Chapter 29 - Tien Shinhan - Part 6

Master Roshi hurried behind the back wall of the stadium building, checking left and right to make sure the coast was clear.

He let out a long, weary sigh, peeling the sweaty gray wig off his shiny bald head.

"Phew... that was too close," Roshi muttered to himself, stashing the wig and his sunglasses into a capsule.

"If I had stayed in that ring any longer, I might have actually had a heart attack. These kids are getting too strong for their own good."

He reached for his regular orange shirt, ready to slip back into his role as the harmless, perverted hermit.

"You dropped your glue."

"Gah!"

Roshi jumped nearly three feet in the air, clutching his chest.

He spun around to see Chi-Chi leaning casually against the wall, holding the tube of spirit gum he had just fumbled.

"C-Chi-Chi!" Roshi stammered, frantically trying to hide his bald head with his hands.

"I... uh... this isn't what it looks like! I was just... holding this wig for a friend! I am definitely not Jackie Chun!"

Chi-Chi rolled her eyes, tossing the glue tube to him.

He fumbled and caught it.

"Don't get so worked up. I've known it was you since the moment you stepped into the ring."

Roshi blinked, slowly lowering his hands.

"You... you knew?"

"It's obvious. Same build. Same voice. Same techniques only the Turtle Hermit is supposed to know. The only difference is the wig."

She walked over to him.

"It fooled everyone back then… including me. But now that I'm looking at you properly, the disguise isn't as convincing as you think."

Roshi slumped his shoulders, a bead of sweat dropping from his head.

"Is it really that obvious?"

"Yes." Chi-Chi replied dryly.

She crossed her arms, her expression turning curious.

"There's just one thing I don't get. Why do all this? Why invent another identity instead of entering as Master Roshi?"

Roshi leaned against the wall, looking up at the sky.

"As Roshi, you would have shown restraint out of respect. As Jackie Chun, I could face you honestly. And like your trial in the wilderness, this was done for one purpose, to teach humility."

He looked her in the eye.

"Strength without perspective leads to arrogance. Young fighters think they've reached the top, and their growth ends there. I needed Goku, Krillin… and you… to learn that there is always someone stronger, and that the skies above this world are far higher than you imagine."

"If all of this was to teach us not to grow arrogant, then why did you stop? You forfeited. If your intent was to show me the gap between our strengths, why didn't you end the fight?"

Roshi smiled.

"Because my mind is at peace now. I watched you fight today, how you carried yourself. There was no ego in your movements, only spirit and respect. In that moment, I understood something… I no longer need to be the wall standing in your way."

...

Chi-Chi straightened at his words.

"I see it clearly now. No matter who wins, whether it's you, Goku, Yamcha or Krillin, victory won't corrupt you. Pride won't consume you. You've become true martial artists."

Chi-Chi stared at him for a moment, surprised by the depth of his words.

She let out a small huff of laughter.

"You talk as if I were one of your students. I thought you would have forgotten me after I refused to become your disciple."

Roshi chuckled, placing his sunglasses back on his face.

"You always were my student, Chi-Chi, just not on paper."

Master Roshi's expression turned solemn again. He stared intently at Chi-Chi, the playful demeanor completely gone.

"Chi-Chi, before you go... I have a favor to ask of you."

"A favor? What is it?"

"Your next opponent..." Roshi began, his voice grave.

"I need you to do something more than just beat him. I need you to guide him away from the darkness and show him the Path of Light. That is now your duty as a martial artist."

"You're talking about the three-eyed guy, Tien Shinhan."

"Yes, he is a disciple of the Crane Hermit, my old rival. He has been taught that martial arts is a tool only for killing and cruelty. But I have watched him closely... there is a spark of decency buried deep under that hate. He is misguided, not evil."

Roshi sighed, looking down at his hands.

"I had a strong feeling that I was the one destined to fight him in this tournament. I intended to use our match to open his eyes, to save him from Shen's poisoning influence. I thought it was my responsibility to correct the mistakes of the past."

He looked back up at her, a small, trusting smile appearing on his face.

