Chapter 69 - Seasoned with Love

Seasoned With Love

Season 4 – Episode 13: "No More Walking Away"

Amara's POV

The restaurant opened late that morning.

Not because we were unprepared.

Because Luke wasn't ready.

Not yet.

He stood in the kitchen, hands resting on the counter, staring at nothing in particular.

Carl leaned against the doorway.

"You don't have to do this today."

Luke didn't look up.

"Yes, I do."

Marcus hovered nearby, unusually quiet for once.

"That guy… from yesterday," he said carefully. "He coming back?"

Rose answered before Luke could.

"He won't have to."

Everyone looked at her.

Rose held up her phone.

"I made a call."

Marcus blinked.

"…you invited the problem?"

Rose shrugged slightly.

"I invited the truth."

Luke finally looked up.

"Who?"

Rose met his eyes.

"Someone who lost everything in that deal."

Silence.

Heavy.

Real.

Carl nodded slowly.

"That's fair."

Marcus whispered,

"I feel like I should sit down for this."

I stepped into the kitchen, the baby resting quietly against my shoulder.

Luke looked at me.

"You don't have to stay for this."

I shook my head.

"Yes, I do."

His expression softened slightly.

But I didn't soften my voice.

"I'm not here to protect you from it, Luke."

"I know."

"I'm here to stand in it with you."

That mattered more.

A knock came at the door.

Right on time.

Marcus froze.

"…that's them."

Rose walked to the door and opened it.

A man stepped inside.

Mid-50s.

Tired eyes.

Worn posture.

But not weak.

There was strength there just buried under years of rebuilding.

Carl recognized it immediately.

"Hard years."

The man looked around the restaurant slowly.

Taking it in.

Then his eyes landed on Luke.

"You're him."

Luke stepped forward.

"Yes."

The man nodded once.

"Name's Thomas Reed."

Marcus whispered to Carl,

"He looks like he's seen everything."

Carl nodded.

"He has."

Rose gestured toward a table.

"Would you like to sit?"

Thomas didn't move.

"No."

His eyes stayed on Luke.

"I didn't come to eat."

Fair enough.

Luke didn't try to redirect it.

"Then let's talk."

Thomas took a few steps closer.

Slow.

Measured.

"I lost my construction company because of that deal."

The words were calm.

But sharp.

Like they'd been waiting years to be said.

Marcus swallowed.

Carl crossed his arms.

Listening.

Thomas continued.

"Twenty-two employees."

He looked around the restaurant.

"Families."

A pause.

"All gone."

The air felt heavier.

Luke didn't interrupt.

Didn't defend.

Didn't explain.

Just listened.

"I believed in that project," Thomas said. "I trusted the people behind it."

His eyes narrowed slightly.

"I trusted you."

That one landed.

Hard.

Luke nodded slowly.

"You had reason to."

Thomas let out a small, humorless laugh.

"Did I?"

Luke met his gaze.

"I tried to stop it before it collapsed."

Thomas stepped closer.

"But you didn't stay after it did."

There it was again.

The truth.

Unavoidable now.

Luke didn't flinch this time.

"No."

Thomas shook his head.

"You walked away."

"Yes."

Silence.

Marcus shifted uncomfortably.

Rose stayed still.

Carl watched Luke closely.

Waiting to see who he would be in this moment.

Luke took a breath.

Then said something different.

"I was wrong."

Thomas frowned slightly.

"About what?"

"About thinking walking away was enough."

That shifted the energy.

Just a little.

Thomas crossed his arms.

"And now?"

Luke didn't hesitate.

"Now I face it."

Thomas looked skeptical.

"Facing it doesn't rebuild what I lost."

"No," Luke said. "It doesn't."

"Then what does this do?"

That was the question.

The real one.

Why now?

Why here?

Luke stepped forward.

"I can't undo what happened to you."

Thomas didn't argue.

"Then what are you offering?"

Luke didn't give a polished answer.

Didn't reach for something impressive.

He told the truth.

"I'm offering accountability."

Marcus whispered,

"That's new."

Thomas stared at him.

"That's not money."

"No."

"That's not a solution."

"No."

"Then why should I care?"

That question hung in the air.

And that's when I stepped forward.

Not to interrupt.

But because silence wasn't enough anymore.

"You don't have to care," I said.

Both men looked at me.

Thomas studied me carefully.

"And you are?"

"Amara."

I adjusted the baby slightly in my arms.

"I'm part of this too."

Thomas glanced at the baby.

Then back at me.

"You standing with him?"

I nodded.

"Yes."

"But not blindly."

That caught his attention.

"What does that mean?"

I met his gaze.

"It means I know what he did."

Luke didn't look surprised.

He let me speak.

"It also means I expect him to do better."

Thomas raised an eyebrow.

"Better how?"

I didn't soften it.

"By not hiding behind 'it's complicated.'"

Marcus whispered,

"Okay Amara."

Rose smirked slightly.

I continued.

"By not acting like intentions are enough."

Carl nodded once.

Strong.

I looked at Luke.

"By doing something real."

Then back at Thomas.

"You're right to be angry."

Thomas didn't respond.

But he didn't disagree either.

"You're right to question him."

A pause.

"But don't pretend showing up doesn't matter."

That landed differently.

Thomas looked at Luke again.

"You really think this changes anything?"

Luke answered quietly.

"No."

Then added,

"But it changes me."

That was the difference.

Not trying to fix the past.

Owning it.

Thomas studied him for a long moment.

Long enough that Marcus stopped fidgeting.

Long enough that even the restaurant noise seemed to fade.

Finally, Thomas spoke.

"I don't forgive you."

Luke nodded.

"I didn't expect you to."

Thomas glanced around the restaurant again.

Then back at Luke.

"But I see you."

That was something.

Not forgiveness.

But not nothing.

Thomas turned toward the door.

Rose stepped aside to let him pass.

But before leaving, he stopped.

"One thing," he said without turning around.

"If you're serious about accountability…"

Luke waited.

"Then don't just say it."

Thomas glanced back slightly.

"Build something that proves it."

Then he left.

The door closed quietly.

The restaurant exhaled.

Marcus sat down immediately.

"…I need water."

Carl chuckled softly.

"That went better than it could have."

Rose nodded.

"He didn't explode."

Luke stood still for a moment.

Then looked at me.

"You didn't hold back."

I shook my head.

"No."

"Thank you."

I met his eyes.

"Don't thank me yet."

A small pause.

"You still have work to do."

Luke nodded.

"I know."

I looked down at the baby.

Then back at him.

"And now you do it without running."

Luke's voice was steady.

"I'm not running."

And this time…

I believed him.

Because he didn't just say it.

He stayed.

Right there in the middle of it.
