Yeah, people were watching. Cousins, aunts, random neighbors all coming up to hug Daniel and size me up like I was exhibit A in the "Daniel Finally Settled Down" zoo. "So cute together!" "How long have you been dating?" "Cry of children soon?" I smiled through gritted teeth, said shit like "Oh, we're taking it slowly," while Daniel's hand hovered at my lower back every time someone got too close, like he was actually protecting me or something. It pissed me off how natural it felt.
By noon we were herded to the games area big field with hay bales for seats, a makeshift stage, and a banner that read "Couples' Challenge: Prove Your Love!" Mom practically shoved us into the sign-up line.
"Three-legged race first," she announced. "Then the trivia. You'll crush it."
I groaned. "This is a nightmare."
Daniel leaned in, voice low. "We fall on purpose, make it funny, get disqualified. Mom laughs, we're off the hook."
"Fine. But if you trip me on purpose…"
"I won't."
