Seasoned With Love
Season 4 – Episode 17: "When You Answer the Past"
Amara's POV
The restaurant was full.
Laughter.
Plates moving.
Marcus arguing with a customer about whether extra syrup counted as "emotional support."
Normal.
But underneath it…
Something wasn't normal.
Luke had been quiet all day.
Not distant.
Just… thinking.
And I knew exactly why.
Adrian.
The past didn't knock softly.
It walked in, sat down, and waited.
I stood at the counter rocking the baby gently while Rose checked the afternoon numbers.
"He hasn't said anything yet," she murmured.
I nodded.
"He will."
Rose glanced toward Luke.
"He's carrying it."
"I know."
Marcus slid over with a tray.
"I don't like when Luke goes quiet."
Carl joined us.
"That's when he makes big decisions."
Marcus pointed.
"Exactly. Silent Luke is dangerous Luke."
Rose smirked.
"Only to bad ideas."
Across the room Luke stood near the window again.
Looking out.
But not really seeing outside.
Seeing something else.
Something behind him.
"Go," Rose said softly.
I looked at her.
"Talk to him."
I nodded.
BY THE WINDOW
I walked up beside him.
"You've been staring at the same spot for ten minutes."
Luke gave a small smile.
"Not the same spot."
"What are you looking at?"
He didn't answer right away.
Then quietly—
"A version of myself I don't want to be again."
That landed.
I shifted the baby slightly in my arms.
"He didn't come here to pull you backward."
Luke shook his head.
"No."
"Then why does it feel like that?"
Luke exhaled slowly.
"Because I left things unfinished."
I studied him.
"You walked away for the right reasons."
"Yes."
"But?" I asked.
"But I didn't stay to help the people who were affected."
The honesty in that hurt more than if he had argued.
I stepped closer.
"Luke… you can't fix everything."
"I know."
"Then what are you trying to fix?"
He looked at me.
"Responsibility."
That word again.
Heavy.
Solid.
I nodded slowly.
"And what happens to us if you take that on?"
Luke didn't answer immediately.
Which was an answer.
The baby made a small sound.
Luke looked down at him.
His expression softened instantly.
"I'm not risking this."
"Then don't," I said gently.
Luke shook his head.
"It's not that simple."
I sighed softly.
"It never is with you."
That made him smile just a little.
Then I asked the question that mattered.
"What do you actually want to do?"
Luke looked out the window one more time.
Then back at me.
"I want to help him rebuild."
There it was.
Clear.
Certain.
I nodded.
"Okay."
Luke blinked slightly.
"That's it?"
"That's it."
He studied me.
"You're not going to argue?"
"No."
"Why not?"
"Because I know you."
Luke waited.
"You don't do this out of guilt," I continued. "You do it because it's who you are."
Luke looked down for a moment.
Then back up.
"But it will cost time."
"I know."
"It might slow down the expansion."
"I know."
"It could bring more problems."
I smiled faintly.
"When has that ever stopped us?"
That got a real smile out of him.
Small.
But real.
The kind that means something settled.
BACK AT THE COUNTER
Marcus leaned in immediately when we walked back.
"So?"
Rose crossed her arms.
"Decision?"
Carl watched quietly.
Luke didn't rush it.
"I'm going to help Adrian."
Marcus threw his hands up.
"I KNEW IT."
Rose nodded slowly.
"That makes sense."
Carl added,
"We can adjust the timeline."
Marcus blinked.
"Wait, we're just okay with this?"
Rose looked at him.
"We're not just a business, Marcus."
Carl nodded.
"We're a foundation."
Marcus sighed.
"Fine… but I still get to complain."
"Of course you do," Rose said.
Luke looked at the team.
"I won't let it affect the restaurant."
Marcus pointed.
"You better not."
Luke smirked slightly.
"I won't."
Then Rose said something important.
"We do this the right way."
Luke nodded.
"We always do."
Carl added,
"And we protect what we've built."
Luke looked around the room.
At everything.
At everyone.
"Yes."
LATER THAT NIGHT
The restaurant had closed.
Chairs stacked.
Lights dimmed.
The baby was asleep upstairs.
Luke and I sat alone at the long table.
Quiet.
Peaceful.
For a moment.
Then I asked softly
"You're not afraid?"
Luke looked at me.
"I am."
"Of what?"
"That helping him will open doors I closed for a reason."
I nodded.
"That's fair."
Luke leaned back slightly.
"But I'm more afraid of ignoring it."
I reached for his hand.
"You're not alone this time."
Luke squeezed my hand gently.
"I know."
Silence settled again.
But it wasn't heavy.
It was steady.
Then Luke said something that mattered more than anything else that day.
"I'm not the same person I was back then."
"No," I said.
"You're better."
He smiled faintly.
"That's because of this."
He gestured around.
The restaurant.
The life.
The baby upstairs.
Us.
And in that moment…
I realized something.
The past didn't come back to break him.
It came back to see who he had become.
And this time…
He was ready to answer it.
