Chapter 50 - The Emperor

( Ahhhhhhhh... final chapter)

Morning arrived quietly over the Central Kingdom.

The palace stood tall at the heart of the capital, its stone towers rising above the surrounding city like silent guardians. Flags bearing the royal crest hung heavily from the high walls, barely moving in the still air.

Inside the palace, the Grand Court Chamber had already begun to fill.

It was the largest hall in the kingdom.

Tall pillars carved with the history of past emperors stretched up toward a domed ceiling painted with scenes of war, prosperity, and coronations.

Sunlight poured through the long arched windows, casting pale gold light across the polished marble floor.

At the far end of the chamber stood the Imperial Throne.

Empty.

The massive seat of carved ivory and dark wood seemed heavier without its ruler.

Rows of long benches filled the hall. Seated upon them were the most powerful figures in the kingdom - high chiefs, court elders, military commanders, ministers, scholars, and nobles.

The people responsible for choosing the next Emperor.

Low murmurs filled the room.

"They should be here by now."

"I heard the journey was difficult."

"Both princes survived the war in the west, didn't they?"

"Yes. Impressive men."

A tall elder leaned slightly toward the chief beside him.

"They say the Second Prince is the clever one."

The chief chuckled softly.

"And the thrid Prince?"

"Dangerous."

Another voice joined quietly.

"Dangerous men often make the strongest rulers."

At that moment, the large double doors of the chamber opened.

The guards standing beside them struck their spears against the ground.

"Prince William of the Northern Court!"

"Prince Adrian of the western Court!"

The murmurs instantly quieted.

All eyes turned toward the entrance.

William walked in first.

His posture was straight, his expression calm, his presence commanding without effort. Beside him walked Adrian, slightly slower but equally composed.

William subtly adjusted his pace to match Adrian's.

They walked together down the long center aisle.

The sound of their footsteps echoed softly through the chamber.

Many of the chiefs studied them closely.

Some whispered again.

"They're younger than I expected."

"But look at their composure."

"They carry themselves well."

William and Adrian finally stopped before the raised platform where the council of elders sat.

Both princes bowed respectfully.

The eldest among the council - a man with long silver hair and deep-set eyes - nodded slowly.

"Welcome, Princes."

His voice carried easily across the hall.

"We appreciate your swift arrival during this difficult time."

William straightened slightly.

"We came as soon as we received the summons."

The elder nodded again.

Then his gaze moved past them.

His brows slowly furrowed.

"Where is the Third Prince?"

A quiet murmur passed through the chamber again.

One of the military commanders leaned forward slightly.

"He should have arrived by now."

Another chief spoke.

"Unless he has chosen not to attend."

The elder lifted his hand, silencing the room.

He turned to one of the court messengers standing nearby.

"Do we have word of his location?"

The messenger bowed quickly.

"Yes, Elder."

The room grew quiet.

"The Third Prince was last seen traveling toward the Southern villages."

Several people frowned.

"What business does he have there at a time like this?"

The messenger hesitated before answering.

"He was... escorting an injured companion for treatment."

The chamber erupted into whispers.

"He abandoned the throne for that?"

"Unbelievable."

"A prince putting personal matters before the empire?"

The elder's expression hardened.

"The summons of the Imperial Court is not optional."

He looked around at the other council members.

"The Third Prince has failed to present himself before the court during a time of succession."

He paused.

"Therefore, according to the laws of the Central Kingdom..."

His voice echoed clearly.

"He is disqualified from consideration for the throne."

Some of the chiefs nodded in agreement.

Others exchanged looks but said nothing.

The elder turned his attention back to the remaining princes.

"Which leaves us with two candidates."

The room grew still again.

The elder clasped his hands together slowly.

"Prince Adrian."

Adrian lifted his head.

"You are known for your wisdom and compassion."

His gaze then shifted to William.

"Prince William."

"You are known for your strength and decisive leadership."

A few chiefs nodded approvingly.

The elder continued.

"The Empire now stands without a ruler. It is our duty to determine who among you will ascend the throne."

The council members began quietly discussing among themselves.

Voices overlapped.

"The empire needs stability."

"William has proven himself in battle."

"But Adrian is respected by the scholars and western governors."

"Yes, but this is a time for strength."

The discussion continued for several minutes.

Finally, the elder lifted his hand again.

The chamber fell silent.

"We have reached a decision."

William stood still.

Adrian's expression remained calm.

The elder inhaled slowly.

"The next Emperor of the Central Kingdom shall be-"

"Wait."

The single word cut through the room.

All eyes turned.

Adrian had spoken.

The elder blinked slightly.

"Prince Adrian?"

Adrian stepped forward slowly.

His voice was calm, but firm.

"I withdraw my name from consideration."

The chamber froze.

For a moment, no one moved.

William turned sharply toward him.

"What?"

Adrian didn't look at him yet.

He addressed the council instead.

"My health is still unstable," he explained quietly. "The treatment I'm undergoing may take months before I fully recover."

The chiefs exchanged surprised glances.

Adrian continued.

"The empire cannot afford to wait that long for a ruler."

Only then did he turn to William.

William was staring at him in disbelief.

Adrian gave him a small, gentle smile.

" Prince William is far more fit to rule than I am right now."

William immediately shook his head.

"No."

He stepped closer.

"You're not doing this."

Adrian chuckled softly.

"I already did."

"Adrian-"

"This isn't sacrifice," Adrian said calmly.

"It's logic."

He looked back toward the council..

"The empire needs a strong Emperor now. Not months from now."

