Chapter 18 - Chapter Eighteen- The Winter Ascension.

‎Vivian.

‎I flipped open my laptop with shaking fingers.

‎I didn't know what I was expecting—an update, a delay, maybe another polite rejection wrapped in careful words. My mind was still tangled in the events of the night before. Sebastian's voice. Cynthia's calm presence beside him. Mrs. Ravenscroft's unreadable silence.

‎Too much had happened too fast.

‎The cursor blinked on the screen.

‎Inbox refreshed.

‎Then—

‎New Message.

‎My breath caught in my throat.

‎The sender line made my heart stutter.

‎Valenridge Council of Lineage & Ascension

‎CC: Mrs. Helena Ravenscroft

‎CC: Sebastian Ravenscroft

‎My fingers went cold.

‎Slowly—like I was afraid the screen might explode—I opened it.

‎Subject: Formal Invitation — The Winter Ascension Rite

‎Miss. Vivian Ravenscroft,

‎By decree of the Valenridge Council and in accordance with ancestral covenant, you are hereby invited to present yourself as an eligible First Daughter at the upcoming Winter Ascension.

‎The Winter Ascension is a closed ceremonial gathering reserved exclusively for the elite families of Valenridge—an annual rite in which eligible heirs and first daughters are formally presented before the Council.

‎Attendance signifies eligibility for selection, alliance consideration, and lineage confirmation.

‎Date: December 21st

‎Location: The Ascension Hall, Valenridge

‎Please confirm your acceptance within seventy-two (72) hours.

‎The room tilted.

‎I stared at the screen, my pulse pounding violently in my ears.

‎Miss Vivian Ravenscroft.

‎Not Montclair.

‎Ravenscroft.

‎Valenridge had already decided who I was—even when my place felt uncertain.

‎The Winter Ascension.

‎Every child raised around Valenridge knew the stories.

‎It wasn't a ball.

‎It wasn't a celebration.

‎It wasn't romance dressed in silk.

‎It was a rite.

‎Once every year, at the deepest edge of winter, Valenridge gathered its elite—the billionaires, the old-money bloodlines, the families whose names bent governments without ever appearing in public records.

‎Each family presented:

‎Their first daughters

‎Their eligible male heirs

‎The sons were not required to choose that night.

‎But once interest was shown, destiny shifted.

‎Contracts followed.

‎Alliances formed.

‎Legacies locked into place.

‎Being chosen was honor.

‎Being unchosen was quiet exile.

‎I swallowed hard.

‎If I attended…

‎Someone else could choose me.

‎Someone powerful.

‎Someone strategic.

‎Someone who wasn't Sebastian.

‎And that—

‎That would shatter everything I had believed was already written.

‎My fingers trembled as I pushed the laptop away from me.

‎"No," I whispered. "No… no…"

‎Clara looked up from the couch instantly. "Viv? What's wrong?"

‎I turned the screen toward her.

‎Her eyes widened as she read.

‎"Oh my God," she breathed. "The Winter Ascension?"

‎I nodded slowly, my throat tight.

‎"If I accept this," I said hoarsely, "someone else may choose me there."

‎Clara sat up straighter. "And that would change everything."

‎"Yes," I whispered. "It would destroy the destiny I have with Sebastian."

‎She went quiet for a moment, studying my face. Then she sighed softly, almost dreamily.

‎"Vivian," she said, "you are so favored. Look at you—elite education, legacy, doors opening people only whisper about. Opportunities keep finding you."

‎She smiled faintly. "Sometimes I wish I could be born into a wealthy family like yours. Maybe then… my life would feel certain."

‎I reached for her hand immediately. "Don't say that."

‎She shrugged lightly. "It's true."

‎I squeezed her fingers. "Your time will come. And when it does, it will be right. Not forced. Not negotiated."

‎Her smile softened, reassured.

‎My phone rang.

‎The name on the screen made my breath hitch.

‎Mrs. Ravenscroft.

‎I answered instantly. "Mother—I was just about calling you."

‎"Vivian," she said, her tone unusually gentle. "I hope you are well."

‎"I am," I replied quickly. "I received the email."

‎"I assumed you would."

‎I hesitated before asking, my heart hammering. "Mother… am I expected to attend the rite?"

‎There was a pause.

‎Then—

‎"You are not going," she said firmly.

‎My knees weakened.

‎"What?" I whispered.

‎"Juliet is the Ravenscroft first daughter," she continued calmly. "She will represent the family at the Winter Ascension."

‎Tears blurred my vision instantly.

‎"But—"

‎"Be at peace," she added. "You remain Mrs. Sebastian Ravenscroft. Nothing changes that."

‎My breath broke completely.

‎"Thank you," I whispered, tears spilling freely now. "Thank you so much, Mother."

‎The call ended.

‎I stood frozen for a heartbeat.

‎Then joy burst through me like sunlight after a storm.

‎I laughed and cried at the same time and threw my arms around Clara.

‎"She said I'm still Mrs. Sebastian Ravenscroft," I sobbed.

‎Clara laughed with me. "I knew it!"

‎My phone rang again.

‎I pulled back instantly, heart racing.

‎Sebastian.

‎I answered quickly. "Hello?"

‎"Hello, my pretty angel," his voice came through—soft, familiar, dangerous.

‎I went quiet.

‎"How are you?" he asked gently.

‎"I'm… fine," I replied.

‎"I always know when you're lying," he said softly. "You got the email."

‎"Yes."

‎A pause stretched between us.

‎"But Juliet will represent me," I added carefully. "Why, Sebastian?"

‎Silence.

‎Then I said the truth—the one thing I needed him to hear.

‎"Because I am Mrs. Sebastian Ravenscroft."

‎The line went dead quiet.

‎Seconds passed.

‎Then—

‎"I'll call you back," he said.

‎The call ended.

‎My phone rang again almost immediately.

‎Hope surged through me.

‎Sebastian?

‎I answered quickly. "Hello?"

‎"Viv."

‎Stanley.

‎My mood snapped instantly.

‎"What the fuck do you want?" I snapped. "Get off my phone."

‎The line went dead.

‎My hands shook.

‎Another call came through.

‎Elara Montclair.

‎My biological mother.

‎I answered sharply. "Mother."

‎"Vivian," she said quickly, misreading my tone. "I know you're upset. I assumed it was the Winter Rite."

‎"I—"

‎"Don't worry," she continued. "I just spoke with Mrs. Ravenscroft. Juliet will represent you."

‎I exhaled shakily.

‎Then her voice lowered.

‎"I have a plan," she said quietly. "This time… you win."

‎Something stirred in my chest.

‎Hope?

‎Fear?

‎"I feel better," I admitted softly.

‎The call ended.

‎I stared at my phone.

‎Then—

‎A message flashed on my screen.

‎From Sebastian.

‎Sebastian:

‎Congratulations on your forthcoming Winter Ascension.

‎I can't wait to witness Vivian Ravenscroft.

‎My heart dropped.

‎The word blurred in front of my eyes.

‎Witness.

‎Not attend.

‎Not stand beside.

‎Witness.

‎My smile faded.

‎The room suddenly felt cold.

‎And for the first time since Mrs. Ravenscroft's reassurance, I understood—

‎The Winter Ascension had already begun.

‎And someone was moving pieces I couldn't see.
