The carriage back to Aster left in the early afternoon.
Shirin had objected, in her particular way of objecting, which looked from the outside like polite commentary. She suggested that returning so soon was unnecessary, that there were still matters worth discussing in Amara. She had looked at Charles when she said it. Charles had thanked her for her concern and continued organizing the departure.
Shirin had suggested they all ride together, but Zaid was firm.
"Shirin, you're the only woman among us. It wouldn't be appropriate," Zaid said firmly, and Charles agreed.
So, she rode with her ladies-in-waiting instead, and spent the entire journey tight-lipped and ill-tempered.