He gestured lightly toward William.

"And you won't find anyone more capable."

The chamber buzzed with whispers again.

"He's right."

"William is the strongest among them."

"The people respect him."

"Yes... yes, he would be a powerful ruler."

The elder studied Adrian carefully.

Then slowly nodded.

"Your honesty honors you, Prince Adrian."

He then turned to William.

The room gradually quieted again.

"Prince William..."

A faint smile touched the elder's lips.

"It appears the decision has made itself."

Night settled quietly over the Central Kingdom palace.

The celebrations in the outer courtyards had begun to fade. Earlier that evening, the palace had been alive with voices, movement, and hurried preparations for the imperial ceremony that would take place the following day.

But now the halls had grown quieter.

Torches burned softly along the long stone corridors, their flames flickering gently against the walls.

Inside the royal quarters prepared for William, the room was dimly lit by a few lanterns placed along the walls.

The chamber was large, meant for an emperor - high ceilings, heavy curtains, carved furniture polished to perfection.

Yet despite the grandeur, the room felt strangely quiet.

Almost empty.

William stood near the wide window overlooking the palace gardens. The moonlight stretched across the floor, casting long pale shadows.

Behind him, the door opened softly.

Adrian stepped inside.

William didn't need to turn to know it was him.

"You should be resting," William said quietly.

Adrian closed the door behind him and walked further into the room.

"I could say the same to you."

William finally turned around.

Adrian looked tired.

More tired than he had looked earlier in the court chamber.

The journey... the fight... the strain of the past days - it was all beginning to show.

William's expression softened slightly.

"You don't look well."

Adrian smiled faintly.

"I've looked worse."

William walked toward him slowly.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

The silence between them wasn't uncomfortable.

It was heavy.

Adrian exhaled softly.

"I came to talk to you before I leave."

William frowned.

"Leave?"

Adrian nodded slightly.

"I won't be able to stay for the ceremony tomorrow."

The words hung quietly in the air.

William stared at him.

"Why?"

Adrian hesitated for a moment before answering.

"My condition is getting worse again," he said calmly.

"The old man warned me this might happen if I delayed treatment too long."

William's jaw tightened slightly. " Yes, that true."

"I need to return to him soon," Adrian continued. "The treatment will take time."

He looked toward the window briefly.

"Possibly months."

William didn't say anything.

The weight of those words settled slowly in the room. He knew more than anyone that Adrian still needs treatment.

Finally, he spoke.

"So you're leaving tonight?"

"Before dawn," Adrian replied.

William let out a quiet breath.

"That soon."

Adrian nodded.

"I didn't want to delay any longer."

A small silence followed.

William looked at him carefully. He understood.

"You just helped decide the future of the empire," he said softly.

"And now you're leaving before you can even see it begin."

Adrian gave a small smile.

"I already know how it will begin."

His gaze met William's.

"You'll be sitting on that throne."

William shook his head slightly.

"You should be there."

Adrian shrugged lightly.

"Ceremonies are overrated."

William studied him for a moment.

Then he said quietly,

"I'll send men with you."

Adrian blinked. "That's not necessary."

"It is."

Adrian shook his head gently.

"I can travel quietly on my own."

"No," William replied firmly.

Adrian crossed his arms slightly.

"You don't need to waste soldiers escorting me."

William stepped closer. "I'm not asking."

Adrian sighed.

"You're becoming stubborn already."

William didn't even try to deny it.

"I'm responsible for the empire now," he said calmly.

"And that includes making sure the person I care about most doesn't collapse on the side of the road."

Adrian stared at him for a moment blushing slightly.

Then he chuckled quietly.

"You really are impossible."

William didn't smile.

"I'm serious."

Adrian looked away briefly before sighing again.

"Fine," he said. "You win."

William relaxed slightly.

A soft silence returned.

Adrian shifted his weight a little, clearly feeling the exhaustion in his body.

"I'm sorry," he said suddenly.

William looked at him. "For what?"

"For not staying to see you become emperor."

William stared at him for a moment.

Then he stepped closer until they were only a short distance apart.

"That doesn't matter," he said quietly.

Adrian raised an eyebrow.

"It doesn't?"

"No."William's voice softened slightly.

"What matters is that you come back."

Adrian's expression changed slightly.

William held his gaze.

"Promise me you will."

Adrian studied his face carefully.

"You sound like you're giving orders again."

"I am."

Adrian chuckled softly under his breath.

"You'll be a terrifying emperor."

William ignored the comment.

"Promise me."

The room fell quiet again.

Adrian's smile slowly softened.

Then he nodded.

"I'll come back."

William searched his face. "After I recover."

"Good."

Another silence followed.

But this one felt warmer.

Outside, the palace gardens rustled softly in the night wind.

Adrian finally spoke again.

"You know," he said lightly, "this might be the last peaceful night you get for a while."

William raised an eyebrow. "Oh?"

Adrian gestured vaguely toward the palace.

"Soon you become emperor."

William exhaled quietly. "Yes."

Adrian tilted his head slightly.

"Scared?"

William thought about it for a moment.

Then he answered honestly.

"A little."

Adrian smiled.

"That's probably a good sign."

William looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because the ones who aren't scared usually become terrible rulers."

William huffed quietly.

"That's reassuring."

Adrian laughed softly.

For a moment, the weight of the throne... the empire... the future...

All of it faded.

And it was just the two of them standing in the quiet room.

William finally spoke again.

"Come back to me when you're healed."

Adrian held his gaze.

"I will."

And for the first time that night, William allowed himself to believe it.