"But... fate had other plans. I lost to you. You proved that the new generation has already surpassed the old."

He placed a hand firmly on her shoulder.

"Since you defeated me, you must take up the burden I cannot carry. I am entrusting this mission to you, Chi-Chi. You have the strength and the spirit to reach him. Make him see that true strength comes from the heart, not from malice."

Chi-Chi looked at the old master, feeling the weight of his request.

She nodded firmly.

"I understand, I still owe him for what he did to Yamcha, but... I'll try to save him while I'm beating him."

The tournament pressed on, the excitement in the stadium reaching a fever pitch.

Following Chi-Chi's shocking victory over the former champion, the remaining quarter-final matches concluded.

In the third match, Krillin faced off against the strange, doll-like Chiaotzu. Despite struggling against the Crane disciple's telekinetic powers and the searing Dodompa ray, Krillin proved that the Turtle School trained the mind as well as the body.

Outsmarting his opponent with quick thinking and tactical brilliance, Krillin knocked Chiaotzu out of the ring, securing his spot in the next round.

In the fourth and final match of the block, Goku faced Pamput. It was hardly a contest. Goku delivered a single elbow to Pamput's chest, knocking the man out cold in seconds.

The announcer's voice boomed through the loudspeakers, vibrating with anticipation.

"Ladies and Gentlemen! The quarter-finals have concluded! We are now down to the final four fighters! The stage is set for the Semi-Finals!"

The giant scoreboard flickered, updating the bracket for all to see.

SEMI-FINAL MATCH 1: Chi-Chi (The Ox-King's Daughter) vs. Tien Shinhan (Crane School Disciple)

SEMI-FINAL MATCH 2: Son Goku (Turtle School) vs. Krillin (Turtle School)

A hush fell over the group in the waiting area.

The two fighters stepped onto the newly repaired ring.

Chi-Chi didn't immediately take her fighting stance. Instead, she stood relaxed, studying Tien Shinhan.

She looked at the way he positioned his feet and the specific angle of his hands.

"I've been watching you, I saw that little porcelain friend of yours, Chiaotzu, use the Dodon Ray technique earlier. And now, looking at your stance... it's undeniable. That efficient, cruel style of movement... it reminds me of someone I met a long time ago."

She locked eyes with him.

"Tell me, do you happen to know an assassin by the name of Tao Pai Pai?"

Tien Shinhan's expression shifted instantly. A look of reverence crossed his face, mixed with a hint of danger.

"Tao Pai Pai?" Tien repeated, his voice low.

"Of course I know him. He is the younger brother of my master, the Crane Hermit. He is a legendary assassin, the most lethal killer in the world. You would do well to speak his name with respect."

"I see. So my suspicions were correct. You really are cut from the same cloth."

"What is that supposed to mean? Why bring up Master Tao?"

"Because you speak of him as if he's an untouchable legend, but he wasn't untouchable. I defeated Tao Pai Pai three years ago."

Tien froze.

"What? You lie!"

"He was strong, yes. But he was hollow. He fought without honor, only for cruelty. And because of that, he fell."

She raised her hands, finally shifting into her combat stance.

"Make no mistake. That is exactly what awaits you here and now if you refuse to change your path."

"You... defeated Master Tao?"

Tien Shinhan stared at her for a moment, stunned silence hanging in the air. Then, his face contorted into a mask of pure, unbridled fury.

He let out a harsh, mocking laugh.

"Don't make me laugh! You are delusional! Master Tao is the greatest assassin in the world! A mere child like you couldn't possibly touch him, let alone defeat him! He probably just ignored you because you weren't worth his time!"

On the sidelines, however, the Crane Hermit, Master Shen, wasn't laughing. He gripped the wall.

Tao hasn't returned in three years. I assumed he was on a long assignment... but if this girl is telling the truth... No. Impossible!

"Tien!" Shen screamed from the crowd, his voice shrill and commanding.

"Don't listen to her lies! She is mocking our school! She is insulting your masters! Kill her! Break her neck and throw her corpse out of the ring!"

Tien's eyes narrowed into slits.

"With pleasure, Master."

...

"BEGIN!"
