Chapter 401 - Before the Spotlight

The observation room was narrow enough that Martin could have touched both walls by spreading his arms. An angled window overlooked the rehearsal space, its dark surface keeping his reflection out of Elisebeth's view.

Rias closed the door but did not switch on the room lights. "Stay away from the glass. She should not be able to see you from this angle, but Elise notices movement when she is looking for a reason to stop rehearsing."

Martin remained a step back. "Does she look for reasons often?"

"Only when she is tired, hungry, annoyed, worried, bored, excited, or awake."

Below them, Elisebeth stood at the center of a floor marked with colored tape. She wore black rehearsal pants, low shoes, and a loose gray top, with her midnight-violet hair pulled into a high ponytail. Without her stage clothes or finished makeup, she looked closer to the woman who logged into Worldshell than the diva pictured on the banners outside.
