Rain hammered the city so hard it blurred everything into moving shadows. Streetlights melted into golden streaks across the pavement, and the air smelled like wet concrete and cold metal. Tobio tightened his grip on his umbrella as wind shoved against it, his shoes splashing through shallow puddles while he hurried home.

That was when he heard it.

A faint, trembling cry—almost swallowed by the rain.

Curiosity tugged at him, stronger than common sense.

He slowed, then turned toward a narrow alley wedged between two buildings. The darkness there felt heavier, thicker, like the city had forgotten it existed. Carefully, Tobio stepped closer.

There, crouched near a stack of broken crates, was a man soaked from head to toe. His coat hung loosely from his shoulders, water dripping from the edges, yet he held it tightly closed around something small. When the fabric shifted, a tiny kitten peeked out, shivering.

The man's hair clung to his face, shadowing sharp, tired eyes. His knuckles were bruised, red and swollen, as if he'd been fighting the world—and losing.

"You'll catch a cold," Tobio said gently, the words escaping before he could stop himself.

The stranger stiffened, then slowly looked up. For a moment, his gaze was guarded, almost defensive. When he spoke, his voice was low but steady.

"So will you," he said. "Unless we share."

The way he said it wasn't flirtatious. Not teasing. Just honest—like stating a simple fact of survival.

Tobio hesitated only a second before stepping closer. He tilted his umbrella, letting its shelter stretch wide enough for both of them. Rain immediately soaked his sleeve, but he didn't pull back.

"My name's Tobio," he offered.

The man studied him for a heartbeat longer, as if deciding whether trust was worth the risk.

"Kei," he finally said.

They stood there a moment, rain drumming above them, the kitten letting out a soft mewl. Then kei rose slowly to his feet, careful not to disturb the tiny bundle in his coat.

They began walking side by side beneath the umbrella, shoulders nearly touching. The alley faded behind them as they joined the street again, the kitten's small head peeking out curiously at the glowing lights.

Something about kei felt dangerous—like a storm that hadn't finished breaking yet. And yet, beneath that edge, there was something fragile, something quietly hurting.

Despite the rain, despite the cold seeping into his clothes, Tobio felt something unfamiliar settle in his chest.

For the first time that night—

he didn't feel alone.
