Charlotte sat alone in the lounge, her phone clenched tightly in her fist as if it were the only thing anchoring her. Her heart pounded relentlessly, each beat louder than the last. Fear curled deep in her chest, refusing to loosen its grip. No matter how many times Fernando had told her to rest to stop worrying she simply couldn't. It wasn't something she could switch off.
The mansion had fallen into a heavy silence. Everyone else was asleep.
Everyone except her… and Fernando.
They were the only ones who knew.
The distant sound of approaching cars shattered the quiet. Charlotte shot to her feet instantly, her pulse spiking. The front door swung open, and her eyes widened at the sight of a familiar flash of silver.
