed, i would break. Then she asked the question that made my breath hitch.
"Do you really love me? "
Yes.I wanted to scream.I love you so much its making me go insane.
But instead i told her that it was a plan nothing more.
She didnt stop.
" Reflex jay jay" i lied.
I didn't look at her. If i looked into her eyes, i would fall to my knees and beg for her forgiveness.
But to keep her safee, she had to believe i was a monster. She had to hate me enough to never want to see me again.
I walked out, i didnt stop until iwas at the end of the hallway.
I didn't notice percy standing in the shadows, watching me with full of judgment.

The drive to home:-
keifer pov:
The drive back was a blur of high speed turns and suffocating ringing silence. I pushed to it's limits, the engine roar barely louder than the frantic beep beep of the hospital monitor still echoing in my skull.
I was alone,finally. But Jay's pale face was haunting me.
I reached the house and practically kicked the door open. I didn't turn the lights on. I didn't need to see the shadows, i was already alone.
I went for the bottle of whiskey, my hands trembling so violantly that the glass clinked against my teeth.
I have to do it. It's for her safety. If she hates me, she lives. I kept repeating the manthra but it felt like swallowing glass.
The front door slammed against the wall. I didn't even have to look. The air in the room grew heavy with the collective rage of section e. They filled in - cin, rory, calix, edrix, eman, Yuri, David, and the others- foming a semi circle around me like a firing squad.
"Get out", i muttered, my voice was cut through the silence like blade."I am not in the mood for an audience."
"We aren't here to entertain you, keifer!" ci-n screamed, his voice was cracking." we are here because we wanted to hear the truth. "
"It was a plan," i said, tilting the glass back. The burn in my throat was nothing compared to the physical ache in my chest."she was a pawn. The game is over, go home."
" A pawn? " Rory stepped forward, his frame casting a shadow over me.
" I 've seen you play games, keifer. I've seen you cold, i've seen you calculating. But i have never seen you look the way you did when she hit the floor. "
" we saw you! When she started to buckle, you dont look like a guy finishing a job. You looked like the world was ending! You lunged for her before anyone else could even move. "
"you're over thinking it, " i lied, my jaw tightened until it hurts.
"I just didn't want the paper work of a dead girl on my record."
" Don't you dare!" calix shouted, slamming a hand against the kitchen counter.
"we saw your hands, keifer! When you held her in that hallway, you weren't just catching her. You were clinging to her like she was the only thing that keep you from drowning. You held her closer than you ever did. And that was the part of script too? The way you whispered her name like it was a prayer? "
"It was a reflex," i snapped, finally turrning to face them, my cold mask slipping just enough to show the hollow dark circles under my eyes.
"then why are you drinking alone in the dark? "
David asked quietly, his voice cutting through the shouting.
" if you won, why do you look so defeated? Why couldn't you stay in that hospital room for mor than five minutes after she woke up? "
" because she was crying, " i spat, the words escaping before i could stop them." it was annoying, "
"Liar!" Yuri stepped into my space, his eyes burning.
" You couldn't stay because you knew that if you looked at her for one more second you'd break. "
" You saw her gasping for air and you realized you were the one who suffocating her. You tell yourself that she was just a pawn or the fact that you love her so much it's making you go insane? "
"i don't love her!" i roared.
Slamming the bottle down so hard it shattered amber liquid and shards of glass spraying across the floor.
" i never did! She was means to an end! She was a distraction! Now get out before i lose my temper!"
A heavy silence followed the explosion, they didn't flinch. They just looked at me with a pity that felt like stabbing me with a dull blade.
"you can lie to us, " Rory said, his voice dropping into a low rumble."You can tell the whole world you are a monster. You can even make jay jay believe that you are the villian in her story. But... You can't lie to yourself, keifer. We can still see the love in your eyes for her, Keifer. We don't know why you're doing this, but just don't make her break her once more, no matter how much you denies we know you love her. "
"You think you saved her today." Yuri added with a bitter laugh."you didn't, you just gave her a different kind of death. And you're the one who is going to have to live with the ghost. "
one by one they turned and walked out. The clickof door sounded like the final rhythmic beep of a heart monitor stopping.
I was alone. I sank into knees among the glass and the spilled whiskey, my breath coming in ragged ggasps. I stared at my hands, they were still shaking.
I had won the game. I had kept her safe by making her hate me. But it feel like i was the one who had died.
But i had to keep lying... I had to be the monster to keep her safe from the mess my life beacome. I knew they were Right. She was breaking, and i was the one who had caused it.....
